I'm really sad right now......DH and I looked into a 3 or 5 day trip to Disneyland in August and while the 3 for 5 park hopper pass was a fantastic deal, DH feels that it's a better use for our "Disney money" to be put aside for a down payment on a home in the upcoming years.

This will be the first year in about 5 years that we have not gone to Disneyland together as a couple and I'm devastated.:sad1::sad1:

DH says that if it means that much to me, then we should just book it and go.....and the irrational side of me wants to do just that. But the logical side of me agrees with DH that we should just save the money.

I also don't want to spend over 1K on a trip just to have DH resent the fact that I spent it on Disney.....and think the entire trip "Oh this meal could have bought us a front porch" etc......:sad2:

I'm also worried because if we don't go this year, will we go next year? Will we have kids by then or want to save that money to and not be able to go for another 5 or more years? Just so many unknown factors......

Sorry I just needed to vent......:guilty:

I hear you. We can't make it this year either. Hours cut at work and a job loss.:sad1:
Owning a home has it's rewards though.:thumbsup2

well you have gone many times, and this is just one year...... or maybe more but at least you have gotten to enjoy it many times. I waited 45 years to go, and have gone now 5 times. I will not be going any more after this upcoming trip because my parents are just not going to be able to care for them selves soon. Im also raising grand kids and Being elderly my self Im tired. I have taken my grand kids, and this is the last who rah before its all over. Now thats sad !
Dad has early stages of Alzheimers, moms just not able to get around much any more, and the grand kids ,well they keep me busy and very tired indeed.
Disney is awesome, but life takes front seat. the economy is bad, people who have had much money are now living in tents ! The cost of food is on the rise, housing, OMG this is the time to save, to deal with real life then when there is extra think about " disney" you can always save up like we do, putting extra change in a huge jar ( use a water jug) throw in what you have in your pockets and what you would spent on coffee and other things you do not need. in one year you can have enough saved for a trip :) C hin up girl, not all is lost. life first, then the other fun things will come (((((((hugs ))))))

I do not own a home, I had before when I was married but I left him the house, and the huge payments and never looked back. I rent from a wonderful owner who cares of everything, and anything that needs to be fixed. I pay way less rent then I would ever pay in house payments and insurance. why? because I decided a long time ago it was better to not have to pay the high costs , in case I lost a job, or worse and lost my home. we have lived in a wonderful home for now 5 years and it was the best decision for us. We saved hundreds of dollars a month in housing costs not owning a home and there for got a new car with those savings and just payed it off this year.
Not everyone thinks as I do, but for us it was a wise decision.

Making a responsible decision to buy a home is probably one of the best things you can do, I do not mean buying an overpriced, sm sq ft home just to buy a home. Disney will always be there in one form or another. The economy sucks in different parts of the country, other parts it does not. When you rent all you are doing is putting the money in someones elses pocket and you have no federal interest deduction. Many people use their fed returns to go to Disneyland! Do what your heart thinks is right.

Jack

PS, I wish I could go to Disneyland on 1K!

Hang in there and start saving now for next year. I also found out a few days ago that DW is getting an 8% pay cut and we have canceled our trip for Oct. 2009. It was a big let down but at least I have our Aug. 2009 trip to look forward to. Set yourself a goal for 2010 and you can make it happen.:goodvibes

I think you should do it....you can do it ...every post makes a great point especially blackjackdelta. This is coming from the risk taker in me, you sound like me I have to go every year and we go at least 2-3times a year, it does help that we live in California so we can just pick up and drive not having to worry about flying...but if you keep waiting you possibly could spend more in the long run...why not try staying at one of the hotels on harbor blvd... you will save a ton just doing it that way ...there are so many tips on this board that can really save you money without going over a budget they have helped me and a ton of others on here....I look at it this way life is too short, live it to its fullest.

I live in a federal home, all my rent money goes into an account and mine when I move out ;)

and my trip only cost us 1,655 this year !! 1 week , 3 people.... flights, fairfield inn, park tickets and 3 goofys kitchen meals :) I think I did well !!

Definitely prioritize things like home and job first. DL will always be there, but opening the possibility of debt is never a good thing. Save up and you can find lots of ways to make it a cheap trip.

