kicked off southwest?

I've read that some people and even doctors greatly understate the risk of gastric bypass surgery.

Charlie Weiss, former coach of the Patriots and head coach of Notre Dame almost died from the procedure.

Now on the way home we were all seperated and I sat on the isle side with a heaver size gentleman and we were also fine, but just like in any "row" type seat, we both wanted the arm rest. I felt that I did have to hold my arm on my stomach.

I have to tell you it's not a size thing, but a gender thing. Men often feel that they "own" the shared arm rest and that women have to "make do". I usually end up fighting over the arm rest (literally) because I don't want to fly with my arm in a funny position the whole way because the guy next to me claimed the armrest as his own. Men are often surprised to find my arm there along with thiers! BTW, women usually share the arm rest. I am curious what two men do in the same situation.

On the same vein, have you (as a woman) ever walked down the street and find yourself walking in the same path as a man coming toward you? Who moves? Not me! I lead with my shoulder and the men are very surprsied that I don't give way!

But because I could NOT afford to pay for an additional seat at the last minute, personally, I plan on taking him to airport and have them take a look at him. I do NOT care how that makes him feel. If he wants to fly, then he will have to have a pre-evaluation to determine if an extra seat is gonna be required. Yes, I have issues with this but that is the scoop. Sitting next ot a large person makes a 2 hr flight let alone a 5 hr flight just a miserable experience.

I really tried not to respond to this thread but I couldn't stop myself. This seems very harsh. Although I don't spill over into the next seat, I hope my DH would never talk about "me" that way. :guilty:

fine...........whatever.........Like gastric bypass is sticking to the topic....

Oh brother..............upset 'cause I was not sweet and feeling sorry for my honey bunny even though pooh sized people eat and eat and eat and don't suffer when they are squishing people in small seated areas? YOU fly next to someone and feel squished for 5 flippin hours and see how sweet and syrupy you sound...............

So, I guess this thread is getting a little off topic??? Take it elsewhere kids! The original question was about seat requirements and policy.

I have the perfect solution. Go get gastric bypass or the lap band done.. Never will be over weight again. I had it done in aug.. lost over 150lbs and went from 52 inch waste at 340lbs to now being at 187lbs and at 35 inch waste. .. Best thing I ever did.. knees dont hurt, and disney is more enjoyable now... Food doesnt consume my life anymore.

Did you stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night?? I assume so since you don't indicate that you are an MD and are giving medical advice.

Gastric bypass as you well know is MAJOR surgery. I had a friend nearly die from side effects and while I am thrilled it worked for you, it should not be passed off as the solution to ALL overweight folks. I would dare to guess that LOTS of folks posting on this thread are NOT 340 pounds and would not need this drastic of a measure.

Here's one advantage to being "pooh sized". On a recent SWA flight, the gate agents allowed a very large man and his family preboard in order to see if he fit in the seat. (We were preboarding with our 2 young kids) The man did fit in the seat with no problem.

BTW, about the gastric by-pass.....not everyone has health insurance and not every one who does is covered for that. It's a very risky and expensive surgery. I'm glad it worked for you but not everyone has that option.

Okay folks, just a reminder to please keep this thread on topic, and to respect other DIS'ers or this thread will need to be closed.

I hope to travel alone to visit DD in HI in Spring ..........and hope to find few dollars to send DH to visit her too someday in next couple of years. Southwest is the only airline that has a strict overweight policy. Other airlines have class. Since Southwest doesn't fly to Hawai'i (they codeshare with ATA), it shouldn't be an issue.
