kindle or nook?

The real question is, What do you want to do with this device?

If you JUST want to read books, one of the basic Kindles is your best bet. The screens are better for hours of reading without eye strain, and they're read-able in sunlight -- no glare. They're also more affordable, and the battery'll last weeks between charges. Lots of nice features: The ability to create your own categories, hold your place in the book, dictionary feature, and some books will read outloud.

The Nook is very much like the Kindle in terms of features and price (except that I don't think it has the make-your-own-category feature), but its screen isn't as good -- if eye strain matters, you want to stick with Kindle.

On the other hand, if you want a device that will allow you to read AND ALSO play games, music or movies, the Kindle Fire is a good choice. Its screen does have a glare in full sunlight, making it less attractive for reading by the pool. It also will need to be charged every 1-2 days. Think of it as an ipad light.

The ipad is great, but pricey. It can do everything the Kindle Fire can do -- and more, and better. You can download both the Kindle and Nook aps and get free books from each site. However, for just plain reading, it's heavy. That will make a difference if you read for hours. And its battery life isn't great.

Regardless of which you choose, you can get plenty of free books on either the Kindle or the Nook, but you'll buy plenty too. I buy way more books than I did pre-Kindle. Do not buy any e-reader based upon the idea of borrowing from the library; even if your library offers e-books, this concept is in its infancy, and few libraries have much in the way of lending.

Similarly, don't count on lending books with an ereader. Whether an individual book can or can't be lent is up to the publisher. I suspect this is the type of thing that's going to evolve with the industry.

don't you have to pay for prime membership to get the free kindle books?
No. Prime is a fairly new concept, yet I've been getting free books for about four years now.

Prime lends you one free book each month -- and you have to return it before you can have another. If you want the Prime membership for some other reason (or if you're getting it free because you're having, say, diapers auto-delivered), the free books are an okay deal. But buying Prime JUST for the free books would be a wasteful choice.

Prime also allows you to stream a selection of movies (free) and gets you free shipping on many amazon items. For my family it's worth it.

I can't tell you pros and cons since I don't have both, but I've had a first generation Kindle and I just got a Kindle Fire for Christmas - I read A LOT and I can tell you that unless something drastically changes with Amazon, I will be loyal to the Kindle every time I upgrade.

I love my Kindle Fire. Have had for about a month, and although I bought it for being a reader, I'm extremely happy with the web browsing/email functions that to me are just a bonus. I never considered it as a computer/laptop replacement like I'm sure the Ipad is, but I don't need that. Don't need to work on it, do word processing, spreadsheets, whatever.

For the price it was a no-brainier, at least for me. So much so that I'm more than happy when I run into a glitch, a bug, something that I wouldn't have to put up with on my laptop. I just tell my self, 'hey, it's a reader', and it's not perfect, but it is a lot better than nothing for the convenience of doing a lot of laptop stuff. Know what I mean?

Oh, I got so carried away I almost forgot the Nook question. I did consider the Nook Tablet because, evidently, it has a better screen for reading in bright (sun) light. The price made the difference to me, maybe now it's different considerations with the Nook lowering their price, but I found that the Kindle screen is perfectly fine, beautiful in fact, for 99% of my viewing. Also, something about the larger Nook memory being off-set by hardly any of it being available to anything other than B&N stuff, plus the Fire has cloud.

Just my two cents. I'm sure you'd be happy with either.

:goodvibes

PS

And the Fire has 'Gorilla' glass.
