Why is Michelle Obama's thesis (written in 1985), "Princeton Educated Blacks and the Black Community" not being released until the day after the election? I am an Independent, not sure for whom I will vote come November, but since it appears Ms. Obama is the Senator's number one advisor, I think this thesis should be shared to let us know more about her. JMHO, of course, and I am open to reasons this should not be open for discussion until after the elections.

Edited to add: Found it on the internet today and glad I had the chance to read it.

I was hoping at least one of Senator Obama's supporters could provide the reasoning behind this...

The opposite reason the NYTs released the "story" about McCain. They don't want anyone to read it now.

I have no idea, but you could call his main office and ask? I'm serious, you could ask the question. He's fairly transparent, I don't doubt that she is as well. Perhaps she didn't think it would sell until this point, who knows, maybe you can go to the Princeton library and request it? No idea....

Princeton says it is restricted until 11/5/08. I cannot imagine why a thesis in sociology would be kept under wraps so long. That is a good idea to ask his office. Thanks.

Well, I went to Princeton's thesis site and out of dozens of theses I checked to see if available, Ms. Obama's (nee Robinson) was the only one rendered unavailable. Isn't this the same thing that Senator Clinton has done, make her writings unavailable?

I will contact his office, but I don't have much faith it will be forthcoming.

It really does make you go :scratchin:

Why do you care so much about a master's thesis written over twenty years ago?

I think I would only care about reading this when MICHELLE Obama is running for office.

Until then, I do not think what she wrote matters. I thought the nation did not want a co-presidency?

Maybe its about the first time she has been really proud of her country.

Maybe Princeton rendered it unavailable because someone would run off with it... (sell it on Ebay or such). Or even maybe Princeton didn't want just anyone taking the info off and twisting it.

Or maybe the author requested it to be shelved for a certain amount of time.

Contact the Sen. Obama's office and ask.

:thumbsup2

Did anyone go digging for Laura Bush's college papers?

It is strange. My graduate theses were printed (I had to pay for it) and placed in the university libraries within months of completion. There is nothing private about a graduate thesis - it's half the point of them; to produce new research for the (public) academic community.

But why do we need to see it? She's not running. If she were the candidate, I'd want to know why it wasn't public. There's been some discussion about why Hillary has not released her tax returns and THAT is a valid issue.

Not sure I care about it actually, but she is making herself somewhat a face of the campaign, even if she's not running as "co-president". Some are making a deal out of McCain's wife. Many harped on Laura Bush's traffic accident when she was a teenager. Spouses have certainly not recently been off limits.

I also find if fascinating that folks think Obama is different that other politicians (i.e. "he's more transparent"). He's very inspirational to be sure, but he's still a politician. He's not the great hope of the world (any more that Kennedy or Reagan were the great hope of the world), he's just a politician.

If he's President, IMO, the US cannot afford to have our first Black President fail. The puts a burden on the opposition, IMO. But it also means that I hope he stops his Messianic act soon - not sure we can sustain that as a nation for very long.

I know spouses aren't off limits-I just don't understand why. I don't understand why people cared about Laura's traffic accident..and I said so then. I don't know why people care about Cindy McCain so much. The only difference to me would be Bill Clinton, because he's a former President. If he had been a CEO of a company, I wouldn't care.

Sure, the President is going to talk to the spouse about what's going on. But I'm sure the CEO of my company talks to his wife about what's going on at work too, but I don't care about what her degree is in (if she has one).

Curiosity about the thinking of a candidate's wife. Some people care, some people don't, but I can almost guarantee that many more people will care when a paper is mysteriously made "off limits". Then it becomes a topic for discussion.

Why do they care so much that they won't make it available?? The Obama camp is worried about its content.

It clearly is inflamatory on some level, and would give a glimpse of what she was thinking in those days. And depending on what it says, it might be germaine to todays discussion about her and her husband.

Until it's released, no one will know.
