When I first heard that Disney/Buena Vista Entertainment got the rights to release Kiki's Delivery Service in English in America for the first time on video in 1998 my father and I were so excited because my dad loves Japanese animated cartoons and we were hyped to see what this movie would be like. And to my surprise Disney did a wonderful job dubbing Kiki's Delivery Service in English and I think Disney did the right thing by releasing this movie in America for the very first time. And I was amazed at the amazing celebrity voice talent and by casting Kirsten Dunst as Kiki's voice was smart and Phil Hartman was so funny voicing Kiki's cat and the amazing talent of Debbie Reynolds shines in this movie. And the two songs used in Kiki's Delivery Service are wonderful and the music score is just stunning as well. I wonder why Disney+ doesn't have this movie and they should add Kiki's Delivery Service because it's a real gem of a movie

Because they no longer have any contract with Studio Ghibli. And Studio Ghibli may not have been happy with how Disney treated their films as ‘second class’ in relation to their own Disney movies. The way Disney treated Spirited Away was awful. It released in Japanese theaters in July 2001, it didn’t show up in US theaters until September 2002, only after it won a Golden Bear at the Berlin Film festival. But even then there was little to no marketing for the film. This came years after Ghibli had to fight Harvey Weinstein not to cut Princess Mononoke (Disney’s subsidiary Miramax was to release it).

Gkids distributes Studio Ghibli films in the US now and it seems that Ghibli is happier with them because they hold a Studio Ghibli Fest each year where the films return to theaters. Studio Ghibli feels their films should be experienced in theaters.

As for streaming Warner Bros has a multi year deal with Studio Ghibli. You can stream all the movies there. The Boy and the Heron will be on Max on September 6.

I discovered a few months ago that Max had a bunch of Miyazaki movies, so I've watched (or rewatched) a few of them, including "Kiki" (which is delightful).

Max also has a lot of Kurosawa films that were previously only available on the Criterion Channel.

I think with Kiki's Delivery Service finally being shown in English in America on video for the first time Disney/Buena Vista Entertainment was gonna start releasing the Miyazaki movies in English in America for their first time and the second film that followed Kiki's Delivery Service was Castle In The Sky's English American debut on video and seeing how this worked made Disney a lot of money. I fell in love with Kiki's Delivery Service because it's simply a marvel of a movie and the way they dubbed it into English is flawless and Kiki herself is an independent role model for girls. My dad was also impressed with this film and you can see why people have raved about it a lot. The songs Soaring and I'm Gonna Fly performed by Sydney Forrest are lovely but they should've made English versions of the original Japanese version of Kiki's Delivery Service and that would've been nice

The Boy and the Heron another classic, and can’t wait to see it again ! Was so beautiful on the big screen ! I’m as much of a Disney fanatic as the next person, but Disney was rereleasing the Studio Ghibli films because they can’t touch them as far as animation, characters, and storyline. They are brilliant !
