Double check your coverage as the exam may be covered. We have HMO Blue New England (BCBS) and eye exams are covered. DS had one when he was entering Kindergarten last year.

As for the glasses, I would say shop around for the best price. Look online and at some of your local stores. ( My DS did not need glasses so not sure about prices for Kids. I got my glasses at Sears but I have coverage for the glasses and only had to pay about $40 based on the coverage I have.)

Definitely check your coverage. If this is a state insurance program for low-income families, then you may be covered for both exam and materials for kids but not adults. I know that the PA CHiP program covers exam and 2 pairs of eyeglasses per year for most children.

Other health insurances may have a discount program for exams and materials with network doctors. I have Aetna for my health insurance but I don't carry vision. My health insurance actually contracts through EyeMed for discounts. Eye exams are $42 ($82 for a contact lens exam and fitting). I get 40% off the retail cost of frames and pay $40 for single vision lenses and get 5% off of disposable contacts. So check your plan benefits.

Our insurance also covers only the exam. I get my contacts through an online company called Coastal.com and my glasses through 39dollarglasses.com. I only wear my glasses at night so I'm okay with them not being top of the line.

I can't help with the actual exams, but if your insurance doesn't cover glasses, or you're looking for a more affordable option, check out Zenni optical! DH pays at most $20 for his glasses and lenses!

I just ordered a pair from Zenni and I am waiting on them to be delivered. I spent $23.85 TOTAL. I am really, really hoping these turn out to be halfway decent. I also only wear them at night, so they don't need to be top of the line. My son just had his frames break. Hopefully they can be repaired, but I will definitely get a backup pair for both kids' glasses at Zenni if they are good glasses.

DW just spent over $500 for a pair of glasses through our eye doctor  That inspired me to look elsewhere.

Zenni has amazing glasses...much cheaper than through an eye doctor. In fact my Zenni glasses last longer and hold up better than the designer brands at Lens Crafters.

DH ordered transitions from Zenni earlier this month. He loves them. They were 100 bucks...but by far much cheaper than through our eye doctor. :)

I like to have a couple pairs of glasses to wear. So Zenni works well for me. The only glasses I still get from my eye doctor are sunglasses. Zenni just doesn't have anything with enough eye coverage to make me happy.

For Kids' glasses I do Walmart as they warranty them for a year at no cost.

As for insurance, if your BCBS doesn't cover than I suggest looking into VSP. It is not that expensive (or at least for my ex it is not that much) and covers 1 eye exam a year with a copay. It also covers a big portion of the glasses.

Costco and BJ's have great prices on glasses. I'm not sure about Costco, but I'm almost positive that you don't need to be a member at BJ's to buy them there.

we need an eye exam too. We need eye exam and glasses.

Get the eye exam and then ask for a copy of the prescription. Then you can shop around for the glasses.

You can get discounts if you have AAA at certain places. Lenscrafters will give you a percentage off their eye exams which makes it reasonable, then you can take your prescription somewhere else to get it filled. Walmart is a good spot to go for exams/glasses as well. I've gone to America's Best for backup pairs...very inexpensive! One thing to keep in mind if you have a young one in glasses is that a lot of them have very long bows & are huge for them...best in that case to go to a storefront to try them on. That's the only thing keeping me for ordering on Zenni for my ds! Hate spending major money on the glasses when they can get so easily damaged or lost!
