Have been invited to a kindergarten graduation for a 5 year old boy. I've never been around boys (DH is the only exception ;) ) and have *no idea* how to begin searching for a gift. His parents made it clear years back that they frown on cash as gifts. Could someone here with young boys please help me? :confused3

How about a card? Its kindergarten, for crying out loud. Its JMHO, but its like inventing an excuse to buy kids stuff. Seriously, though. I wouldn't get a gift for moving from k to 1st grade.

How about a Level 1 reader? Books are always great gifts! My daughter is in love with the Junie B Jones series. They have other series out there that are geared more to boys! :)

McDonalds or Chuck E Cheese gift card?

I agree - a book is a great choice.

Our DS is graduating kindy next week and I picked up a few books for him.

I noticed that Books-a-Million (and probably other bookstores) had a nice selection of motivational/graduation-y type books that would make a nice gift, especially with a personalized inscription/note written in the inside cover!

I'm a big fan of books with personal notes inside as gifts for just about any occasion, though, so I may be a bit biased. :)

For my son's K graduation we got him his own library card - best part - it was FREE and we gave him the gift of reading and teaching him responsibility at the same time.

I don't think you'd be able to apply for a library card for another person's child, but books are definitely a good and appropriate gift for a 5 yo.

Good Luck!

Like many others said, a book would be a great choice. A similar idea would be to get a "jump start" to first grade book, along with a 64 box of new crayons.

I agree with books, but if you didn't want to do that you could get him a new backpack for 1st grade with some crayons and pencils or something in it.

I love the Step-into-Reading books for that age. My kids have enjoyed "Too Many Dogs" by Lori Haskins, "Hot Dog" by Molly Coxe, "I Like Bugs" by Margaret Wise Brown, and "Bubble Trouble" by Stephen Krensky.

Books are great, I agree. A movie pass to Speed Racer would probably be a great one too. Or a day out with you to see the movie. DS is dying to see it as are most boys we are around. It is, after all, kindergarten graduation, so fun seems to be in order!

I used to teach preschool and last year for graduation, I gave my kids plastic sand pails filled with fun stuff for summer.... sidewalk chalk, a beach ball, bubbles, jumprope, a book etc. I think I got the pails and almost everything inside at Michaels and the Dollar Tree. I wrapped them in clear plastic cellophane and tied wth ribbon and a plastic shovel. They were a hit!
You could out almost anything in depending on hoe much you wanted to spend. I think mine came to around $7 each

Magic Tree House books are very popular among that age group. My 1st grader is really beyond that reading level but he still loves them. 1 or 2 of those would make a really nice gift.

How about a small bucket filled with the fixings for an ice cream sundae? You could put in a bottle of hot fudge, a box of ice cream cones, cherries and sprinkles and tie it up in cellophane. Cheap, no clutter and best of all fun for the child!

I give the Dr. Seuss book "Oh the Places You Will Go" to all graduates... young and old! It was the theme for the valedictorian speech when I graduated from high school, and now it is tradition to give copies of the book as graduation gifts.

How about a pad of the paper that has lines at the bottom and a blank space to draw a picture at the top. Along with that you could give him a neat pencil, crayons or colored pencils, and some stickers.

Webkinz or popular with that age too.

I'm overwhelmed with all the great suggestions!!!! All you folks would be fun to go shopping with! :thumbsup2 Many, many thanks to all of you.

I'll echo the others. Our kids Love books.
And Webkinz are very popular as well.
I don't know what's in your area but a pass or giftcard to something fun to do might be nice as well.
We have an indoor play park here that costs 8 dollars for the afternoon (adult free) as well as a Childrens museum that I believe is 5 dollars for the afternoon.

Books are great! We just went to a birthday party for a kindergarten boy and I got him a box set of Flat Stanley books and a Knock Knock Joke book. My kindergarten DD LOVES knock knock jokes, but she only knows 2 of them and I'm a little sick of hearing the same jokes.:rotfl2: I figure other moms are probably in the same boat!;)

I'm with the "no gift" minority. It's kindergarten! Heck, we won't be buying our 8th grader a "graduation" gift... I think it's a bad precedent to set, giving gifts as kids go from grade to grade in school!

Now they have preschool, kindergarten, 6th grade, 8the grade commencement!

Can't say that I disagree with the two of you here that feel gifts for a kindergarten graduation aren't necessary. I never received gifts until H.S. graduation and neither did DH. But....this is a very close family member and we received an invitation via mail for this event. (Very same kind H.S. seniors mail out.) We are traveling 700 miles to visit these family members and the graduation happens to be during this time. The parents are also planning a party at a local restaurant following the graduation ceremony.

The boy's parents go way out of their way to be outstanding hosts to us when we visit. I feel under these circumstances their little boy should be honored by DH and I with a small gift.

Again, thank you all for the great suggestions. :thumbsup2 :flower3:
