DBF and I just returned from our first Christmas DLR trip! We got there around 6pm on Christmas Eve and stayed until 5pm on Sunday. I am so glad that we decided to go during the holidays...the decorations made it extra magical. Even though we did two 16 hour days, there were still a lot of things that I didn't get to do.

Anyway, here is the rundown of our trip:

Hotel: We stayed at HoJo's for the first time in Building 1 (Room 606) which faces the freeway. The noise did not bother us at all though since we literally went back to the hotel, showered and crashed. The room was nice with a balcony. The bed was really comfortable and the pillows were not too soft, just the way I like them. The staff were really nice as well. And you really can't beat staying there for $59/night with the Entertainment Rate ;)

Crowds: Christmas morning wasn't too bad but the crowds got considerably worse in the afternoon/evening. We tried leaving DLP around 5pm in the midst of a parade and the sidewalks were completely blocked. The street was full of people shoulder to shoulder and it was impossible to move at all. I definitely felt bad for the kids in strollers :scared1: The day after Christmas was even more crowded and Sunday was just crazy. The line for POTC wrapped around so many times...same with IASW! Luckily, the line for IASW moved really quickly. By early evening (around 6pm), the FPs for Indy were already all gone.

Weather: Brr...definitely dress in layers. It was chilly in the mornings and freezing in the evenings/night. Scarves, hats and gloves are recommended. I think there was a little bit of sun Christmas day but overall, it was pretty cold.

Food: We had dinner at Jazz Kitchen on our first night. The food was just as delicious as the last time. We tried Lucky Fortune Cookery in DCA...we tried the Spicy Korean Beef which was okay but definitely too overpriced for the amount of food that they give you. We had Christmas dinner at Napa Rose. Although the food was good, it did not blow my mind like my previous experiences. I think it was because they only had the pre fixe and everything was prepared ahead of time that it did not taste as good. Cafe Orleans somehow misplaced our reservation card  so we waited 30 minutes in the cold wondering why it was taking them so long to get us a table. The hostess did not apologize at all which really irritated DBF but things got a lot better after we were seated and our server was nice and gave us beignets on the house for making us wait so long for them. We also ate at Mimi's Cafe for the first time using the free breakfast coupon :) I will share food porn tomorrow once I upload all my pictures :goodvibes

Transportation: We took a flight to SNA and took Super Shuttle to our hotel, which was really convenient and cheap as well using the $3/off each way code. Surprisingly, there was not a lot of traffic from the airport to SNA. I was actually really worried about hitting traffic on Sunday so I scheduled our pick-up time at 5pm for a 7:50pm flight. Since there was no traffic, we got to the airport more than 2 hours early. The worse part was that our flight got grounded. We waited for an hour on the plane since the pilot kept assuring us that it was a small paperwork problem and that we would be on the way soon. After a few updates, he finally announced that it was a bigger problem than they thought so we would have to get off. He originally told us that Southwest would get us another plane in 30 minutes, which did not happen. Not only that but there were no more flights to SFO! DBF and I ended up flying to OAK (about 40 minutes away from SFO) and were then shuttled back. I didn't get home until almost 1am :sad2:

Despite the minor setbacks, it was a wonderful trip and definitely one that I will never forget. I loved the HM holiday overlay, especially the smell of gingerbread in the ballroom scene. IASW was really cute as well. DBF an I rode each one 3x :cloud9: I also got to take pictures with all of the characters in their holiday wear including: Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Clarabelle Cow, Pluto, Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore. The princesses and fairies also had on long sleeve dresses/jackets...so cute!

I hope everyone gets to visit DLR during the holidays at least once in their life because it really is so magical :santa: Feel free to ask me questions ;)

What a fun trip! Indy being out of FPs at 6 PM doesn't sound too bad to me (I think it ran out quicker during our trip in June) but your stories about lines and parade crowds sound pretty scary. :scared1:

I'm glad you had a great time despite the crowds and the flight issues!

I guess I've never experienced FPs running out (been in May and August only) so I was definitely surprised to see them out. But the crowds were definitely scary and I can only imagine how bad it will be during NYE :scared1:

Oh no...we were thinking of a December 26-31, 2010....But do not want to pay to for a vacation to get on only a couple of rides in a day...Those lines scare me!

I heard that this year was extremely crowded due to an increase in AP holders. Even though I didn't get to go on all the rides, I still had a lot of fun. Disneyland is just so magical during the holidays so you should definitely go. If you really are afraid of the crowds, then you might want to go in early to mid-December instead when it is less crowded. Just make sure not to go when the Candlenight Processional takes place, which tends to draw large crowds. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time regardless :goodvibes

I wish we could but I am a teacher and can not take off during the month of December...Sadly going at high traffic times of the year comes with my job...DH really wanted to see the DL lights...We have done the Candlelight Processional at Epcot a few times and it was amazing but it too drew lots of big crowds....

We did WDW this past Thanksgiving and it was magical, crowded, but quite managable...We hope that DL would be the small thing the week after Christmas..Crowded but able to manage :confused3

We have yet to experience DL or WDW for the holidays, but can't wait until we give it a go.

The best advice I heard about visiting Disney parks for Christmas was IF your goal is to experience the park from a ride perspective, then you probably won't like it. If your goal is to experience the amazing holiday atmosphere and get some fun rides, then you will enjoy it.

Sounds like good advice to me

So glad you enjoyed your stay... was surprised to hear about Napa; it's always been our fav at DL (and of course the required trip to Rainforest for the kids!)

Sounds good to me too...DH absolutely agrees with this....Just not sure if the kids would agree ;)

hehe...

Maybe its time to Disney w/o the kids? Now that would go over well. :)

DW and I planned a DCL cruise for our 20th wedding anniversary. Made plans to fly kids to Grandma's house in Phoenix. But the closer it got, the more we realized we can't do this w/o the kids... we may never get back again. So, we added them on and never regretted it... it was a blast!

Don't know why I mentioned that other than to say, it sounds good sometimes to go w/o them... just doesn't feel right to do it.

Might be wise to sit down with the kids and prepare them for the crowds. I can tell you after living in LA for 6 years and doing several trips during week you are going, I can tell you that was THE busiest times we ever experienced at DL. Just go prepared for it and determined to love evvery crowd filled moment!

I agree that it is the best advice regarding the holidays and that was exactly what I thought when I was there this past weekend. I figured I can always go on the usual rides during our upcoming trips since DBF and I got PAPs this year. That is why I made it a point to go on HMH and IASW at least a few times each and of course see the Christmas parade and fireworks. Even though it was extremely crowded, I still had an awesome time. The Christmas decorations were so beautiful and even more amazing at night.

I too was a little disappointed about Napa Rose but it was still a great meal nonetheless. But next time I'll keep in mind not to go when they only have the pre fixe menu (i.e. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Valentine's Day, etc). I found the food much more enjoyable when I got to order from the regular menu. Plus, we always ask for the same server (Rodney because he is so awesome) but he was off that day :sad2: Hopefully he'll be there next time :rotfl:

Well, maybe you'll just have to plan another trip when the crowds are not as bad so the kids can get on all the rides as many times as they want :lmao:
