Ketchikan Plane Crash - HAL Excursion

Oh this is terrible. I just took pics of floatplanes coming in and out from my balcony almost a week ago in Ketchikan.

Wow, just terrible. I can't imagine what it's like on that ship after such a disaster. My heart goes out to the families. It says in the story that it was a tour of the Misty Fjords. We were in Ketchikan last June (I took the Alaska Rainforest excursion) and I remember DCL also offers a flightseeing of the Misty Fjords. I wonder if this is the same excursion.

I can assure you this is the same tour. I was on this exact tour the first week of June booked through DCL and they took us to promech air for the Misty Fjords sightseeing excursion. We were in the waiting room with HAL guests.

So very sad. We flew over Misty Fjords in a single-engine plane and it was amazing. We booked the private flight (much cheaper than the shore excursion!) when we were in Ketchikan and if we were to do it again, I'd make sure the weather was clear, or stay on the ground. Yesterday the weather was very uncooperative, and may have caused the crash.

Life has risks. Four crashes of a scheduled air Part 135 charter since 2007 is NOT a risk. It can be rainy in Ketchikan and clear in the fjords! Too beautiful to let one tragic accident dissuade me!!!
The amount of crashes in Alaska of small planes is actually very large, so many beautiful things to see without getting on the small planes. I'm usually the person that agrees with you but there is no way I would get on one of these. We are hearing about this because it involved tourists, so many plane crashes there that have nothing to do with the visitors.

Considering that Alaska as big as most of the United States, the amount of crashes is actually comparable to the number of small plane crashes yearly if you combine all of the states. When you consider that a Part 135 Scheduled Air Charter is far more regulated than the private bush pilots operating in Alaska. However, your comfort level is yours. Nothing I can say will convince you, but I would gladly take that risk. Going to Alaska and only seeing the ports is like going to New York or Denver and only seeing the airport.

Condolences to the family, friends, & loved ones. Tragic, for sure.

Life is full of choices. Personally, I make an effort to not let fear drive my decisions. I choose not to live by fear. I want to get to the end of this life, whenever that may be, and know that I lived all the way. My oldest son is a reserved soul and there's so much he would've missed just in his 19 yrs if I let him go with his his first instinct of "Not me!" I ask him, "Are you afraid? Is this no because you are scared? Do you want to miss opportunities because of fear? Kick that mess off! Remove fear and let's talk about it." I've held his hand and stayed close to get him past that first step so many times. And he has thanked me EVERY time. 99% of the time he got past that first moment and he was in a state of pure bliss. I love seeing him overcome fear because THAT is an accomplishment.

I guess I'd still fly if I had that excursion booked also because I truly believe without a doubt that when it's time for me to go it doesn't matter where I am or what I'm doing. It's going to happen. So, I'm living until this life is done. Period.
