Just saw Poseidon!

Special effects movie ALL THE WAY!
However, there really was no good story line. When someone "kicked the bucket"..it was like...OH well!
I hated that the characters were all different from the first movie!

One review I read was quite noteworthy & true! No minorities survived! :sad2:

However my 12 year old Loved it!

I'm a big fan of the original. That one was based on a book by Paul Gallico. They kept it sort of along the lines of the book...they eliminated a few characters and a lot of scenes and even some of the interactions between the characters they kept.

Sounds like this one is a complete rewrite. I had an idea that Kurt Russell was in the Gene Hackman role (and he'd have been good)..is that the same character?

To show the Poseidon Adventure on a ship is kind of like the in-flight movie from "Airplane..."

Just had to say that once while cruising on Norwegian and in an inside cabin, the original Poseidon was playing on the TV. I could not beleive it. Not the best choice of movies to run on a cruise ship!!

We still chuuckle about that one. :goodvibes

A few years back on a bus trip to PA we watched Speed. It was funny but I don't think I'd appreciate Poseidon on a cruise... I think I may go see the new Poseidon. Saw the original one and liked it. I'll miss Shelly Winters tho.

My DH is out of town with a friend, and they went and saw it last night - he gave it a big :thumbsup2

I am dying to see this! The original is one of my favorite movies. I know I can take my 13 yr old ds, but is this one ok for my 10 yr old dd or do we need to leave her with dad???

We're going to go see it tonight. I can't wait, this is my favorite genre! We have the Poseidon Adventure (1972) on VHS (The Towering Inferno too - it's my favorite) and I love it, but I know that they can do so much more today than they could in '72, so I am expecting nothing less than sensational. LOL

After seeing those trailers, I really don't think I'm going to be disappointed either and after reading this thread, I feel even more confident.

In remakes, I do like when they change things up a bit so if you've seen earlier versions, you at least have a few surprises. I seen trailers for The Omen remake and it looks identical to the 1st (story line wise anyway) and IMO, that one should have been left alone.

I am super excited!
The kids surprised me with tickets to see it tonight at 7:45...I am so excited! We will have to compare notes later on, Nance!

I enjoyed it but DH thought it was a predictable, summer movie. I actually like predictable, summer, action flicks with great effects so I thought it was lots of fun. I liked that the action started within the first few minutes of the movie, not an hour or so into it.

Great effects and different from the first movie. Lots of similarities but still different.

DH and I went yesterday and we loved it! I had read some bad reviews so I was on the fence prior to going but I'm so glad that we went. I kept leaning on him during the movie thinking oh my goodness, how are these people ever going to get out of there.

OK, DH and I are in the minority and thought it was AWFUl but (unintentionally) very funny. It was cheesy and predictable and we, along with several other couples in the theater, were hysterical laughing in parts (we covered our mouths and were not loud, didn't annoy people). One large group actually got up and left about 1/3 of the way into the movie.

NO offense to anyone who liked it, every person has his/her own tastes, and we enjoyed it, just not in the way the filmakers intended! :teeth:

A complete rewrite! The only things that are similar is that the ships name is the same, The wave is the same...and of course...the ship turnsover...OTHERWISE everything else is different!
AND NO UPSIDE DOWN CHRISTMAS TREE TO CLIMB UP!

I agree..there was one line that was soooooooo stupid i laughed out loud!

This version has taken itself VERY seriously...which I didn't like. The original had some comic moments that made it seem more believable! Also I was suprised that Richard Dreyfus gave a really horrible performance. He played a gay man. In some scenes he was very effiminant, in others he wasn't!

Well, I liked it and don't want to give away any spoilers for anyone, but comparing it to the old movie, they are entirely different films. I actually liked the fact that it was different because you don't know the ending ahead of time.

For Poseidon, I thought the effects were remarkable and I can never get too much of Kurt Russell. Yeah, he kinda does it for me too! :)

I do agree that the character development was better in The Poseidon Adventure. You were brought in to their lives on a deeper level and you actually felt the loss more.

I do think I prefer the older one more (Kurt Russell aside, I mean) but I will be adding this one to our DVD collection once it's released. IMO, it's a disaster film worth watching over and over. Kurt might have something to do with that though. ;)

I saw the original as a kid and it scared me to death!I dont think I'll go see this one-I can only imagine how the special effects have improved since the 70's version and Im not sure I want to experience it.

The original didn't scare me, but I would think this would be so much better just based on special effects alone. There has been such a huge improvement in them since the original came out.

I agree on all points. I really liked Poseidon, but it definitely was missing the character development that made the original so great. They could have lengthened the movie just 15 minutes for that purpose and it would have made a big difference, IMO.

Without giving anything away, the elevator shaft scene and the part where they are in the ventilation ducts...wow.

This movie did not impress my 19 yo DD and 15 yo DS on a large scale....I think they liked it but they were thinking of alot of ways it could have been improved. My 12 yo DD was on the edge of her seat...not terrified, but definitely scared a few times.

As with any disaster type movie, I am always left thinking about what I would do to make it out alive. With this one, I am thinking I probably would have died trying, LOL.
