Keeping valuables safe in a college dorm room

When I was in college 30 years ago,
my roommate robbed me blind. I resorted to keeping alll expensive jewelry at my best friends dorm room down the hall.

I don't worry so much about DS's roomies or even his floor mates when he was in a dorm, its the friends of friends etc. Its easy to walk out the door with an ipod, ipad, iphone, wallet etc. in someones packet, not so easy to walk out with a larger locked box, a footlocker etc.

A bit of caution goes a long way. I want my DS to learn to take care of his things, to be cautious and remember he is no longer in his room in our house but out in the bigger world and there are lots of dishonest people in the bigger world.

ds used a file cabinet that he slid under his bed. The drawers could still open and and it could be locked and unlocked but you had to pick up the bed to get it out. He put his valuables in there and kept it locked when he went out.

We felt that someone carrying a file cabinet would attract attention.

He got rid of it this year since his school has private rooms with key pads for locks in his apartment.
