My son is now 6 months old and will be about 10 months when we make our trip in May.

What does everyone give their child this age to keep them hydrated? He is not much for juice.

Any tips/advice would be helpful.

Thanks,
Tracy

We gave my DS water and milk. AT 10 months, I would opt for formula/breastmilk (which ever you are doing) and water. If you're BF-ing....in hot weather, babies to more frequent shorter periods - basically stopping before the hindmilk and this keeps them hydrated. If you FF, there's all the water in the formula.

DD was 11 months when we went in October and it was HOT! *I* have never been so thirsty in my life. I drank and drank and never had to go potty which shows just how much fluids my body was needing.

What we did for the kids was pack their favorite juices. We also bumped up their milk ounces per day. I know your son doesn't like juice, which is GREAT since juices are bad in so many ways. So, if I were you, I would start giving him just plain water in a sippy cup now to get him used to the taste. Maybe by the time you go, he'll be a good little water drinker!!!

And since our kids were straw drinkers, we would give them sips of whatever we were drinking too if it had no caffeine (like Sprite).

10 months is a great age for WDW! :thumbsup2

Is he nursing? If so breastmilk is a "clear liquid" so better than water or anything else really. Make sure you get lots to drink though!!

Check with your peditrician, but when we took DS for the first time when he was 11 months our peditrican said bottles of water with that heat wouldn't hurt him (It was August). She also suggested frozen juice pops. They wold keep hydrated and cool. He liked those big rainbow one's they sell at the parks (of course we ahred with him too;) )

have you tried pedialyte? It is great to keep around! Kids usually love it and it also replenishes electrolytes they loose while sweating.

We were there when my ds was ten months as well, and these are all great suggestions. One other thing we did was bring a washcloth from the hotel. We kept it wet around his neck or on his head if he fell asleep in the stroller. It really helped keep his body temp down!

Thanks for all the great suggestions! He is on formula and baby food at this time. I thought water would be OK, you know they say no water for babies. My grandparents argue me to death over this and I have tried to explain to them that the formula is mixed with water.

We will be going to the DR right before we leave so I will double check with him.

I have also bought a fan to clip on the stroller to try and keep him cooler. He gets hot very easy (like his dad). Thanks for the tip on the washcloth.

Thanks,
Tracy

At that age it is OK in hot weather to give a *little* bit of straight water (like an ounce or so) to supplement increased regular liquid feeding, but you never want to give much of it, because babies are very susceptible to water intoxication, which is very serious indeed. It's also best not to give it in a regular bottle, because they drink faster from a bottle.

I let mine have a bit of ice in a sippy cup so she can teethe on the cold spout, and she swallows it as it melts. It's never more than an ounce, though, and only AFTER she's nursed.

Pureed fruit is also very thirst-quenching; you could up his consumption of that a bit if he wants it. I wouldn't give actual juice at less than a year; too many straight sugar calories.

We were in WDW in Aug when my youngest was 9 mos. My pediatrician said to give him extra formula instead of plain water since there is water in the formula.

We also brought a stroller fan (and lots of batteries and a travel screwdriver for the battery cover).

Have fun!

I really don't know what we would have done without our stroller fans! Our little ones had a breeze blowing on them at all times during the hottest parts of the day.

I was afraid they were going to pull them off and toss them on the ground while playing with them, but they left them alone. I think they knew they better not mess with the source of their cool air. :thumbsup2

At 10 months my little ones both thought that a water bottle with the squeeze top was lots of fun. They would drinks some, Spit more and just get themselves wet. It kept them entertained and cool! Both are perfectly healthy after having drank straight water. Hope you have a great trip!!

The "no water for babies" rule only applies when they're on breastmilk/formula only. Once you start feeding them solids it's okay for them to drink water.

As far as hydration goes, we took my daughter in May at 2 months old and she was fine with breastmilk only. I would just offer water and extra formula, maybe an ice pop, and he'll be fine.
