Has anybody ever taken their kids out of school the first few days to go to disney? Next year I wanted
to take my twins to disney for their 9th birthday and of course they would miss the first 4 days of the new
school year. My boys don't mind but my husband is having a fit about it. My mom lives in Tampa and the
week before school starts is her birthday so we wanted to go down two weeks and spend one with her
(which is the end of August) and the second week at Disney. Has anybody ever done that and what has
their school said. Thanks.

In some school districts, the funding for the year is heavily based on the attendance at the beginning of the school year. I don't let my kids miss school for Disney, although there could be cases where it is really necessary. It sounds like you could push your trip up a few days to get them there on the first day. Disney is great about letting you celebrate early.

yes --

but in some states a child isn't considered absent by the state ratios until he attends his/her first day of school for the year.

I have some friends who son spent the summer with his "real" mother and missed the 1st week of school. The school actually preferred it because his absence didn't affect the attendance ratio. go figure!

As far as missed work -- the teachers really spend that 1st week trying to get a handle on "where the kids are" and reviewing. I'm not sure how the teacher would feel about missing the first week.

My friend and her kids are there now, others have gone other years at this time of year.
The teachers preferred them missing the beginning of school rather than later as it is mostly review and getting settled.

Miss now while they are young!! Missing a few days of state capitals and presidents
is far better than missing the communitive theory, associative theory, or photosynthesis!!

As a teacher, missing the first week of school is the best one to miss. There is not a lot of work for students to catch up on. (This may not be true in high school though.) Some teachers might even waive any work from the first week because the student had not attended yet and wasn't counted in the rolls. You also don't have to worry about asking permission to go on vacation from the principal and receiving a grade penalty if your principal doesn't agree to the trip. I wish I could go then.
