kindle e-ink or paperwhite?

I already have the ipad, so I don't want the HD. I want to be able to read outside, especially at the beach. It will be used only for reading since I have an ipad already for email, web surfing, etc.

The e-ink is significantly cheaper. Is there any reason to get the paperwhite?

There are some newly released software features only available on the latest version of the Paperwhite (gen 2). I really love my Paperwhite. It's my first Kindle, but my husband and kids have had all the previous models between them and I find the screen on the PW easiest to read and I like the touchscreen a lot. I'm not sure what the e-ink one is, all the ones we have had were more defined by how you operated them (keyboard, touch, etc.) from what I recall.

Usually on amazon, you can get a page with a table comparing all the different models they are selling showing what is different about them.

All the non tablet (non hd) kindles use e-ink technology. The paperwhite is backlit to allow reading at night or in low light without a separate light. The earlier kindles (keyboard, touch) we're not backlit. Hope this helps.

The Paperwhite is e-ink also. The difference is that the Paperwhite also has a light so you can read in low light or the dark. It is not backlit like the iPad so you still have the benefit of the e-ink. I also have an iPad but I love the Paperwhite for reading.

The light on the Paperwhite comes from the sides somehow. It is not backlit like the iPad. That is why you can still read it in sunlight unlike the iPad which is backlit.

Oh yeah, forgot about the light. For our older ones, we always bought the cases with the light built in.

I would say the reason to go with a paperwhite over just the plain kindle is if you want to read INSIDE in the dark.

I love that I can read in my bed at night with the lights off - that was well worth the paperwhite price to me. It's been awhile since I used mine outside (since this is the neverending winter) but I do know that I adjust the brightness regularly so that there is never any eye strain (I am very sensitive to light).

The regular would probably be fine for your purposes, but the paperwhite is better overwall, I think.

I have a Nook Color but much prefer the Kindle paper white. It is a lot easier to hold and easier on the eyes. I love that I can read it outside!

I think the OP might be asking whether or not to buy the $69 basic model Kindle or the Paperwhite. But yes, they are both eInk.

Get the Paperwhite.

Thanks for all the replies. If the main difference is the light, I will probably get the regulary e-ink, not the paperwhite.

If I am reading inside my house, I can use my ipad. I want something more portable for when I am on the go. I also want something that works well outside. I don't think I will use the light on the paperwhite very often.

Thanks again.

Just FYI - it's more than just an on/off light. You can adjust the light in relation to the light you're reading in. I do know that I've turned it up when I'm outside reading to increase the contrast.

Either one won't have the glare of the ipad.

I don't know what the price difference is but the backlight on the PaperWhite is really worth it.

I've had both, and am blown away by how much more I love the paper white... The light is amazing and so much easier on your eyes then a clip on light or something...and you can go from a dark room to a bright room without adjusting it
