Day 2—Saturday, October 23, 2004

After a quick breakfast in the room, Leah and I took the bust to the Animal Kingdom. We went to Dinoland, where I road on Primeval Whirl, and both of us went on Dinosaur. After Dinosaur, we grabbed some fast passes for the Safari, and went to see the Festival of the Lion King show. The Lion King had already started, so we entered through a back door. It was very dark and difficult to find our way down the steps to the seats (especially since I was wearing prescription sunglasses at the time—changing into my regular glasses didn’t help much). I really adore the Festival of the Lion King—no matter how many times I watch it, I always enjoy it.

On our way back to the Safari, I had my first random DISer siting of my trip. I ran into SlightlyGoofy as I made my way out of Camp Minnie Mickey, so we chatted for a few minutes. It’s always nice to run into a fellow DISer in the World.

We then went to the safari, where the DIS’s own safari driver PandyPaws was collecting Fast Passes. She told us she would be driving a truck after 11:00, so we promised we would come back to ride with her. We then took our first ride on the safari. There seemed to be a lot more animals out then I recall seeing during previous trips. We through the baby elephants were adorable, especially when one of them crawled underneath a big one.

We had some time before we could ride with PandyPaws, so we had a snack break. I got a banana and a frozen lemonade, which was very yummy. We then went over to ride the safari. We just missed PandyPaws truck, so we had to wait for a while, but it was worth the wait. PandyPaws is a great driver, throwing in lots of interesting tidbits throughout the ride.

After riding the Safari, we left the Animal Kingdom. We saw SyracuseWolverine at the gates to the Animal Kingdom. I was going to get a picture of him in costume, but somehow my memory card on my digital camera became unformatted, so I lost all the pictures I had taken so far in the trip (luckily I had been taking some with a film camera as well, and most of the pictures would be able to be reshot later in the week).

I decided to take a spin back to Pop to see if there was anyway to salvage my pictures from the memory card (which I couldn’t), and to grab my spare memory card. Leah went over to the Magic Kingdom, and we agreed to meet up at 4:00. I grabbed a bite to eat at Pop. I used a meal voucher to get chicken strips, cheesecake, and a bottle of water. I just can’t resist Disney chicken strips—have to get them once every trip. The cheesecake was very good, but I couldn’t eat it all.

After lunch, I took the bus to the Magic Kingdom to meet Leah. We had plans to meet up with our friend Janet from high school and her husband John. As I expected, the Magic Kingdom was packed. Splash Mountain had 110 minute wait! There were people everywhere, and the lines were huge. We caught Pirates of the Caribbean at the right time, and were able to get on it in about 15 minutes.

After seeing just how busy the Magic Kingdom was, Leah and I decided to call our friends and suggest that we meet them somewhere else so they wouldn’t have to buy admission to the park that night. They weren’t going to be able to make it to the park until at least 5:00, so they would only have about six hours to tour the park, and with the lines as long as they were, they wouldn’t get very much done. We decided to meet them at Downtown Disney instead.

When we met up with Janet and John, we did some shopping at the World of Disney Store. Leah picked up some Eeyore ears, and I got some Mickey ears to wear to the Halloween party on Sunday night. I picked up a few odds and ends, and also bought myself a new watch.

After shopping, we went to the Earl of Sandwich, where I had the best sandwich ever. I got an original roast beef sandwich. I got ranch dressing on it instead of horseradish. It was delicious. The bread was yummy, and the warm roast beef and melted cheese were just amazing. I also got a side salad. This was one of the best bargains in all of Disney World. The sandwich was $4.95, and the side salad was 95 cents. And it was worth every penny. I can’t wait to go back and eat at the Earl of Sandwich when I go back to the World in December.

After dinner, we browsed around a bit more. Janet and John were getting tired, so they decided to head back to their hotel. I had plans to meet some DISers for Wishes and Spectromagic. Leah and I took a bus to the Floridian, and then took the monorail over to the Magic Kingdom to meet my friends for Wishes and Spectro. Before Wishes, Leah, Travellin’Tigger, and I went on the Jungle Cruise. We then went to watch Wishes. Travellin’Tigger wound up leaving before Wishes started. I really enjoyed Wishes (although some rude couple planted themselves right in front of us midway through, and I said, “Excuse me, we’ve been standing here for a half hour.” So they moved, and blocked someone else’s view.

After Wishes, we found a curbside seat in front of the castle to watch Spectromagic. I had never watched the parade from in front of the castle, so that was pretty neat. We were sitting right above a sewer, so we got some stinking stuff coming from it, as well as some steam. Yuck.

After Spectormagic, we said goodbye to my friends, and headed off to the Pop Century bus stop. We had to wait about 15 minutes to get on a bus, and finally made it back to the resort around 12:30. It had been another fun day.

Ihave heard alot of people saying how good this sandwich place is at DTD .....we will definitely try it out when we go in december.......thanks karen for your report

After listening to Karen rave for days and days about THE BEST SANDWICH EVER, I had to give it a shot and yes Karen, it was very good!!!

Great report ~ Thanx for sharing.

TLinden16, I am so honored to be your first DIS sighting this trip.

BTW, I take my 'bust' everywhere I go too. It precedes me BUTT it is what follows me that worries me the most. Sure glad I do not have rear view mirrors. LOL

We arrived at WDW that day and went to MK that night. You are right to say it was crowded! People waiting for the parade at 7 PM and 50+ minute waits for just about every attraction. I don't hink it was that busy in the middle of summer! Despite being a dedicated park commando, I gave up that night and went back to our resort (missing Spectro & Wishes) -- maybe getting up at 4 AM had something to do with it, but boy was it jam PACKED!

Annie&Hallie'sMom-I am so sorry your MK day did not go the way you wanted. As one of those people who held seats for 2-3 hours I might be able to give you a hint though. If there are two parades the last parade is quite easy to get seats for IMHO. If your family is tired, go to another park in the morning where it is not so crowded and then go back to your room for an afternoon nap. Get up and go over to MK about the time the first parade starts and hide under the RR station, you might be able to catch a good view of the fireworks from there and then when the hoards scurry out after the first parade wind your way through and you should be able to get front curbside seats for the second parade. The shops stay open for a bit afterward so you could get a late snack and wait the crowds out before having to leave. Just a thought.

Life is too short to stand in long lines.
