Kids menu for adults?

As an adult, I know that I am not the most adventurous eater. I am allergic to onions, and spicy foods can give me issues as well. Can I order from the kids menu at sit down restaurants?

You should be able to, but why not instead have an adult meal modified to eat your dietary restrictions?

DH and I are very plain eaters, but we can always find something we like on the adult menus. Sometimes at first glance the menu seems kind of "fancy", but then when you really look at it it's really just steak and mashed potatoes or chicken and green beans.

while all of the above may be true as well
yes, they will allow you to eat kid menu items

If it's kid menu portions it won't come with drink and dessert
They MAY require that you pay a higher price for an adult sized portion (or this is an option if you ask for it) - I have never had this happen to me when ordering a kid meal but have read about it here

but it's Disney, they are not going to say a kid of ANY age can't have the chicken fingers. It's just a matter of how much of a loss leader it turns into if that makes sense... kid meals do not make a lot of money, they are there to get the adults in to spend the big $$.

If you are paying out of pocket, you can order off any menu that pleases you. On our last trip there were a few times I wasn't hungry enough for a big meal and the kids meal was just right - there was no upcharging just because I was an adult and I got the same portion as a kids portion.

If you are on a dining plan, or going to a buffet, you need to order off the menu that matches your ticket/age. (This was part of the reason why we opted not to use a dining plan on the last trip, my DS10 wouldn't have eaten a blessed thing off the adult menus).

Disney is AMAZING about meeting food restrictions/dietary needs. If you are making reservations you can include a note about any dietary restrictions/issues at the time of your ressie, or call the restaurant directly. They can make you something off the regular menu that meets whatever you might need :)

So I’m going say no, not at every restaurant in Disney. I’m not a big eater & will ask to order off the kids menu. I’ve been told I could not at a few places. Off the top of my head these are some that said no: Tony’s in MK, Tutto Napoli in EP, Chefs de France in EP, & Beaches & Cream at BC. I want to say there was at least one more but I can’t remember where.
It never hurts to ask though.

Just to clarify, were you on a dining plan?

I know that if you are dining at one of the above named places as part of a dining package (whether the DDP or purchasing a fixed-price package that might include parade seating or priority seating to a show) you are held to the menu that aligns with your age. But anywhere you are paying a-la-carte it should not matter what you purchase as you are paying up front for everything. It would matter if the expectation was to get an adult-sized portion of a kids menu item, but that's also a different situation and should be charged accordingly.

I'm interested in this. I've never had the courage to ask at TS, but I have eaten kid's meals at lots of CS. I just don't have a big appetite, and those meals are HUGE. Lots of times I'm solo, so sharing isn't an option. Wondering about kids meals.

Nope we’re were not on the dining plan. And for me the whole point of ordering off the kid’s menu is to have a smaller portion so nope I didn’t want an adult size portion. Actually I would love if restaurants offered the option of half or small portions for those of us who don’t eat a lot. There’s a local restaurant that offers two sizes (small/regular) on some of their more popular entrees. It’s nice to have that option.

As has been stated, most Disney owned restaurants allow ordering off the child menu by anyone. However “it should not matter” is not accurate. All children menus state for ages 3-9. Disney is within their rights to restrict those menus to that demographic, if the choose to.

kid menu items are often kind of loss leaders for restaurants. They want to make it possible for families to come and dine so that their parents will spend the big $$ on appetizers, drinks and desserts. They make it attractive to go even if you have kids.

That said a lot of places don't care. I don't like "kid food" kid menus but I don't eat a lot so I will order a kid meal when I can and most of the time restaurants don't care. I think the average american has a bigger appetite than that so even though it comes up regularly here, I've never observed a ton of adults ordering kid meals in restaurants.

Disney COULD refuse but it's not super magical for them to do that and their stuff is already so overpriced I'm sure the people who order kid meals are lost in the noise. My bf's son refused to order from a kid menu starting at around 8 too so I figure it probably all evens out.

If it's the kid food you're interested in, it is unlikely Disney will refuse... but the kid portion... you might have to explore other options like having an app especially at non disney run restaurants.

Yes. You have stated this a few times. I get it.
I only said some restaurants do refuse and they are in their right to.

Thanks everyone for the advice...I guess it never hurts to ask and if not I'll just have to see what the chef can do. I've been lucky in the past to have some really nice chefs who have been so accommodating. We will just have to see.

I was told no at dinner at Be Our Guest (this was 4 or 5 years ago so way before the set price menu). Husband wanted to order an appetizer to share with me and I wanted the French Onion Soup and wanted to have room for dessert as well. They told me no so I think I skipped the soup or something. After that, dd and I will sometimes split an entree if we want apps and dessert too. Of course this won’t work at BoG anymore.

I have never heard of anyone refusing plain food to an adult. Only refusing to honor the loss-leader pricing for the kid menu to varying degrees. Even when servers have been unsure of it they generally come back with something from the kitchen like "yeah you can have the chicken fingers and fries but we'll sell you an adult portion for $25."

Which is the OP's concern, not saving money by ordering a kid meal.

As stated above by @tsme. they were denied food by ordering from the children's menu.
I understand you have always been able to. My only point is that some restaurants say no, and they are within their right to do so.

They weren't denied the plain food, they denied the smaller portion at kid's price. They didn't ask to pay an adult price for an adult portion because that was not why they wanted the kid's meal. The op is asking about plain food, not money saving for a smaller portion. I have never heard of Disney not accommodating plain eaters with food off the kid menu (maybe you have but I have never seen it)... but to varying degrees at kid prices... sometimes without drink and dessert but smaller entree at kid price, sometimes an adult sized portion of plain food at a full entree price, but never "no you may NOT have those chicken fingers"... which is the specific question the OP is asking. Disney is great for special needs and special needs kids with texture issues grow into special needs "Disney adults" and eventually true adults. I have followed reports closely for obvious reasons and have never heard of Disney denying simple plain food off the kid menu to anyone. At worst I've seen the server have to go ask in the kitchen and offer an adult sized portion of plain food at a higher price... which most people who are in need of that kind of a thing are glad to pay to be able to experience a restaurant with their family.

I've only done this at Skipper Canteen, but it was no problem there.
