Hi everyone - Just back from an absolutely fabulous (although hot) trip. We stayed at AKL, room 2259 on Kudu Trail. We had booked a standard room and were upgraded to a savannah room with a queen/two bunks with connecting room to the in-law's.

This is a truly beautiful resort. Bus service was excellent, staff very helpful, and I loved the marketplace - very unique items. Brought back several handwoven baskets and carved wooden animals to give as souvenirs (and for myself of course).

If anyone has any questions, I'll try to answer.

Oh I can't wait!!!

Did you go to the story telling out by the big fireplace? Is this worth doing? We have DD10 and DS9.

What did you think of Mara? Have seen a lot of mixed reviews.

Did you ask for an upgrade? If so, when? My daughter also wants to know if the pool has a sliding board and if it was "high"?
Thanks for the information. I can't wait to visit AKL!!!!!

Wow...that was a great upgrade...I booked Savannah view but you got a very special upgrade. It was a beautiful hotel, wasn't it?

The Waterslide in the pool isn't very "high" although i'm an adult and 5'7" so to me it wasn't all that big. To an 8 year old, they'll love it. It's not super fast but it's fun and the kids will like it.

It is indeed a beautiful resort. We didn't get to do as many of the activities at the resort as I would have liked - didn't do the story telling. We did use the night vision scopes. There was always someone in the lobby with something interesting to look at or hear about the decorations.

I did not ask for the upgrade at all. I never even faxed in a request. I did note when we made the reservation that we would like connecting rooms, that's it. When we checked in (early, at 9 a.m.) we asked again for the connecting rooms and were upgraded to the savannah room. Of course the rooms weren't ready that early, but we hit the parks.

As far as the slide, my son (9) loved it. He went down it over and over. It wasn't high at all.

Mara had good food. there wasn't a very extensive selection but the food was good. They had the standards - hamburger, chicken fingers, pizza. They also had a few different selections such as the tandori chicken pizza (very good), African stew (didn't try), and a chicken dish (didn't try). One thing I loved was in the carry and go section, they had pre-boxed desserts of the zebra domes and the chocolate mousse dessert from Boma. Also, in the carryout section they had a prime rib sandwich that is excellent.

HOpe this helps some.

ONe thing I forgot to add about the staff - We received the wrong picture twice from Dinosaur at AK. The ladies in the gift shop were so wonderful about getting this corrected. I had orginally purchased a 5x7. Since it kept getting messed up (the picture they kept printing off was the family after ours), they gave us two 8x10s. Also my son really got into the pin collecting while we were there and one of the ladies helping us told him since he had so much trouble getting his picture she was going to give him two rare pins which she did. She also told not to let anyone talk him into trading those two. I

Cindabella's Mom - Congrats on the upgrade! We got the same upgrade last October. It made our trip. What an amazing place.

Harambe - We were at AKL in October (DD was 9) & (DSwas 8)and did the fire pit storytelling. The first story was great - about how the babboon lost the fur on his butt (DS liked that one). The second story was a little gruesome - some people with little kids got up and left. In a nutshell - it was about a man killing his son to restore the eyesight of a friend. The friend lost his eyesight saving the life of the boy's father. I enjoyed sitting in the big rockers around the fire. Get there early if you want a chair.

NALA24 - We all loved the slide. My DD is a big fan of the BB waterslides - so she doesn't go for the little short/slow slides (too "lame"). She loved the AKL slide!!

Wow, what a wonderful upgrade! We just loved AKL too, so beautiful, so many friendly cm's, great restaurant and great pool. So glad you enjoyed your stay!!
