After 16 nights, six flights and five hotels, we are finally home! We had a great trip overall and I'd like to share my thoughts. :)

Cast:

Me, Lauren
DBF, Andrew

Itinerary:

Oct 5-8-
NYC, Dream Downtown

Oct 8-19-
WDW, Old Key West, Animal Kingdom Lodge
Universal Studios, Hyatt Place

Oct 19-21-
NYC, The Refinery

I'll focus on the Orlando portion of our trip but we had a fantastic time in NYC and I'd be happy to answer any questions!

Highs:

- Weather: During 11 nights in Orlando, we didn't see a single drop of rain! Very unusual, especially for this time of year. It was fab not having to deal with the downpours we're used to and we were treated to some amazing blue skies and beautiful sunsets. It was HOT though, so plenty of breaks were required. ;)

- OKW: It was our first stay here and we really enjoyed it. Our room was spacious and clean and we were ideally located opposite the Turtle Pond bus stop. It was handy being close to Downtown Disney again, which is something we liked at SSR and missed last year when we stayed at WL. A special mention goes out to the Gurgling Suitcase bar- small but perfectly formed with a great selection of drinks!

- Restaurants: We were on the DDP for the fifth year running and this was the first time we were pleased with all our meals! Narccoossee's was just amazing from start to finish and our server Jason was excellent. :goodvibes Other highlights include Coral Reef, which was a very pleasant surprise after reading so many divisive reviews! The quality of both the food and service was very high and we loved the general ambience of the place. Be Our Guest was another surprise- after reading so many reports of being rushed etc. we weren't expecting much. However, we were seated in the ballroom which was just magical and the food and server were both great.

- Halloween Horror Nights: It was our first time attending HHN and we'd opted for the Frequent Fear Pass and ended up going twice (both times until 1am!). I was a little apprehensive as I'm a huge scaredy cat, however it was so much FUN! Everything was so amazingly done and while both nights we attended were busy, we still managed to do most things.

- Hyatt Place: We booked a night here following our first HHN, so we didn't feel rushed. At £65 for the night, our expectations were fairly low but it was fantastic! The hotel has just been refurbished and our room was HUGE, spotless and even included a kitchenette and a massive sofa. The service was amazing too, so friendly and helpful. We were so pleased and we'll definitely stay again. It's located just outside of the main Universal complex and takes around 20 minutes to walk to Citywalk or $5 in a taxi.

- Animal Kingdom Lodge: Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said?! I booked this for one night as part of DBF's birthday present. When we checked out of OKW, I was regretting my decision to move resorts as it seemed a bit of a hassle. However, Disney took care of our luggage (an amazing, convenient service!) and all my reservations melted away once we entered the hotel. We were upgraded to a room overlooking the Arusha Savanna and we were very lucky with the amount of animals we saw in a short space of time. It never gets old seeing a giraffe or zebra strolling past your room and I'd absolutely love to stay here for longer next time. The entire look and feel of the hotel is simply breathtaking and it was SO hard to leave the next day!

- A slower pace: Having been several times now, we don't feel the need to go full-on military-style marching around the parks. Some of our best times were spent strolling around the Boardwalk and dropping into the Belle Vue Lounge, or hitting up happy hour at House Of Blues. :cloud9:

- Late nights: Disney randomly extended their park hours just before we left, so we enjoyed quite a few late nights, including a 3am close at MK! This was great- hardly any crowds and most rides were a walk-on.

- Flights: We flew with BA from Manchester-London-NYC. It was our first time with BA and we found the service, entertainment and food to be very good. We paid for exit row seats on the outbound flight but opted for regular economy on the way back- fine for me at 5'5" but 6'2" DBF was a little cramped. Luckily we both slept for pretty much the entire flight so it wasn't too bad! Our internal flights were with United and we paid for extra legroom seats on the way out and upgraded to United First on the way back- this was a great decision! We were treated like royalty throughout with amazingly attentive service and seemingly non-stop drinks and food.

Lows:

- Crowds: The parks were insanely busy throughout, unfortunately. There were loads of huge tour groups and seemingly lots of corporate events going on, which made it very difficult to navigate the parks at times, especially at Epcot with Food & Wine being on. It was so busy that it's made us rethink October- we might try May or November next time.

- Rude people: Apparently it's not customary to hold doors open for others anymore, or to say 'thank you' when someone holds one open for you! The amount of rudeness we encountered was astounding and disappointing. I have several minor injuries to my legs thanks to inconsiderate pram-pushers. Prams aren't weapons, people! :sad2:

- Food & Wine: I hate to say this but we just didn't enjoy it this year. It was too busy to truly relax and take in the atmosphere- we just wanted to get out of there! Plus, there wasn't much newness to the booths and the vegetarian options were scarce. Any veggies/tofu lovers who are going soon- do NOT try the shockingly bad tofu dish from Japan. I've never seen/eaten such a sad little plate of food!

- OKW buses: We're pretty accustomed to multiple-stop buses, having stayed at SSR and CSR in the past, however it seemed to take absolutely ages to get around OKW, plus the route often changed so it wasn't clear when we'd be getting off!

Wow, that was longer than I expected! :surfweb:

great report & sounds like on the whole you had an amazing trip, shame about the crowds! I'm terrified at the thought of HHN so well done for braving it twice lol, welcome home

Have to comment on the doors not being held and the rude people. This has grown in the past 12 month as I go Most years around September/October time and this year I think we was thanked once. Same with the strollers to the point I lost it a bit in Epcot and told the chap if he hits my leg one more time I will remove the thing from him. ( worst was the kid was not in the striker but was climbing all over the rails and at one point near fell in the pool of berries.

