King City, Ca...Is it a safe place to sleep for a night?

We are taking a trip to San Francisco in October and are looking for a place to stop on our way up and sleep for the night. We plan on doing our sight-seeing during the drive before we get to the hotel and after we leave the next morning, so we don't need anything scenic.
It is only about 2 1/2 hours out of San Francisco so that's a nice plus so we can get up the next morning and get to San Francisco pretty quickly. It's also only about $60 a night, as compared to areas like San Luis Obispo
Does anybody know if King City is a safe place to stay overnight? I haven't read many bad reviews about the areas itself, but then again it's hard to find much about it. It is in the AAA book though. Like I said, we just need a bed to sleep in and a shower, but I definitely do not want to stay in some little creepy town that'll remind me of The Hills Have Eyes. And if not there, any similar suggestions that's not too pricey?

Thanks!

Or San Simeon? Hearst Castle will most likely be our last sight-seeing stop before we go to the hotel for the night. Their prices are pretty good too and while it's further from San Francisco by about two hours (I think), it might be a better option!

These places aren't bad by any means. But yeah it can be tricky to pick a hotel when selection is limited and there are not reputable chains.

Also look at Cambria, and Salinas. I would make you decision more on if you have time after the tour to get over the hills to the 101 or not.

Cambria (which is just a tad south of san simeon) is where my family and I go every year, at least once, usually more. It is beautiful there and the town is so cute. Personally I love Hearst Castle, but the rest of my family doesn't want to repeat any of the tours (we've done them all once). In Cambria, I suggest the Fog Catcher Inn, and in San Simeon, I would suggest the Best Western Cavalier. They have fire pits down on the cliff by the beach, and it is a perfect place to cook hot dogs and marshmallows :thumbsup2

That would be a great way to "unwind". Good suggestion. :thumbsup2

We like San Luis Obispo. You can find several of the major brands. The town is a college town and there are also some good places to eat downtown. Have fun!!

I think King City is a safe place to stay. We stop there often on our way south/north, but have never spent the night. We've never felt unsafe there. If your goal is to be closer to SF, it's a better choice than SLO, which also can be pricey.

I think we'll probably just stay in the area of Hearst Castle. San Simeon or Cambria as someone had mentioned. There are some hotels that aren't too pricey and after a day of sight-seeing around Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Hearst Castle, it will probably be nicer to just go to the hotel instead of driving another hour and half. Plus, it's only about 4 hours from San Francisco, which makes it about a halfway point for us.
:thumbsup2

Thanks everyone!
