We just returned yesterday after staying in site number 2032 from March 9-15.
The check in was easy easy. We got our site right away, early around noon.
The site itself measured approx 35 x 20 with a 10 x 12 part for the grill area. We squeezed 2 large tents, 10x20 and 15x16 and also a 9x8 tent on, and put our 10x10 canopy up partially on the pavement. We put the picnic table by the grill, so under the canopy was the cooking area and the sitting in the chairs area.
The water and electric is up front of the tent pad, and there are trash cans and recycle along the loop.
This site, 2032 is on the Creekside Meadow side, backing up to the canal. There is a bridge in this area that is a short cut to the 900 loop, so the walk to the Meadows Trading Post area is shorter. The Comfort Station was only a few sites down and was incredibly clean at all times. The water pressure and hot water in the showers were great.
The 2000 loop sites are all on raised sand pads on railroad ties, except for sites 18-22, if I remember correctly. The sites that are level to the ground are better, of course. My smaller children kept falling off the raised pad.
Unfortunately, the clearing is not looking good. It kind of looks like a big mess right now. But I did see some crews starting to plant new trees along the road. Maybe by summer, it will look a little better.
One thing that happened that wasnt so great the first night there, a family arrived by shuttle at 2 am!!
And with the shuttle headlights shining, proceeded to set up two tents with all the accompanying noise! When I called the front desk at the time, I got brushed off, quote What do you want me to do? When the morning came, I got through to a supervisor, and learned that basically you can check in anytime you want. So if someone is setting up at 2 am, tough luck. That policy should be looked at, IMHO.
The internal buses are slow, and the external buses were hit and miss. Didnt bother us, but some people were getting ticked off. We did rent a golf cart at the end of the week, more to play with, than anything. It was fun.
Fort Wilderness was great. We watched a movie, played tennis, swam in the pool, and had a pony ride. The crowds at the parks werent bad at all. We cannot wait to come back again.
