I have allergy-induced asthma to dust mites, pollen and mold (the others aren't too important) and requested an allergy cleaning for my resort stays. Well, actually they just made it a VIP cleaning, which is fine too. The extra cleaning they do is just done at the beginning before you check in, correct? The rest of my 11-night stay isn't getting a more thorough cleaning, is it?

I ask because I just came back from a trip in San Diego at a friend's house and they needed a big dusting and cleaning in their house. I'm used to sleeping in a room with the windows always closed, vacuumed at least once a week and with a HEPA air purifier running 24/7 and I am now suffering from an asthma flare-up. Now that I'm trying to recover from it with my delicious prednisone (ha...), I want to also have an air purifier in the hotel room at Disney. Does Disney have any I can request or is there a place in Orlando I can rent one (won't have a car)? Although my check-in luggage will be mostly empty on the way to Orlando and I will have room to bring my clunky air purifier, I won't have room on the way home if my family buys a lot of souvenirs.

How do you go about requesting a special cleaning? My son is also allergic to dust mites and mold (and grass, and cats, and...) which are severe asthma triggers for him too, and I had no idea this was an option!

We have plug in uv light air purifiers made by germ guardian that we use when we travel. Maybe look into that as an option?

Also you just made me realize we should pack his pillow. Never thought of that, we haven't stayed in a hotel since his diagnosis earlier this year.

When you make your reservations tell them you need a VIP cleaning due to health issues. This is not a request but they have to honor. I have to have this done for health issues. They will not give you any problems as long as they know about it ahead of time.

They should do it each day they clean but you can ask when you are there. I doubt but not sure about the air purifier not sure where you can rent one. Maybe someone else will know. Good luck.

You could ask about air purifier rentals on the Dis ABILITIES board. Someone there should have the names of a couple of medical supply places.

I too have those same allergies. I always call and explain. Plus, we always bring our special allergy covers. Seems to work ok

Making sure you have proper inhalers, since you're only mentinoing prednisone. As bad as my inhaler ever got, no one ever put me on prednisone just for it. So you do have a rescue inhaler like albuterol, right? And do you normally use a steroid inhaler like provent etc? When I'm in an asthmatic mode (and current medical belief that you ALWAYS treat it, but I don't go along with most current medical beliefs, so I take care of it when it comes along and am happy and drug-free when I'm not in allergic/asthmatic mode) I always have my albuterol with me. I'm not huge into steroids, but if I'm really bad I will take provent; I do NOT take the combo drugs that have the disclaimer that they cause a higher chance of death in case of acute attack (advair and things like that). So the albuterol, when I'm at my worst, is taken regularly AND is used extra if I need it. I hope you have a protocol similar, as that got me through the years we stupidly owned a cat (a wonderful sweet darling cat, but I'd never lived with an indoor cat and didn't know how bad it would be). Anyway, mentioning just prednisone worries me and I want to make sure you're OK.

Remember that it's not just the room you might be dealing with. It's the whole new area that you'll be in. San Diego, where my brother lives, can hurt me a lot, so I'm extra careful there.

Thanks, that's a good idea. Didn't really think of utilizing that board since I never really think of it applying to me. I guess, since I'm using the VIP cleaning, I kinda do?

Yes, I am on my regular inhaler (QVAR) and have been using my rescue inhaler. Even adding Benedryl-D didn't help much. I usually feel good enough to skip my regular inhaler for longer than my allergist would like for the same reason. But at least until this flare-up passes, I'm on QVAR again. Thanks for worrying.

Hm, and I'm not sure what's up with that San Diego air, then. Maybe it was also exposure to different pollen I only see every few years.

My son also has asthma, and the air in Orlando combined with hotel room air & all seems to trigger it.
We bought a travel nebulizer - best thing ever! Much smaller than the huge bulky one we have at home. I'd look into one as well, as the inhalers sometimes aren't enough.
Ugh, prednisone! Yuck, but it can be a miracle cure for a really bad stretch!

We had the VIP cleaning once, and it helped so much! The room was so clean! He had the best trip ever that time (BWI).

I agree to look into renting a hepa air filter from a medical supply place. I don't know what is available, so the only other option I can think of is shipping one, but that can be costly, and you'd have to ship it home again too. Maybe the deep cleaning will be enough. They should vacuum daily, and the a/c filter will be a new one.
