Kindle vs Nook

All those bells and whistles sound great... but when I have a spare moment, I like to read. On a screen that doesn't need constant manipulation to combat the effects of the current light source. What you're describing is a large smartphone that doesn't make or receive calls or texts.

Borders has an ereader that will start selling on Sept. 30. You can preorder it now.

The Velocity Cruz Reader will be sold for 199.00. It states it will have internet capability and ability to show videos, and play music as well as being an ereader.

Both the Cruz Reader and Cruz Tablet uses ePUB, TXT, HTML, PDB, and PDF files.
You can also access pdf files, word files and excel files on both.
You can also load pictures on them, JPEGs, GIFs, PNGs, and BMPs are all supported.
Both have a backlit screen.

The Cruz Tablet is an advanced version for more money, a micro cruz tablet which will be 299.00. It has an Android operating system. You can watch videos, play music, play games and email on it.

These two sound like they will be giving the Kendle3 some stiff competition.

It sounds like I might have just convinced myself to get the Cruz Reader.

couldn't see owning any other e-reader. My kindle combined with my iPad, I feel I have all my bases covered. :goodvibes

So....what you really need is a Kindle/Ipad. I have a feeling this is where the market will go, an all in one device.

I would expect that due to Kindle's limited ebook format, people are still going to look to other ereaders. Many people want the option of purchasing and borrowing ebooks from various sources instead of having to only get them from Amazon.

This is an myth that seems to be perpetuated by non-kindle users. There is more than one website I can buy books from, not just amazon. Any website that sells books in the mobi format (my favorite is smashwords) can be used on the kindle.

I don't care if people prefer another eReader over the kindle but I wish they would get their facts strait before trying to talk others out of the kindle.

As long as I can continue read on an E ink, non backlit screen. Right, now my Kindle is for reading only and my iPad for everything else(movies, music, Internet, games and such). I choose my purses now based on being able to fit both devices. :rotfl:

The Cruz looks backlit to me so I have no desire to buy it for an eReader. I don't even use the free Kindle for Android app on my phone because I refuse to read on a backlit screen.

However, the $299 version looks like a more economical choice over buying an iPad.

Me either. Backlit is deal breaker for me.

I love my nook! I take it everywhere. I have about 112 books on it right now, and have paid a total of $1.05. YUP!! One dollar! I get books from the library and please check out the different facebook pages where you can lend books and have them lent to you.

can you link to the FB pages or tell us the names of the ones for LendME.

I ordered Kindle 3 early in the morning on the first day you could pre-order and I received it Thursday afternoon.

<insert moment of major envy here> ;)

I know without even asking that you're having a great weekend!

Wow, I have a kindle and did not know that. Is there an easy list of sites that you can download other books from. I am headed to smashwords now. Trying to decide if I should buy the k3 for DS or give him my K2 and get the new one for me!

What is the difference between the K2 and the K3. I have been trying to decide between the kindle and nook and if I even really need one. Reading threads like this is helpful.

The K3 is smaller, has a better screen, holds twice as many books (3000) and has a longer battery life. It also comes in a graphite color as well as the traditional white.

I'm sure there is more but those are the main differences I have heard others talk about.

I guess this fits here. I wanted the K3, but it wasn't really in our budget. I do some incentive sites, etc., and realized what I culd be converting to Amazon gift cards - it took a little a few weeks, but I made the money and was able to get it into my account to order my K3 on Thursday. I 'm really psyched for it - and better that NO money came out of our checking account or had to be put on a credit card.

And then I went further. I want it protected when I get it so I wanted to order a skin and sleeve for it now. The skin was easy, and only cost me $8 because I was able to use some money in my paypal account, and then my sleeve only cost $8. I didn't like anything I saw online and decided to make my own. I found a pattern for a K2, customized it for the K3 and then went and bought the material. It's great to have a Thomas Kincaid print sleeve. And even though I really don't sew, I think it looks pretty good. I won't be embarrassed taking it out, at least.

So I guess I can say my K3 with skin and sleeve cost me under $17!

I'm looking at all e-readers trying to determine what I want mine to do.....I know I want to be able to download library books.

My question for those of you who already own an e-reader, when it says you can get on the web (like the Nook), what exactly do they mean by that? Can I check my email, etc? Or do they just mean I can get to the Barnes & Noble or Amazon page to look at books?

They are VERY rudimentary browsers which display in black and white and are really only good for emergencies or checking email in a bind. I download library books from 3 different libraries and while it seems great in theory, being #39 on the waiting list of 58 for Eat, Pray, Love or any of the Larsson books gets old fast! Nonetheless, there are plenty of other books out there!

I have Nook and LOVE it BUT... the browser is crappy... really...
I guess if you're stuck somewhere and absolutely need to check something you can do so but it's sloooooow and painful.

Now library books are awesome.
I belong to 2 libraries and currently have 10 loaner books in my nook for our upcoming vacation. I absolutely have to say it is the best electronic purchase I made in the past 5 years. Can you imagine trying to schlep 10 books or more in my suitcase, rolly bag or purse? ... :lmao:

Plus I'm too cheap to keep buying ebooks when I will only read them once.

Good luck with your decision!

I posted on another thread about ereader prices keep falling... a device called Aluratek Libre supposedly will reduce it's price to $99. And it is compatible with epub files. But it's pretty barebones... nothing fancy, no browser, games, etc. It has a great review on amazon. I'm surprised about that. If I haven't gotten hooked by Nook I probably would've tried this one out.
