Kindle Question - backing up your books

I'm new to the Kindle world and have a question or two or three

I can see that I have a list on Amazon of the books that I've downloaded to my Kindle. In the event something goes wrong with my Kindle, is this where I'd go to reload my books? Should I be downloading them somewhere else for back up storage? Will my books on Amazon be there "forever"? What about my free books I've downloaded - if the prices change on them, will I still be able to download the book for free since that is how I orginally purchased it?
