Has anyone ever had kidney stones? My DH had to go to ER Sat. with excruciating pain. They saw evidence of 1 stone still there and another one that they think is gone. He had x-ray and cat scan. The next day he had no pain, but that may mean the stone has travelled but not passed yet.

Yes, and they are hideously painful. This is coming from a woman who gave birth to an 11# baby- the 'regular' way. Kidney stones are AWFUL- worse than child birth in my opinion.

He may have passed it, or if he is drinking enough fluids, you can 'float' them. But if it's out of his kidney, he's most likely passed it. He will most likely need urine work done to see which type of kidney stones. I am so lucky as I have two types- calcium and uric acid. The uric acid ones can be prevented by medicine and watching one's animal protein intake (fish is OK). The calcium ones can be prevented by avoided high oxalate foods like berries, teas, green leafies, peanuts, chocolate ( :guilty: so hard!).....low fat calcium products actually help. Hopefully his doctor will let him know what to do to prevent this again. I have passed 3, and one was so big I had to have surgery and then a stent put in for 5 days to help the remnants of the stones passed. It was NOT fun.

Yes, and they're not fun at all. My last one I passed in a cabin in the Smoky Mountains. Sometimes after they travel down (the most painful part), they can sit in your bladder with little to no pain until you pass them. Most of the ones I've passed haven't hurt much as they came out. It can be bloody, but he'll be okay.

I was getting tem about 2 times a year. I started to carry Percicets around with me when traveling.

I had to have a few blasted and one retrieved .

There is no pain like it ,no way to comfort the pain. My last ones a few years ago (knock-on-wood) Liquid Demeral did not help they had to give me some crazy thing to stop the pain.

You can pass them and not even know it . I used coffee filters to catch them to take in .

No pain means one of two things: it's in his bladder, or it went back into his kidney because it was too big to go through the ureter.

If it's too big, it may sit in the kidney for a while or it may try to come down again.

Not fun.

I've passed about 3-4 in my lifetime and have had two others "shocked" to pieces. The bad thing about stones is that there is no easy way to get rid of them. You pass them, they hurt. You get them shocked, they still pass and hurt. You let someone go up "there" to cut the big pieces up, you pass them, they hurt. Or, you have to have a big cut on your back through your kidneys to get them out.

It all hurts, even with good drugs.

I started having them when I was pregnant with my 1st child and have been having a couple a year ever since--over 9 years!! My body just is apt to produce them.
They are excrutiating!!!!!!! Worse than childbirth!!
I have some that will stay in my body for many months.

I drink TONS of water, etc. So, that is not my problem.

I have one of these now. I am on Percoset to control the pain, and I am drinking lots of water. I have to go to the hospital tomorrow for the 'soundwave" procedure to break it up. Yes, this is a really painful thing to go through. But know that once you pass it, all will be well.

When I passed one, I thought I was going to die with pain, but all the medical personnel calmly replied, Oh its just a kidney stone.

They pumped me so full a something they said was stronger than moriphine. I had to strain all my urine till it came thru. Doctor said dark liquids cause them as well.

Yes and they bite!!!
I actually am going into surgery to insert a shunt tommorrow after I have had one sitting in my kidney for over 2 months, my urologist could'nt see it because it was too big and I was have enourmous amounts of blood in my urine.. The pain can be sporatic if it goes back in I had pain on and off for it seems forever.. then it would subside and then come back.. make sure they do a good follow up as it is completley causing me agony now, I had a cat scan with the dye injected into my veins (which I was allergic too) and then they saw it and will put the shunt in to push it into the kidney so that they may break it up.. its a big one, Make sure he drinks tons of water and keep on top of the pain meds its the only way to control it.. Good luck!

I had the procedure yesterday......It sure went fast. I was out of the hospital that evening. I am not hurting as much as I had before. I am still taking various pills to keep the pain in check, and I still drink plenty of water. The stone should pass through in time.

You poor people. :grouphug: That is something I hope to never have.

DH gets them and they seem to be getting bigger-It is the worst thing to watch. If they sent your DH home the stone is most likely small enough to pass natrually (? that sound strange) so like the others have said it should pass eventually and he will know when it does. Tell him to watch for it so it can be checked out at the lab to see what caused it. Coffee filters do work well.

3 days before we left for Disney in November DH had an attack. Vicodin (2) at a time to ease the pain. He only needed to take 2 one time. I timed it - he was in hell about 11 minutes.

Follow up is being done as we speak.

First time about 8 years ago, I actually saw him turn a bit green in the waiting room of the ER.

Kidney stones are the most painful things I have ever, ever experienced in my life. I had my first battle with them a few months ago and I remember thinking maybe it was just gas or that I ate something funny; so I actually didn't go see a doctor right away. Then one day, I just doubled over in pain in the middle of the night, sobbing and screaming for my DH..I knew something was going on then!!! Went into the ER, they took me right in and gave me Phenergan for my vomiting and a very strong pain med in my IV ( I think the medication started with a "T" but I can't recall the name right now..Toradol maybe?) and I instantly felt better. I had the scan done and low and behold a nice sized stone travelling down and SEVERAL others waiting in the wings :( They gave me the Vicodin ES and Phenergan but I felt like I was a drug addict because the pain was so bad I was taking it all the time LOL. I ended up passing it a few days later and luckily none of my others have "fallen" yet and hopefully they don't!!! I would take childbirth with no drugs again rather than ever deal with kidney stones again!

Yes...they are horrific!!! I always say I would rather push out two babies at the same time with no anethesia than have another kidney stone!!
