I have been a fan of Kinder Joy Eggs for quite a while and I noticed that they are now popular even more than Hershey bars and I think that they taste great and I never knew why these candies have become so popular because they release them during holidays such as Valentine's Day and Christmas and Halloween and Easter with themed toy surprises. But here's something that I discovered about Kinder Joy Eggs and that is there is many companies trying to copy them. Like at CVS Mom found candy eggs that are exactly the same thing as Kinder Joy Eggs but they are made by a different company and I hope Kinder doesn't sue them for copying their eggs and not only that they come with a little toy as well
How did Kinder Joy Eggs become a popular candy today?

Isn't that the candy shaped like an egg with some small toy inside? Always thought it was a bad idea to market tiny toys to children who might try to put them in their mouth. I occasionally see them in the checkout line at the grocery store. Usually the attraction is the small toy and the chocolate is likely not very good. No idea if they are popular or not.

The toy in a plastic egg.

I don’t know when and where they came around but DS8 and DD5 LOVE them. They are usually the top choice for candy when they get to pick something. They love the chocolate candy part. They put the toy together and it just forgotten about a few minutes later.

I had the originals (Kinder Surprise) back in Germany and Canada, and the current kind (Kinder Joy) sold in the US. The old ones were a chocolate shell housing a plastic egg with the toy pieces, The new ones (probably changed for the US regulations), are plastic which splits into two chambers, one for the chocolate, the other for the toy bits.

The chocolate of the new ones kind of reminds me of Ferrero Rocher. The original Kinder Egg chocolate you can still taste if you buy one of the Kinder Riegel chocolate sticks. Same white/dark colors too.

I’ve seen some other brand my niece had, it’s a wannabe Kinder egg sold for years which always has animals in it.

See attached: I can taste this chocolate just by looking at it! So different than any chocolate brand in the Us.

My almost 3 yo DD is obsessed with Kinder Joy. Actually, she’s obsessed with anything egg shaped. It blew her mind when we finally opened one and she discovered there was something inside. I wouldn’t call the popular in general around here though.

we have both versions in Canada, Kinder Eggs (with the toy inside) and Kinder Joy (much less popular and very rare to find) which only came here a few years ago. I thought Kinder eggs were illegal in the US because you can't put a toy inside something edible?

I think Kinder Eggs copied the old Disney Magic/Wonder Balls that were made by Nestle's in the 90's but were recalled due to children swallowing the toys inside the balls and Kinder Eggs got the inspiration from them to create the Kinder Joy Eggs but the toys inside are really cute and they just released some with plush animals too. And I believe the eggs Mysterian mentioned are the ones made by a brand called Cosby and they ARE the exact same thing as Kinder Joy Eggs and they come with toys for boys or girls that are animals

Yes, which is why only the Kinder Joy eggs are sold there (that version/style meets the rules).

My guess is it’s the cheap toy and not the cheap chocolate that is the draw for kids. They are not popular by me.

The toys are inside plastic for the Joy, not something edible. Which is why they are the only kind you can get in the US

I saw some markdown after Halloween for a quarter each. Snapped up a bunch for Christmas stockings. After the grandkids opened them, I was shocked that these things normally cost about $2 each. I'd rather buy a match box car or can of play doh and a candy bar for the same cost.

Kinder Eggs have been around since the 70's made by Ferrero

The kids like the Surprise better than the Joy. Toys are better too ...so they say. 😁

But "unboxing" is all the thing nowadays.😬

Kinder eggs the original ones with the toy inside is a major contra brand that many Germans smuggle into the US to gift to friends and family. Lol. How many of us have gone through customs/ immigration freaked out that they would get caught and have their kinder eggs taken away. The makers figured out. America’s also like these, and
had to come up with the kinder joy so they can market in the US. In the US you can’t market and sell something edible along with something non-edible encased.
for what it’s worth, I grew up with kinder eggs and here in Germany. I have yet to hear of anyone who accidentally swallowed or choked on the toy inside. Since when you open the egg, it’s pretty obvious there’s something in the side.

Kinder Surprise had the toy inside a chocolate shell. Kinder Joy has two sides with the toy inside a compartment and a chocolate paste. The w Rory with the shell is that someone might attempt to just eat the shell whole without understanding there’s a toy inside.

That being said, I’m wondering how Louisiana king cakes are legal.

I believe the law was specific to candy with non-food items inside.

I think the last time we had a king cake at work (it was from Slidell, LA), the plastic baby came in a little bag, outside of the cake. It was larger than the plastic babies I remember in the 90's.
Of course this may vary on the bakery.
