Hello. My dd12 has a tube ion her right ear to remove ear pressure. She never got earaches except for twice. Her issure has been pressure in her right ear. She's had surgery twice to put tubes in.

She needs ortho braces and forgot to ask Ear Dr. if getting braces will affect her ear when she gets braces on or tightened. Just curious.

Does anyone have kids with tubes in ther ear and braces? If so do they ever experience any troubles?? I know when dd goes to the dentist the form ask if there any ear problems:confused3 Thanks inadvance

SORRY I MEANT TO PUT THIS ON THE COMMUNITY BOARD. How do I get it moved???

My son (now 25) had several sets of tubes and his adenoids removed. He had a palate expander put in at age 8 and braces at age 12. He had no problems with his ear tubes and orthodontics.

I'm trying to figure out how they would interact and can't come up with anything.

Not trying to high jack your post but....That is a great question. My little man age 4 now had tubes put in at age 2. The tubes fell out a few weeks ago and Dr. not putting more in till we see if he gets more ear infections. I would love to know the answer to this question for the future and if anyone has had problems with flying. We are flying to Disney in Dec.

On the flying thing. Try giving him gum to chew. sometimes this helps. The chewing and swallowing helps with ear pressure.

I bought some ear planes for dd. They have kids size. Its a special ear plug to release pressure up in the sky and when they close the doors on the plane. At the time her first ear tube fell out so i used the ear planes plugs. We had no issues. Better safe then sorry. I wanted to make sure she was comfortable so I worry and ask ?'s-lol!

Ear tub and braces i ask because dental forms ask if theres any ear issues. I grind and bite down on my teeth in my sleep and sometimes my teeth, jaw and ear will hurt from biting down so hard.

My DD (7) had her first orthodontist appointment today. She is going to need a palate expander for her upper jaw. Was it bad? She is very nervous about it... :(
(sorry for the thread hijack, OP!)

I had one of these before I got my braces on. Yes, it really hurts! The worst part is that food gets stuck between the expander and the roof of your mouth, though...so gross.

i had tubes in my ears as a young child and flying was terribly painfull for me...

no problem. I hope she has no problems or discomfort with the expander.

Flying was terrrible even with tubes in your ear? I thought tubes helped with pressure? Either way good to know even if dd has the tube i will be sure to use ear planes . We dont fly much so i guess thats good-lol!

I had one when I was in 6th grade. It wasn't bad at all. It got so easy for me that instead of my parent turning it once in the morning and once at night, I could handle 2 turns in the morning and getting it over with all at once. Yes, I needed a water pick to get the food out from under it but it was minor. And now, as an adult, I realize how worth it it all was.

My kids never had ear tubes, but my son suffered from terrible allergies and constant sinus infections. He got a palate expander when he was in 3rd grade. He didn't have too much trouble with pain, just a little adjustment time with talking, and he had trouble figuring out how to swallow for an hour or two! BUT, the huge advantage for him was, that when his palate was expanded, his sinuses were, too. He has had far fewer sinus infections since having his palate expanded. I don't know if or how that would affect the ears, but it may help. If there's less nasal and sinus congestion, the ears may get better, too. Good luck!

I can't see where tubes would be an issue with an ortho appliance. Dentists will ask about ear problems due to TMJ (grinding/clenching issues).
DD had terrible ear problems on flights, we got her Earplanes and gave her Sudafed (pediatrician recommended this) an hour before a flight and gave her some gum to chew and the problem was gone.

Just make sure to keep the Tylenol/Advil on a good schedule. She'll be uncomfortable. Good luck! :)

Ugh, not good. :( Poor kid; she's already VERY nervous about it (and I haven't even told her yet that she needs the expander) and absolutely can not stand anything that causes her pain. Can it be taken in and out, or is it fixed? I'm kind of hoping it is fixed, because I don't want her to be able to take it out on her own...

OP, my son (now 5) had 3 sets of ear tubes and also his adneoids removed. He's flown a dozen times with no problems... good luck with your DD!

Palate expander is cemented to bands on their back teeth. Braces and headgear can also be hooked into the same bands if needed. (Well I'm sure they are a little different if they need the extra hooks on them, but all one if they are needed.)

DS was 9 when he got his expander and had no complaints of pain with it. It is turned such a tiny bit each morning/night, it's really not a big deal in that regard. DS had to practice eating without his tongue hitting the roof of his mouth (there is a metal piece in the way) so I let him eat alot of yogurt/ice cream the first day or so til he mastered it. As said, food also gets stuck so a water pik is a good idea.

We're starting up with DD in a couple months. Yee haw.

Im 42 and have a tube in my ear and going on 2 years with my braces.. Not a issue at all with my tube. Now I have had issues trying to figure out if I had a sinus infection or it was my teeth shifting.

I have a ? for you when dd was 2nd grade they tried putting a tube in the Dr. office. They made it sound easy. I was told a nurse would put a sponge in her ear with numbing medicine, then 20 min later the Dr. would insert the tube easy as pie. Well not sure if the nurse inserted the sponge to hard are to deep but dd yelled out loud!!!!!!! usually dd had no issue when they would stick the probe in her ear to check or clean out. My dd cried after the sponge incident. Then we wait 20 min. They let me m=be in the room and when Dr. tried putting it in i could tell dd was uncomfortable by her feet. Dr. seemed irritated. DD was still but i could tell she was feeling something. .Not sure if Dr. was having trouble putting it in but was seemed annoyed. I finally told him to stop. After the visit i asked dd to explain what she felt cuz Dr. said she coulodnt have felt anything her ear was numb. DD7 said whent he nurse inserted the sponge she felt my a bee went right through her ear and it hurt. When the Dr. was putting the tube in she felt like a heartbeat in her ear that hurt. So to me the bee going trough her ear meant a sharp pain, the heartbead meant throbbing. Next visit to Dr. i told him i wasnt happy and i wanted dd to be put under, and that dd was scared goin to her visit and she never was before. He felt really bad and has done two surgeries on her to insert tubes. He said after a certain age some insurances wont allow surgery and procedure will have to be done in office.

so my question is being an adult do you get your tubes inserted in Dr. office while awake? If so does it hurt like what happened to my dd? I'm not sure if the nurse just didnt to it right cuz my dd was lil or what. Any info please
