Kids Saving $$

[Needs Motivation]

Last year I proudly announced to the family (DW, DS (then 4), and DD (then 2)) that we would be going to WDW that September. To make part of the planning fun, I bought 3 cheap plastic containers and some Disney stickers of various characters. We all decorated our respective containers with our favorite stickers and subsequently used them as piggy banks for spare change, birthday money, allowances, etc. By the time our trip came around, we each had some pretty good savings that we could spend while away. We told the kids to look out for something they really wanted so we could go back toward the end of the vacation to by it with their money. DS surprised us by asking for small Buzz and Woody characters, instead of one large Buzz that would have cost about the same amount!

Thanks for sharing. That is an excellent idea to save money. Our DDs (6 and 3) keep saying they want to go to WDW. I keep telling them they need to save their pennies. We will have to start a WDW jar for each of them.

My kids (2&4) both have piggy banks that I promanently display in the family room. I tell them every time they clean up their toys or shoes or whatever that I will put a quarter in their banks to spend at WDW. WELL... not only are they learning to save their money for a particular goal, I have never had such a clean family room! The quarters actually come from the jar where we put our extra change to save for souvies anyway!!

My kids (dd10, dd7, ds6) all have envelopes. When they get their monthly allowance, after they put away their money for church, their savings accounts, they have the rest of their $ to put in their Mickey's envelope or to spend as they please. They are all very good at contributing to their Mickey fund, and they each made a goal, and are all half way there at least.

They also know that any change found (ds6 is always finding change at the store, the parking lots, etc) goes into the family Mickey fund. We've saved over $200 in change in six months because of this.

We increased our children's allowance (and responsibilities) $1/week. They were told that $1 should be saved for WDW so that over a year they would have $52 (I think that's a lot for a kid!). We opened a basic savings account at the bank for our "Disney fund." It doesn't earn much interest, but it's more than we would earn just keeping it in piggy banks and it keeps us from digging into it. The kids see their accounts add up in a ledger and they have contributed birthday money to it. We also added their revenues from our yard sale.

They know they will use their money for arcades, sodas and souvenirs.

My DD8 is completely obsessed with her WDW savings... We have made a chore list, everytime she does a chore she marks it off and gets paid at the end of the week.
I work part time at a pizza place and every so often I will take her to work with me to help waitress..... The last time was about 3 weeks ago and she walked out with 26.00, that patrons had specifically given to her..... She makes a very cute waitress.
Our last trip was last December and she started saving in January for this one and already has almost 300.00 saved up. I might have to talk her into buying me something when we are there.
