Kid with rash, dr. office closed til monday!

DD had Fifths disease and it looked a LOT like that does. And as someone else said, it looks lacy. Has he by any chance had really pink cheeks? That's another telltale sign of it. The good news is that if he has the rash he is no longer contagious....but the rash will come and go. DD's lasted about 2 weeks or so off and on. The bad news is that it can be dangerous in pregnant women....however, my OB told me that there was about a 90% chance that I had it before and would have immunity to it now. The pediatrician said even if I did get it the baby should be okay because I was in the second trimester. It is more dangerous in the first trimester and if I were you would go ask them to run the blood test for them to be able to tell if you had immunity to it. And I would definitely want a doctor to diagnose it. We went to Urgent Care initially where they misdiagnosed it as an allergic reaction.....I would try and go somewhere with doctors with more pediatric experience. What sucks is at this point there really isn't nothing you can do.....but knowing might give you some peace of mind.

Your post is freaking me out a bit. It's taken us 2 years and 3 IVF's to get pregnant with this baby!!!!! Now I'm really scared....

Relax that is not going to help the baby either! You are reacting to a bunch of non medical professionals.

Talk to the dr on call, and maybe call your OB too.

And yes IF it is Fifths disease you need to be careful because you are pregnant, but you neeed to get him a proper diagnosis. Schools always send a note home with a caution to pregnant women.

GL:wizard:I hope it is something minor,

Mkrop is right. We are just a bunch of non-professionals. Please don't stress yourself over this. We want to help, not make things difficult for you.

You can scare yourself silly reading things about this rash and that is something you do NOT need to do right now.

The good news is that most of us have already been exposed by the time we are adults to the virus that causes Fifth Disease.

Prayers and Pixie Dust that everything is okay.

Please don't stress....that was not my intention at all. I just went through this though and admit I was a bit freaked out too. I am not a doctor and by no means able to diagnose your son.....I just wanted you know that you need to ask questions and if it is get your OB in the loop as well. And after the experience I had at urgent care.....well I'm just glad you are going to be able to talk to your pediatrician. I also was trying to help you relax by letting you know what my OB said as far as approximately 90% of people have had it as a child so there is no need to worry. I'm sorry if I made things worse....I definitely did not want to do that.

Oh my gosh! I can't believe that is what I typed.....at this point there isn't anything you can do.

Looks viral - my kids have gotten mystery rashes, and we've never discovered the cause.

My DD gets a very similar rash every time she has a virus, particularly one with a high fever. Her Dr has always diagnosed it as a viral rash, and says that some kids just get them. Hers is NOT Fifths. It generally starts in the trunk and then spreads outward. I give her Benedryl to help with the itching, and it runs its course within a few days.

It looks like a rash my son had when he had fifths disease. It is a virus... I believe parvovirus... and most people have had it as a child. It did come and go like a previous poster said too. I don't know what the implications are for pregnancy, I think a call to your childs dr for a diagnosis and a call to your ob are warrented.

Good luck :goodvibes.

This is what my boys look like if they use certain sunscreens. You said he went swimming. Did he try different lotion this time?

That occurred to me too; however, I think the OP mentioned the rash was on his butt and I'm thinking that the sunscreen didn't make it there.

Probably a viral rash, but I'll just throw this out there. A few years ago my daughter was in a friend of a friend's pool and broke out in a rash after being in there for a few hours. She had a reaction to the pool chemical(s) and it caused her to have a rash. Never found out for sure what chemicals they used, since I didn't know them and they were out of town (her friend's mom had permission and took them to another friend's pool).

Good luck!

My son got a rash like that yesterday. He has a fever, though. He tested positive for weakly strep tonight. He has gotten sick several times with a "mystery rash." It's usually viral.

Was your son wearing a rash guard shirt? There are rashes that can happen while swimming that are limited to where kids wore clothing in the water. Make sure to mention that to the doctor when you talk to him or her. Also, like another poster mentioned, you can see if there is a CVS or Walgreens or other drugstore within driving distance that has walk-in clinics.

That looks like the rash my daughter had when she had Fifth's- put in warm water it really stand out--after a bath the rash would be a mess then fade a bit once she came out.
Good Luck

We seem to have a similar rash going around here, but it starts with a fever.

I babysit for a few children & it has been passed around over the past 2 weeks. Each child has gone to a doctor & every doctor has said that it is a summer virus. Once the rash shows, the child is no longer contagious.

I had done some "googling" myself, and thought it is possible Roseola. It looks similar to the picture you posted also.
