The 1940's House on PBS..... what a wonderful show...... It is about a contemporay family that opts to live as Englanders did thru the War (WWII) dealing with food shortages, volenteer work, coal stove..... etc.....

Just wonderful, but it made me hungry.....

It also gave me a wonderful idea of a gift for Pops for Christmas... they sell it via PBS on two tapes for like 35 bucks.....

Thought I would pass this along for anyone looking for that hard to buy for parent...... :teeth:

Rats! I meant to watch that but forgot.

It was quite good..... and should be on again...... I learned so much!!!! I had never heard of an Anderson Shelter.... watching them put it up was quite amusing! LOL

saw it the other night. I love those I have watched the 1800 house and the pioneer one and love them. I think I would love to do that house thing:D

Was wondering about that series-anything like Frontier House(which I thought was a great)?

Same premise.... different century..... great show!

It was a great show. It would really be interesting to try living in an earlier time. Did anyone think it odd, though, that refrigerators were not common household items in England in 1940? I know my family had one in California in 1933 (no I wasn't there :) ) - my grandma remembered the refrigerator moving across the kitchen during the 1933 Long Beach earthquake. That Anderson Shelter was neat - I'll bet it would make a good storm shelter, but it would have to be buried a little deeper.

I watched something like this a couple weeks ago. I don't know if it's the same one, but the kids were sobbing that they were SO hungry, and it was quite disturbing to me as a mother.

I watched the Pioneer ones. They came on about 3 or 4 am.

Very interesting! I liked the family who didn't want to do any hard work:confused:

I just finished watching the show! It was excellent! I love the clothes and shoes of that era! The show was just fascinating. I loved the update at the end. I loved to see how this experience has brought them closer as a family. Didn't you get a kick out of the grandson, who during the update said, "Granny used to be a cool granny, you know, drinking Budweiser from cans and all, and now she's gone into a granny mode, she's not like that anymore." Then further along he says, "Well, besides granny going bonkers from it, I think ..." ROTFLOL!! Seems to me granny may have been a little "bonkers" before the experience. :teeth: I love the change in her! How cool!

Great show and a great gift, Laurabearz! :)
