Kennedy Space Center

Can anyone share info on a trip to the Kennedy Space center? DH wants to take a day and go. I've arranged for a rental car. Any tips or suggestions from those of you who have been? I've read that it is about 65 miles from WDW.

Also, has anyone ever visited Kennedy around time of a landing (not a launch)?
Is it extra crowded? Is the space center still accessible to visitors on the landing day?
