Keeping track of your 9yr kids

I am the single mother of a 5'2" 9 year old son and I'm trying to find the fine line between safety and smothering.

When you go to one of the water parks or to a resort pool, how close of an eye do you keep on your kids?

At a resort, I tend to give my son a little more room. I have to know what area he is in and I lay on my chaise and watch him.

But I tend to really worry about him at the water parks. I am not a slide person which of course he loves. I usually wait at the end of the slides for him but I let him get in the pools and I just keep an eye on him.

All opinions welcome.

Thanks
Kathy

On our first day at SAB last month, I had my 6 yr old going in one direction and my 9 yr old going in the opposite direction to do the slide. Normally, DS is never out of my sight at the pool but I scoped out the lifeguard situation and it looked well-covered. I found a spot near the slide exit and we made a rule.......We mapped out one route he could take. We timed the first visit to the slide from my spot and it took 15 minutes. Every three times down the slide, he had to find me and make certain I saw him. I could keep a closer eye on DD and stay in touch w/DS.

It worked out perfectly and we stayed for an hour & a half. My nerves couldn't take it anymore.

The next day, he hooked up w/a buddy his same age and we tried the same thing. Worked like a jewel.
