My boyfriend and I have talked about this lately, but haven't really come up with an answer and are pretty torn. I was curious about what you guys think.

Are you going to tell your kids Santa is real?

We're really not sure if we're going to or not. On the one hand, I think it adds a certain magical element to Christmas which can be really special. On the other, it is a lie, and some kids are devastated when they find out the truth. We really don't know which way to go.

Even my 11 year old still believes!? At least he hasn't given up that he doesn't, I guess it's me who will be crushed when he doesn't. I think there is some magic in having at least some sense that he is real. I think something is lost, especially when it comes to gifts. A wish list is a WISH list when its to Santa. When its to mom and dad its about what they can "afford" to get. Not so magical!!

I definately wouldn't have done it any other way!

I'm glad my parents never tried to make me believe in Santa, and I still have many fond and magical Christmas memories.

I think for them it was a combo of wanting to emphasize the religious meaning behind Christmas, and also my mom having had a particularly traumatic revelation that Santa wasn't real ;)

i never beleived in santa, my mother always said i was too quick...she said that by the time i was 3 yrs old i was remembering where she bought the wrapping paper for my presents, where she bought my sister's presents etc...so i don't think i was ever fooled. i will tell my kids the st. nicolaus story and let them imagine! santa exemplifies the spirit of giving and i think that value is important to instill in our children!

You mean he's not real!?!?! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

I allowed my daughter to believe in Santa and played it up. But it was also tied in with Saint Nicholas. So even when she started questioning him, I told her that Saint Nicholas was indeed a real person and a wonderful man that became a Saint and that his spirit lives on in Christmas. None of which are lies. I let her correlate Santa Claus with St. Nick. Eventually she asked flat out for clarification and I told her. I wouldn't change it for the world !

My parents sort of led me to believe that Santa was real -- they never said anything one way or the other. Santa came to our house on Christmas Eve, I got my pic w/ Santa, etc. But - when I bluntly asked my mom if Santa was real, she told me the truth (our neighbor's kid told me and I thought he was lying so I asked my mom). I think we'll do the same thing w/ our kids -- Santa will be there when they are young, but when they ask, we'll tell them the truth.
