Does anyone know, what cell phone would be good for DD9? I was trying to find Firefly, through Rogers but nothing comes up. I don't want a full fledged cell phone yet...but those "kid" ones you see would work.:confused3

Don't believe Rogers offers the Firefly anymore.

I think some carriers are offering a bare bones monthly play for $17.50. Plus System Access Fee (rip off), plus 911 fee (another gouge). With taxes it will come close to $30 a month.

Here's link to Fido's plan, per second billing so no rounding up like the other guys.
If you push it you may be able to have called ID and voicemail throw in.

We're thinking about getting one for our DD 9 as now her older sister is in high school and if there is an issue about her getting home we want her to be able to call us.

I have an old phone since I upgrade to an iPhone so I might buy a SIM card from Rogers or off Kijiji and do the pay as you go thing.

You might want to also look at Virgin Mobile. One of their pay as you go you can top up for little as $5.00 a month and includes VM & call display.

Also you may want to see who your current carrier is and see if they'll offer you some kind of incentive.

For our older 2 we bought Pay as you Go phone bundles from Wal-Mart and I put 10 dollars on each phone each month.:goodvibes

There was some news recently about cell phone use by children. Who knows what's a danger or not these day...

Risks for Children

There are no studies of adults who used cell phones extensively as children and adolescents. Now that many children use cell phones, such studies are needed to determine whether children might be more vulnerable to radiation exposure than adults. Researchers also warn that the effects will be compounded in children and teenagers as they have started using cell phones earlier than adults and will continue to use them for longer.

While studies of adults have focused on cancer, a study published in the medical journal Epidemiology in July 2008 suggests that cell phone exposure could affect children's behavior. The children in the study who were hyperactive or had emotional or behavioral problems, including trouble getting along with other kids were much more likely to have mothers who used cell phones during pregnancy. The children's problems, as reported by their mothers, were even more pronounced for children whose mothers used cell phones both during pregnancy and during their children's first seven years of life. The children of these mothers were 80% more likely to have problems than children whose mothers rarely or didn't use cell phones.

These results, based on a survey of Danish mothers, whose 13,159 children turned 7 in 2005 and 2006, are troubling but also somewhat difficult to interpret. While the levels of radiation the children experienced because of their mothers' use were likely very small, we also know from a study published in the July 7 issue of Physics in Medicine and Biology, that the brains of children under 8 absorb twice as much radiation from cell phones as do adults. On the other hand, if mothers using cell phones are paying less attention to their children, that could also contribute to children's behavioral problems. Research that provides more details of cell phone usage and other factors is needed to interpret the relationship between a mother's cell phone use and her child's behavior, but meanwhile pregnant women and mothers of young children should consider limiting their use of cell phones.

Precautions

Scientists recognize that most people are not going to stop using cell phones. Since these studies suggest their may be risks, Dr. Khurana and Dr. Herberman recommend precautions that cell phone users can take.

Limit the number of calls you make

Limit the length of your calls

Use hands free devices or hold the phone away from your body

When speaking on your cell phone, alternate sides

Limit your cell phone use in rural areas. More radiation is emitted when you are further from a cell phone tower.

Go through these guidelines with your children and limit cell phone use by young children.

In summary, the published research evidence so far indicates that using cell phones for several years does not have a clear impact on brain tumors or cancers. However, a growing number of studies suggest that tumors may be more common on the side of the head that is used for phone calls, especially for individuals using cell phones for more than 10 years.

Most published studies evaluated relatively infrequent cell phone usage, and that research is inadequate to draw conclusions regarding safety. The health impact of the frequent, long-term use of cell phones that is typical today could potentially be substantially worse and that is why it is important for the Interphone Project to release their results as soon as possible, and for research on children to be conducted.

My daughter had the firefly from age 9-11 and it really sucks. I upgraded her this year to a real one. She wanted to be able to text and take photos of her friends,etc... The firefly is so basic, and IMO just get her a real one. I am guessing all her friends will have a real one, and then she can take photos and stuff and be just like them. The firefly really wasn't all that great.

Through Rogers, I got my DD10 the Pantech (has a camera) and it was next to nothing with a pay as you go offer. You can set up how you want the Pay-As-You go to be billed (evenings and weekends unlimited but more during the week for $1 a day etc).

But to be honest, I ended up putting her on My 5 which is a great deal at $25/mth and allows unlimited calling to the 5 numbers (mom, dad and 3 friends) and unlimited texting per month. Ya, we had to sign up for 3 years but let's face it - once you get it for them are you gong to take it away??

She has it more for my peace of mind than her enjoyment.

I was looking at that also. I may consider that next year for ds14 when he starts having to use city transit to get to high school. As a matter of fact we do take it away and often do as a removal of privledges....another reason why I love pay as you go:rotfl2: .....this week she had her bedroom door removed for slamming it too many times.:cool1: :confused3

Oh that's a good one ~ I may have to try that!:lmao:

I have a Rogers phone with a good package. When it came time for DD to upgrade her Virgin phone I called Rogers and asked for a deal. I explained that I would be looking for two phones in a few months if I didn't get a good rate. I got $20. per month plus the system fee including 200 minutes daytime, unlimited evenings and weekends, call display and unlimited text messaging. Since we have cable and internet with them I got a further 15% off and they gave me a $5.00 per month loyalty discount. Total is less than $25. per month. The best advice I have is call your carrier and negotiate. They will.

Just an FYI that Rogers now has My 5 + 5 for hih school students and it is less than My 5!! I was mad becuase they said my DD12 is not a high school student with no ID so can't get on that plan. LAME!

Can't believe you took off her door - I thought that only happened in the movies (Freaky Friday....) See what I have to look forward to!

DD 9 slammed her door a few times when she was in grade one. Door came off for a couple of weeks.

Never had a problem since.

We usually have to remove it once a year for about a week! She is very high strung. When she does not get enough sleep...watch out! She just started grade 7 and the math teacher is assigining 2 hours of just math home work every night....it has been pure hell:lmao:
