How many DVC members out there use their points for a Disney Cruise? We've actually booked our first Disney Cruise and I've been on the DCL Forum but noticed there doesn't seem be any "talk" from DVC Members in that forum. I will say it took more points than our use year so we had to borrow and put some cash on top of that. Something we usually wouldn't do but it's a big birthday for me next year and a milestone wedding anniversary. Otherwise, I don't think a Disney cruise is "worth" all those points. But, who knows, that may change after our trip.

My sister in law's family does this every 2-3 years, using 2 to 3 years worth of points. That was before they realized they could rent their points out for $12 per point. We'll see what they do next time. It's a points hog and not as flexible as cash. But they'd stop going to Disney years ago so had points to burn.

Many do but IMO most do not feel that the value is there.

It's much better financially to rent out your points and pay cash for the cruise. Renting points using a broker is an easy process.

DW and I have taken 8 DCLs, including two 7 night DCLs and multiple rooms on 2 other DCLs with extended family. We have paid for our room on 7 of those DCLs with all or most all points including the extended family trips. We find a great deal of value using our points for such trips. Taking into account the food, entertainment, travel, and destinations included into the points cost brings us a higher value than some stays at DVC resorts. We will never rent our points as we do not want to take the chances involved in renting.

IMO the cost is too high as is the risk. Even if it were a good dollar value the risks are just too much unless one is reserving short notice. But it can be a different issue for one who already owns and has the points. For a new buyers there is not a single instance currently where it's reasonable to buy for cruising.

We have used our points for cruising twice now. And will probably do so sometime again in the future. The second cruise we took my Mother and she is still asking when we are going on another cruise.

I'm using points for myself on my cruise this month and paid cash for my son. It made it a doable cruise for me to take and I'm happy with the decision.

For us, using points was the best choice economically. While that is generally not true for most DVC members. In our situation, we live in Palm Springs CA. The Wonder was doing a California cruise for 7 nights out of San Pedro, to San Francisco, to San Diego, Mexico, and back. It cost us the same in points, as one of our full weeks at the Wilderness, our home base. Our savings came from driving to the port, no air fare, no food costs for dining. The exception was formal dining at Palo, and nightly visits to the Cadillac Lounge. Other cocktails were poured in our cabin with the bottles of liquor you are allowed to bring aboard, and enjoyed in the adult section on deck.
Everything is free, movies, stage shows, tours etc., and no theme park tickets to buy.
Our first time cruising, and easily the best vacation we have ever taken. I highly recommend it.
