Kerry receives semiauto shotgun as gift. A (potentially) banned "assault" weapon.

Mainly because their are a lot of anti-gun groups who would be upset and then conservatives would be all "he's a hypocrit"- its usually a bad situation. People expect Rep.s to be gun-friendly but democrats usually get in trouble with somebody over it.

EB thanks for clearing that up if more people felt that way it would help cut down on many accidnetal shootings especially the ones where children are involved. As for assault weapons why does a private individual need to own one or more of them. Are they that concerned about home invasion etc that they feel they need a firearm that will hold 30 rounds of ammo just in case. I see no need for them for the private owner and if they do need to own one it should be stored at the firing range they attent to use it. After use and proper cleaning it should go back into the vault where it stays until the next time they go to the range.

Uh, that picture looks like the shotgun has a pretty standard stock to me.

I agree. Here is a banned shotgun because it has a foladable stock, a PISTOL GRIP, and the ability to accept more than 5 rounds. Not to mention, it is designed for law enforcement use, which puts it under another of the proposed statutes:

Here is a gun very much like the one John Kerry is holding. This is a Remington semi-auto shotgun. It meets none of the stated stipulations in that bill.

I disagree that gun crontrol will help cut down on crime. I do not, however, agree with the scare tactics that people like the NRA resort to to get people to vote against gun control.

The Stock on the Remington 1100 in your picture is classified as a "pistol grip style stock". So in the vague definition of the description of an assault style shotgun this gun would qualify

If you look at the list of exempt guns, the 1100 is listed there.

But that's not in the bill that I could see. I had to find it elsewhere.

I don't see it as vague, actually. If it looks like a pistol, with no additional wood or material attached behind it, it is a propsed banned weapon.

They list the pistol grip and the folding or telescopic stock as these make the weapon more easily concealed.

You take that 11-87 Premier with the 28" barrel and hide that in your coat. You'd have to be 7' tall with a LONG trench coat to be able to hide it. And that is standing still!

To the comment that a shotgun is an odd gift. In some parts of the country, that is a gift that shows a lot of respect and admiration.

Growing up in a hunting household, the gift of a gun when I was young was a sign that my father respected and trusted me. It was a great feeling to know that my father believed that I was grown up enough to be trusted with a firearm.

This was not a gift that was given and left alone. This was after YEARS of growing up respecting and learning about guns. In most gun-owning households, you learn early how to properly care for, secure and use a firearm. That is all with great respect and conciousness of what they can do.
