Hi-

I checked this board quite a bit while preparing for my Jan. trip to WDW w/ my mother, and found it to be a terrific source of info. I'm hoping you can help me again.

My mom is able to walk (ex., she can handle the small grocery store and quick errands into the cleaner, the bank, etc.), but would have never been able to experience WDW without the scooter we rented. She has been hesitant to travel ever since she developed her knee problems, and WDW and the scooter have her hopeful to travel again.

I was hoping someone could direct me to a website or even other travel destinations that would address her concerns. That is, not only scooter-friendly, but able to provide the scooter as well!

Thank you in advance... Nicole

I'm glad that you found the board helpful and that you and your mom had a successful trip to WDW.:)
I don't know of any other especially good places to visit, but hopefully some others do. I'll try to see if I can find anything for you.
Since your mom enjoyed the scooter, perhaps she's ready to look into gettting one for herself. Some of our posters have had really good advice about what it takes to get one.

Nivole,

just an idea.

Decide where you might want to go.

Find a medical hire company in that town.

Ask them which localattractions/theme parks/historic sites they deliver to.

Most public buildings and major attractions ought to be ADA compliant

I have a book 'Great American Vacations for Travellers with Disabilities' , which had some useful contact numbers. You might be able to find a copy in a bookstore.

Andrew-

Thank you so much for the great suggestion. I have found the book online and already ordered it!

That book sounds great!

I wasn't able to do a web search until today. Here are some of the things I found:
This one is about wheelchair accessible homes, but has some links about travel: http://www.waccess.org/

These are travel agencies that specialize in wheelchair accessible travel that both have some other tips: Wheelchair Travel
Accessible Journeys
Access Tours with tours to national parks and other areas of the Western US.

If you want to visit Atlanta, here's a great resource:
Shepherd Center Guide to Atlanta

A magazine called Paraplegia News has a column about travel. You can search their database and look at older issues on the web.
Here's another magazine/newsletter called Emerging Horizons that has travel info.
Here's a neat sounding
resort in Ontario, Canada .
I think I made too many links, because it won't let me post any more. But with the book that Andrew listed and what I found, you should be able to go somewhere.
