I just checked out a Kindle book from my favorite online library and it was delivered wirelessly to my Kindle. No need to download it to my pc then sideload it.

All the features you have on regular Kindle books are available on library books, as well.

Yay! :cool1:

Any more info on this? I have read that the kindle now has this feature at some libraries. How do I tell if ours does? And is it a different format than epub?

thanks, My Sony ereader just brooke so I am starting to think about getting a new one to replace it.

Jenn.

They are rolling out the Kindle function today. If you are in the US and your library has Overdrive ebooks, then it will get Kindle functionality. Libraries have being going "live" all day long.

The format is the Kindle format. You choose the book on the Overdrive website and then you are directed to Amazon.com. From there you choose "send Library book to my Kindle" and you receive a book DRM'd for your Kindle device in the Kindle format.

It will only send wirelessly via a WiFi connection. If you only have a 3G Kindle (Kindle 1 or 2) or you aren't in a WiFi area you will need to download to the computer and sideload.

Afterwards, the book shows in the Manage My Kindle section on Amazon.com for the length of the loan. Any notes etc you make while you have to book will remain after the loan expires. If you finish the book before the loan expires, you can return it early.

I think most libraries use a program called Overdrive. You can go to the Overdrive website and search by zip code. Unfortunately my small rural county doesn't have it. I hope it will some day soon.

My library network has Kindle books. I guess I need to download and install software to my computer as I don't have wifi. Very exciting and one of the reasons I bought my Kindle!

My library's e-book checkout system allowed me to check out Kindle books for 10, 14, 21 or 30 day periods. I had 6 books sent to my Kindle for 30 days. Nice that I don't have to finish them in 14.

I also noticed the Kindle ebooks come out of the same pool as the epubs. If one format was on hold, the other showed as on hold, as well. Same for books being available.

Time to catch up on my reading while traveling to/from WDW! Yay!

This is fun, isn't it?? I don't mind buying my Kindle books and I certainly will continue to do that for anything I want to read when published (bestsellers, etc.) but it will also be nice to browse what's available and just choose something I might not have come across on the Amazon website.

I downloaded two books yesterday - a memoir by Joan Didion and a new fiction title called Galore I'd seen several times but hadn't bought. This will be a nice option.

I downloaded and installed the software and set up my account; my library uses Overdrive. I requested one book and see that I am 3 of 3 waiting for it.

I had been considering a Kindle for months and the news that Libraries would be lending Kindle books by the end of the year made the decision to get one SO easy.

Ok, help!

I have been checking since yesterday, and I "think" that my library hasn't gone live yet.

When I find a book, it doesn't list a seperate Kindle format...just the ePub and PDF to choose from. So I am guessing that my library hasn't gone live yet or it would list Kindle format to choose to finish the lend?

I have a nook color and not a kindle but I can tell you my library has overdrive, and right on the front page it shows the kindle and says now available, and there is a kindle format to click on when lending a book.

ETA: Also, make sure to refresh your library page, if you do not clear out your cache, it may load up an old page without a refresh. Just in case!

Ok, I tried deleting history and refreshing and still nothing. I checked the advance search and Kindle isn't an option there either. There is a small add on the bottom saying that Kindle Lending is coming soon. I will keep checking back today, hopefully we go live soon!

I love the fact that you can download the library books wirelessly. I loathe Adobe to sideload books- it's terrible software with awful support.

I already downloaded a Kindle library book- so easy!

I downloaded the first two books in a coffeehouse mystery series and a couple of Kathy Reichs books and two Tess Gerritsen books. Can't wait!

My library's main web page says it's offering it, but when I look at titles nothing is available, I have to put it on a wait or wish list. Maybe I'll try again in a week, if it's just rolling out there could be some bugs.

I have used overdrive in non-kindle formats and can say that it is probably not a bug. Every single electronic book for my library has a waiting list. I will say that they move faster than you expect. Put yourself of a bunch of lists and in a week or so you will start coming off the lists. You have 3 days to acknowledge and accept your copy or they move to the next person. I let some go because I was already reading something else. I suspect this happens to others and that is why the list moves fast.

I just downloaded my first book from my public library. It was so easy and can't beat the price :cool1:

I LOVE my Kindle. Amazon offers them for $114 now with wifi or $139 with 3G and wifi. I can carry hundreds of books with me in my purse whenever I'm stuck waiting somewhere! Obviously the library books are free, and there are also lots of classics and other special offers for free books. Typically books tend to be somewhat cheaper on the Kindle but not substantially.

Please ask any questions that you have.

If you use the Advanced Search function you can specify format and stipulate that you only want to see titles that are currently available; that will only show you things that you can check out immediately.

Oh neat! I've been researching trying to decide what I would like to put on my Christmas list.. but I just checked our library and they have Overdrive too! :)
