Kindle or Nook

I got the Nook Color specifically because it was back lit. I read in bed and it's a pain in the rear to deal with night lights, etc. I think. The brightness of the screen as well as the background colors are adjustable and I have zero issues with glare or eye strain. It is nothing like reading on a computer all day.

Kindle for me. I use it to read and play some word games. I love it because I can actually read it anywhere there is light, the screen is amazing. I have the larger version because I like the really large print; it's easy on my eyes. I currently have about 40 books on it and we're headed to the beach next week for two weeks. Can't wait and I'm leaving that big box at home-the one I carried all my books in.

I have the B&W Nook. I like to read in bed and since the screen is not backlit I need to use a book light so I don't disturb DH while he sleeps. They came out with the Nook Color(backlit) about a month after I bought my Nook. If I had known, I would have waited and bought the Nook Color. Because I find a book light very annoying and the backlit screen doesn't bother me or cause eyestrain like it does other people.

So, I would say, if you want to read outdoors or in sufficiently lit rooms, go for the B&W Nook or Kindle. But if you have a spouse and like to read in bed, I would look at the Nook Color.

Has anyone tried the Nook Color outside (say poolside)? My mom's friend has the iPad and said she couldn't read her books outside in the sunlight because of the backlighting. I was wondering if the backlit Nook found away around it (maybe a non-glare screen is all that is required).

I have the original nook, with the backlit touch pad at the bottom, and when I was in direct sunlight I had to shade the pad with my hand to be able to see it.

I have used my Nook Color outside with no issues. Since the screen color and brightness is adjustable you can adjust it to whatever works best for the conditions. They do have a non-glare screen protector and I do have that on my Nook.

Just want to add that my friend brought her Ipad over the other day and it has a touch screen- it was covered with fingerprints, that would drive me NUTS! Just watching her use it I wanted to grab it and wipe it off. :rolleyes1

I have several of the reading devices.
It is possible to read the nook color outside but it causes some eye strain for me - very similar to my iPhone. Right now I can boot it stock nook color from the device and I have CM7 on a micro card to boot it into an Android Tablet. It works as an Android Tablet but it is nowhere near the functionality of an iPAD (which we also have). I'm considering just putting the CM7 on the device because I'm really underwhelmed with the nook firmware and App selection.

Honestly though my youngest son has pretty much stolen my nook color and its hard for me to get my hands on it to do anything - and the battery is always run down when I do find it. I've used it often for audiobooks though and it does well with those.

My go to reading device is the Kindle 3 in the lighted cover. To me it seems to have the best screen and I like the button placement. I also like the collection feature because at this point I have nearly 2000 books so organization is important.

I haven't played around with the newest nook Touch device yet. I'm hoping somebody I know buys one so I can see it.

Just got back from WDW vacation - DD spent every afternoon poolside and says the NookColor was fine - no problems at all with the sun. That said, she does have the non-glare transparency.

As far as the backlighting issue with eyestrain, I know people use that on the "con" side of the list but it's just not a problem. I use my NookColor for hours, after hours on a computer, and have no trouble at all. Obviously, I adjust the brightness but I do that with my computer screen too...

Anyway - the NookColor is fine at the pool. No problems at all in the bright Florida sun.

DH bought me a Nook (older, wi-fi compatible black and white with e-ink). I really like it. If it ever breaks, we'll upgrade to the nook color 3G, but for now this is just right for my needs.

My sister has a Kindle and says she loves it too.

Just to clarify, there is no nook color 3G. Nook color is WiFi only.

The new nook eInk device (Simple Touch Reader) is also WiFi only.

All the vendors are pretty tight lipped on actual sales number but all indications are that the lower cost readers are far outselling 3G models. It remains to be seen whether or not Amazon, Sony and the other vendors will continue to offer 3G in upcoming releases or if they too will pare down to WiFi only.

The Kindle Special Offers is on special offer this week at Best Buy. $114.99 and then you get a $15 Best Buy gift card.

Kindle: Superior quality of internal components and user-interface.

The Nook Color of course because you can turn it into a tablet and use it just like you would an iPad with all of the same features. Can't do that with a Kindle.

DH bought me a B/W Nook for Christmas b/c I'm always borrowing books from the library. Our county has an electronic book library that I can use with my Nook. You can't borrow electronic books from a library with a Kindle. I have yet to buy a book.

I bought DH the color Nook since he takes the train to/from work. I am in the process of downloading the Android 3.0 software to an SD card so he can change it into an Android tablet. Way better/cheaper than any iPad in my opinion.

DD loves my Nook and she also borrows tons of books from the library so we told her if she gets honor roll every semester, we'll buy her the new Nook at the end of the school year. One honor roll left to go!!

Just so the OP knows, Kindle will have Library capability before the end of the year. Amazon and overdrive are working together and it sounds like it will be even easier to check out books since they are talking about the books being able to load onto the kindle by wireless, rather than having to side load like the rest of the ereaders.

Yes, the Kindle is supposed to be adding library borrowing shortly. As it stands now, the nook can borrow but the kindle cannot, which was part of why DH bought the nook.

I bought the original nook when it came out because of the format it uses for documents - at the time, the Kindle did not support ePub and most libraries use ePub for eBooks. Also, it had an end-user replaceable battery and an SD card slot for expansion. I now have the nook color, which I use as both a reader and an Android tablet (I dual-boot it between the stock setup, and Android running off the SD card). I gave my original nook to my wife and she is loving it.

I had wanted a kindle for ages, but DH bought me a Nook B&W for Christmas, and I really love it. I'm sure I'd love a Kindle too. I've read lots of free books, and lots of downloads from the library, and bought a few as well. It is always in my purse so I am never without reading material.

I have. I bought an anti glare screen protector and adjust the brightness and it works fine.