I've never regretting owning our home. We bought our first home 11 years ago and our mortgage should be gone in 10 years. After that we won't have anymore payments:) I love the freedom that comes with it and not having to deal with landlords. A week at Disneyland is nice, but having your own place the rest of the year is wonderful.

I regretted owning a home. Dh is not handy so we could not do repairs. It cost every stinking penny we had. Then Dh's job went on strike. We ended up in chapter 13 bankruptcy for 4 years.

We celebrated when we sold! getting out just a year before the big housing crisis. While rents were really low!!

Yes I love being a renter!! And having repairs made by real handymen.

I have watched "House Hunters" for 4 years and Mortgage are $2300.00 on some loans.

Nope I'll stick to paying 1/3 of that thanks!!

just my thoughts exactly !! I deal with a landlord...... by him fixing everything on time and Im always thrilled it costs me nothing! I could not imagine paying a huge bank payment each month on a home, not to say that if I was married and had a hubby who made awesome money that would not be ok, but for me now, it was not what I wanted to do.

And to the OP, not everyone can afford to go to Disneyland every year, some can not afford it but every several years. I think when a person can go more and live in another state there very lucky. I see people on message boards who can not afford to go to Disneyland and the live in California ! I love 4 states away, and the air fare from the small towns kill ya on the cost. even flying out from another air port costs a lot since you have to park your car, and pay. Some folks just can not go on vacation every year. Growing up we never went on vacation, we could not afford to feed 6 kids let alone take us all and hit the road to Disneyland. mom and dad both worked and we barely scraped by. Heck I did not know there really was such a thing as Disneyland or dream about it.
I was 45 when I first saved up enough to go there, and have done so ever since. but man the cost. This year was the cheapest I have ever gotten on a trip. usually it costs over 400.00 plus tax for plane fare for each person, then there is the motels, the park tickets, the food. usually for 4 of us it $3,000. not much by some folks standards, but to a gramma raising kids, and the lone worker in the house thats a whole lot of mulla !:lmao:

I have never heard of a "Federal Home", have to look that up. Until the last 18 month's I have worked out of the country for at least 6 months of the year since 1970. In the 6 month's I was home I would buy a dump, fix it up and sell it...flipping when most folks did not have a clue. It does not take any talent, it just takes wanting to learn. I have 4 kids under 22 and 3 are in college($$$$$), traveling with 6 people is very expensive so we never took vacations when they were real small, now it is a differenr story.
They do not want to do WDW, they have no interest. All they want to do is go to Disneyland once a year as soon as summer school os over. Owning a home is a commitment to the home, just not a place to sack out, if you are not committed to working on the upkeep when you have the time away from the job, the renting is the best way to go. Where I live, the rentals are above the 98% occupancy level and the economy crunch really has not made a impact on the community.
I wish all the best in what ever anyone wishes to do. Home vs Vacation?

I hear you Jack, your a good man and a hard worker, but for me being a single old lady taking care of a home was not an option, I can barely hang curtains now. federal is housing unit, or units where I live, they have apartments and homes, I was blessed to get a home as I took in 3 kids many years ago and was given a 2 story 4 bedroom home, 2 car garage, a large yard. ( for less then most pay for grocery's a month.) not everyone is as blessed as I am to get such a great deal . I know this and Im truly grateful. Im also living in a small town so the crunch hit hard for us here. I can not flip a house....... But I can flip a hip :lmao::lmao::lmao:

UHHHH WHAT?! I must be failing miserably!

I hope & pray this won't be my DH & my last trip. I'm currently a contract employee with the government and my contract ends Sept. 30th. I'll have to pound the pavement again (not looking forward). I hope I can find another job so I can take another vacation (hopefully to DL).:sad1:

I understand what you are saying. I was not trying to compare since our situations, etc are very different. I was in my own way trying to give the OP and idea, that if they can, working hard for something can be rewarding and that we all make sacrifices(or most of us do) to get what we want out of life. If the OP's home is that important than the decision is a no brainer. I would love to go to Disney once a month but we have other responsibilities besides that I probably would not have my main job that I have now. Hopefully we will get there in August.

Jack

I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, we probably won't be able to go this yr either. We missed last yr too due to unforeseen circumstances, which caused us to cancel the trip. I'm going to start saving now, and hopefully we can go Jan/Feb of next yr. It is a good $4k for our Disney vacations, which is a lot of money for us.
