This happened to us during our first ever Disney trip. They pay the price they were when the trip first starts for the entire trip. So if they are two when you check in, they are considered two for the entire trip. Awesome right?

Free as long as you check in before they turn 3! We're planning a trip in 2016 and checking in the day before my youngest turns 3 just for that reason!
It may not be relevant to anyone here, but I have noticed that the Disney International site (used for non US bookings) now asks for the child's age at the return date, not the date of travel as it has always been
