DD 5.5 got her 1st AG doll yesterday from Santa, Kanani. We got the wire brush too. Her hair was knotted and tangled fresh out of the box and by this morning it was a disaster! I just spent 15 minutes brushing it with the wire brush and a spray bottle of water and I ended up with a huge pile of doll hair on the table. This doll will be bald in a few weeks at the rate we are going! I convinced DD to let me braid her hair so hopefully that will help for a bit, but what am I missing? I though AG dolls were known for having good hair. Is there any kind of product I can put in it to help detangle? Any other tips? Please help a mom out!

It's normal for some of the hair to come out at first- so no worries.

Her hair is super long so to keep it from tangling I would put it in one long braid

Kanani is going to be a hard one for little girls to keep the hair nice on. A doll with the chin or shoulder length hair would be more manageable. So I would put it in a braid or pigtail braids to keep it nice. hth

Yeah, we're dealing with something similar. Both of my girls got curly-haired AG dolls and desperately want to brush it. The result is frizzy hair, with tons in the brush. I think we'll be going with ponytails, as well. I'm tempted to email AG to see if they have any tips to reduce the frizz.

Good luck, OP. Worst case is that you send her to the doll hospital for a fix-up (aka - new head) and ponytail her from the moment she gets back.

I found it helpful to divide up her hair into sections. Then, wetting one section at a time, brush each section starting with a small length at the bottom, then move up a little bit and brush the new length and the previous length together until you have brushed the entire section. Then twist the section so it will form a ringlet when dry.

DD 6 got Kanani is November. We had the same issues when we got home with her. I put her hair in a braid and it has stayed that way since. Much easier to care for that way.

This is the correct way to brush a doll's curly hair. Make sure it is damp when you brush it, or it will ruin the wig eventually. Also, be sure NOT to get any of the water in the doll's eyes when you are misting it - or they will rust.

It is very normal for the wig to lose a lot of hair when you are brushing the wig the first few days/weeks. It may seem excessive, but it's not. Trust me, evenually you won't lose much hair when brushing. Just be careful when you are brushing... Don't dig the bristles of the brush into the top of the head - you'll risk puncturing the wig cap with the bristles and ripping it. Also, start at the bottom, like you do with human hair, and work your way up.

Kanani is a very difficult first doll (just like Nicki was). If you child is younger, and you want to keep the doll looking nice - you might want to prepare yourself to do a lot of hair maintenance for her. Keeping Kanani's hair in a braid is a very good solution, as her hair is excessively long and so difficult to manage. I have heard of some people bringing Kanani into their local stylist, and trimming a couple of inches off of the bottom of her hair to make it more manageable - this is a realistic solution - but I wouldn't attempt it yourself unless you are very confident in your skills, because what ever you do is permanent. I would also do it with out your other children (or dd) knowing that you did it - otherwise you might come home to Kanani with another hair cut, courtesy of a child.

Just go slow, dont stretch the strands of hair when you are brushing (that results in permanent frizzing that you can never get rid of) and mist, mist, mist. Wet hair is better than dry brushing.

DD has had Kanani since March and the hair was a mess almost instantly. We took her to the AG store and had her hair done in their salon. The girl used a spray bottle and the wire brush and was able to get it looking much better, but still not as sleek and neat as when we got her. She sprayed small sections and worked from the bottom of the section up. She also said to be sure not to get any water in the dolls eyes or they will rust.

DD has Lanie and her hair is the same way. We took her to the store over the summer and it helped some as well. But its not as sleek looking anymore either.

My niece has one of the My American Girl dolls and her hair looks just like it did when it came out of the box, straight and sleek looking. Its not quite as long, but not short either.

:thumbsup2 D... I was going to ask this on your PTR :lmao: DD got hers in June and Kanani's hair is a mess. I finally got a wire brush but got real nervous when some hair came out.

Kanani's hair is horrible :headache: I love her and am glad I got her but her hair is just awful. The braid is going to be your best bet.

I swear I heard and I don't know where now to brush it with a tooth brush.

We have had Kanani since Feb. and I agree with everyone else, her hair is AWFUL!! Between my 2 girls they have 5 AG dolls and Kanani's hair is the absolute worst to deal with. I just brushed it out again and put it in a braid and told the girls to not EVER take it down!LOL The other dolls we have are straight haired and they all look great. Even Julie, who's hair is super long too, still looks fantastic. Sorry, no help, but know that it isn't you, it is just her horrible hair!
