I'm not a big eater. If I'm paying out of pocket for my meal can I order off the kids menu? We usually have the QS plan and order how they say to have to when using the plan. This time we decided to pay out of pocket for our food. I was wondering if it was different.

When paying out of pocket, there is never an issue with an adult ordering a kid's meal at a Counter Service restaurant. The person taking your order has no idea if you are ordering for yourself or ordering for a child. They just ring up your order and hand you a receipt. At Table Service restaurants, there is usually no problem, though some have reported being questioned. This is probably the result of servers acting on their own accord trying to inflate the bill and as a result, their tip as well, as opposed to being a Disney policy prohibiting the practice.

Most a la carte places will allow an adult to order off of the child's menu. There have been a few reports of some venues (mostly third party owned/operated) not allowing it, so it's best to check with the restaurant.

Adults cannot pay the child's price, regardless of what is ordered/eaten, at buffets (e.g., Chef Mickey), all-you-care-to-eat/family style meals (e.g., 'Ohana), dinner shows (e.g., HDDR), fixed priced meals (e.g., CRT), or dining packages (e.g., Fantasmic dining package).

There have been occasional posts that a server or TS restaurant where you order from a menu would not let an adult or older child order from the kids menu. However, all the kids menus I've seen do say "For Guests Ages 9 and Under" so a restaurant can limit the menu to children if it wishes, although it doesn't happen very often.