It looks like Columbus week is becoming a more popular time to visit with each passing year with crowds reminiscent of Spring break. Ugh! I bet the prices will spike for mid-October next year. I'm going to WDW in early May 2014 and looking forward to the moderate crowds and the Flower and Garden Festival. F&G will also have some food booths just like last year similar to those found at the Food and Wine festival, only without the massive weekend crowds.

We left the 9th so the day after you arrived and agree it was really busy for the time of year. I know Colombus day was just after we left and there were a lot of people there for that. We found it a lot busier every where not just the parks. The malls and other shopping areas seemed a lot busier. We didn't know if it was just because we had been in January and it had been so quiet that we weren't used to it but it seems a lot of people are saying the same thing.

I do have a pushchair but mine isn't a weapon I promise I am actually scared of other pushchair users in WDW. Some times I feel like I am crossing the motorway when I just want to cross main street.

I remember you asking about paying for an upgrade for a Savanna view at AKL. I bet you are glad you didn't now ;)

On our honeymoon DH and I spent a lot of time just wandering around taking things very slowly and it was lovely. It is so nice to see Disney at a slower pace.

I wouldn't rush back in Oct(especially around Columbus week) its a month we have been in many times but this year was crazy busy.

I hate buses but found OKW excellent, hardly a wait all 4 times we have stayed there. Unless they have changed the system:confused3

I bet we walked past each other at some point, we were there 10th-19th.:goodvibes

I noticed a fair number of rude people this year too. One thing that really bugged me was the number of people on a bus who ler very young children occupy a seat when there were lots of people standing. I appreciate they dont have to put them on their lap but for a short bus ride i always did.

Me too! We had a double this year and i tried my best to stay out of peoples way but there are some out there who are a menace!

On the other hand though there are a lot of people who think its ok to just dart in front of a pushchair, poor Megan literally ended up with an american woman ontop of her as she walked across us and fell onto the pushchair.

We had a few just decide to walk backwards without turning to see if anyone was behind and almost fall on Elsie. Dave actually had to grab one woman or she would have been sat right on Elsie and she was quite a large woman as well.

Don't mention that on the US boards, you'll start a war, lol!

I think it's a cultural thing - I was always brought up to give my seat up as a child, and I expect my kids to do the same. If kids are tired, sit them on your lap - it's just about being considerate to other people :)

I would give up my seat before I made my child give up their seat TBH we are happy to stand DD is more likely to fall asleep on one of us if we are stood and we will do anything for a quick rest lol.

Me too, I give my kids my seat so please don't judge all of us. I would move my daughters for the elderly, disabled or a mother and baby but that's probably it.

And I agree (and said so in my highs and lows), I felt people were significantly ruder this year than any other before. Almost like a complete culture shift, so many more angry drivers too, it's usually pretty laid back.

I'm not judging any one sorry I didn't mean for my post to sound like I was. I would rather stand and let me daughter sit but would happily carry her for others to be able to all sit together. I'm quiet happy to stand as after a long day walking if I just sit my knees lock and get stiff I find if I stand and keep moving a bit it's a lot easier on my knees. Even when I went when I was pregnant I was giving up my seat for other families to stay together.

Haha, thanks! :goodvibes

Yes, it's a real shame when rudeness from others puts a downer on things.

I think F&G is a good compromise for those who like F&W but can't be dealing with the huge crowds!

Sounds like overall you had a super time! :)

We did, thank you. :cutie:

Yes, we noticed it was busier in the outlets etc. too. I'd quite like to go at the start of January- early enough to catch the last of the Christmas decorations but late enough to avoid the crazy festive crowds!

I remember you asking about paying for an upgrade for a Savanna view at AKL. I bet you are glad you didn't now ;)

Indeed! Now we've experienced it though, we're going to have to pay next time to ensure we get it! Disney know what they're doing. ;)

It really is. :cloud9:

Yes, I think the secret is out about October, unfortunately.

I hate buses but found OKW excellent, hardly a wait all 4 times we have stayed there. Unless they have changed the system:confused3

Hmm. I'm guessing it's hit and miss- plenty of people complain about the same thing at SSR but we found the buses just fine when we stayed there.

I bet we walked past each other at some point, we were there 10th-19th.:goodvibes

We probably did! I looked out for you guys actually but I didn't spot you.

I noticed a fair number of rude people this year too. One thing that really bugged me was the number of people on a bus who ler very young children occupy a seat when there were lots of people standing. I appreciate they dont have to put them on their lap but for a short bus ride i always did.

Yes, this is something that bugs me also, not just at Disney but on public transport in general. I think if a child is small enough to sit on their parent's lap, the right thing to do is free up a seat for an older child or an adult to sit down.

Great report! :)

Thanks! :thumbsup2

They sure do they upgraded us to a villa last time at SSR and it was lovely to have all that room.

Fab report, im glad others have mentioned the crowds i thought i must be going mad as i thought it was so much busier then other years when i visited in October.
We have been in may and it was lovely F&G is great to see not quite the same as F&W but no crowds :)

lol, don't worry, I was joking.

I'm so jealous even though we leave on Monday for 15 nights we usually go much earlier like end of September and love the hot weather!

I'm really really hoping that the weather stays as hot as it had been doing over there as it seems they had some Super nice days, I'm a huge worrier when if comes to Florida weather lol, and I keep imagining rain and cold since its November!!

It has cooled down - back to the high 70s/low 80s now but still sunny :)
