Just when we thought it was over...

Nicole called me tonight from Dallas -- she's got shingles.

She was taking to a friend (who just happens to be the wife of our family doctor) and she relayed to him that Nicole was dealing with a really painful, itchy, rough skin patch on her back (where they were doing radiation). He got on the phone with her and after she described it a little more, he diagnosed it and told her to get to an medical center. They officially diagnosed it and gave her a couple prescriptions.

It's not really stopping her or anything, but apparently it really, really hurts.

If you don't mind, could I get a little more PD for her? Thanks.

Within the last few years my mom, my grandmother and a 37 year old cousing have had them...and all in different spots.

Grandmother's were on her legs, my mom's were under her right breast stretching around her back, and my cousin had them on her lower stomach stretching around to her back.

My mother's were by far the most painful of the three for whatever reason. They got so bad that she was taking some type shot each day.

I hope Nicole has the mildest case possible! They can be very very painful and most probably she will have "weird" sensations in the area for the rest of her life.

No! Poor thing, my mom had shingles a few years ago and it really is miserable. Nicole has been through ENOUGH, and we'll think positive thoughts that she has a MILD case and feels better soon.

Sorry to hear she's not feeling well. If she needs anything the next couple of days let me know, I'm in the Dallas area but leaving Friday on vacation.

My dad had shingles and counts it as the time he was the sickest, my nephew a cancer survivor also had them after treatments. I imagine all their immune system has gone through makes it more likely.

PD and good thoughts for Nicole.

I know this story so well. Months after my DD had finished her treatments she began having pain around her waist area. She was hospitalized and the diagnosed was shingles. This is very common in patients that have gone through chemo, your resistence is very low and that seems to be when shingles strikes.

Nicole I know the pain your in. Lots of PD heading your way. The treatments are behind you and you just want to feel better.

Thanks everyone. As others mentioned, it's minor compared to what she's gone through the past 6 months (even she told her Mom, "Hey, I've had cancer -- what's a case of shingles these days?").

Shingles are AWFUL and often are brought on by stress. It is a residule of having had chicken pox as a younster.
