Just Returned - Crowds Worse Than July 4th!

All I can say is - WOW, was it crowded! This is our third trip this year. This was the big one for this year lasting 8 days. DS14 friend joined us for his first trip so we tried to get in as much as we could in one week. We are DVC members and had our week picked out in January and had air booked before they came out with free dining or we would have tried to switched weeks.

We are park veterans and know the best strategies to follow. We would make sure we were at the parks before opening to make sure we hit the biggies first. On trips in the past, we were often able to do some attractions twice before moving on. Not this time! Usually by noon, we would call it a day due to the crowds and wait times. Fast passes helped but often the window of time was several hours out. The only park we enjoyed in the evening was Epcot World Showcase. MGM and MK had massive evening crowds! The Great Movie Ride had a 65 minute wait on Tuesday night at 7:30 PM. I asked the CM if why the wait was so long and he said all the CMs at the attraction were scratching their heads. Friendship boat operators in the Epcot resort area also commented on the crowds they saw this past week.
Last night, the MK streets were full for Spectro and Wishes. At 9:25 PM last night, the wait for Buzz Light Year was 50 minutes and Space Mountain was 60 minutes. We raced to Soarin at park opening on Wednesday. DH was the fast pass volunteer (he gets nauseous even on Soarin, poor guy!) and the rest of us got in line. Even getting there with the masses at park opening, we waited 55 minutes. We never thought it would take that long! We were glad that we stayed in line since the attraction broke down at least through the late afternoon.

Disney accomplished what they set out to do with the free DDP. It really is genius and a hard lesson learned by us. Don't get me wrong, we really did have a wonderful time. We just ended up spending more time at the resort that in the parks as we had planned for this particular trip. I also imagine that the crowds will thin out weekly through the end of September. Also, make sure that you have your ADRs. So many people were upset because they could not into any table service restaurants.

To be honest, my gut told me the crowds were going to be bad last week due to the free DDP and kids were still out of school. I just did not think they were going to be as bad as they were. I expected them to be around the same (or a little less crowded) as our long July 4th weekend but the crowds were definitely worse.

And of course, crowds + heat + crankiness brought out the worst in the guests. But that is an entirely new post. I know this post seems fragmented and rambling but I wanted to post before real life takes over again.

I wonder if it also has to do with people trying to get in a vacation one last time before school starts. We just came back from a week at Hilton Head and the kids head to school on Wednesday.

Thanks for the update. I hope the kids getting back to school keeps the crowds down. Going over Labor Day weekend and we have alot to do in a short time.

Oh definitely agreed- the crowds were as bad as the week before Christmas. Never again- esp b/c we're not entitled to the free dining. The humidity, heat, crowd level, and crankiness was enough for us to stay away in the future.

Nevertheless, we had an excellent trip and uttilized fastpasses to our advantage. Everything worked well. Soarin was down the whole of 8/16, which kind of messed up the crowd level a bit in Future World. We left the parks by 12:30ish to go back to the hotel and swim. This was partly due to the crowd level, but also because of the heat.

I'm glad that we went from 8/4 to 8/12 - the kids had to get to school on 8/14. The crowds for our trip were not bad at all. The heat was bad, but we took advantage of fast passes and our gold old (actually new) trusty water filter bottles!

Free food will bring all kinds of people out of the woodwork!! DH didn't want anyone telling him where or when he had to eat at WDW.

the crowds were as bad as the week before Christmas.
~ We go to Disney often throughout the year and 4 of those trips have been the week before Christmas. That week has always been a great one for smaller crowd size (at least it has been on the years we've been there) - not even close to crowd size during the summer. Now, the week between Christmas and New Years is nuts in the parks.....

luckily for us DS is only 3 and not in school yet. thank goodness
we can go during the "slow time" (the week before thanksgiving).

Was the window for free dining different this year than last? I dont remember so many posts on how crowded it was last year during the August free dining.

Welcome home.

Crowds suck. :sad2:

Disneyhappy - Wow, you took the words right out of my mouth. I've never been when the parks were that crowed, and a lot of the people did seem to be a bit on the cranky side... We will stick to our regular end of May-first of June time from now on. :thumbsup2

I COMPLETELY agree with the OP!! We just returned on Wednesday and the crowds were horrible. Soarin had a 70 minute wait the day I was there!!! We are DVC members too and will definelty be avoiding free dining times if possible!!

We must have hit the right parks, because we didn't think it was too horrible. Well, except for mid-afternoon. Oh, and the POP Century bus lines. The mornings were manageable, and we were having such a good time that we didn't leave the MK to drive back to Ohio yesterday until 8pm!! (Then, we went to Pop to use more of our dining credits. Used some leftover TS as CS, so we got extra snack coupons...yay! Snacks for the road!!)

I guess we got in at the right time too, 8/5-8/7. I'd never been in the summer time and having been in DL twice in August, I really thought the crowds would be much worse. We were only there Saturday until about 5, but that Sunday we got to MK around 7, and after EMH started it was crowded but not nearly as bad as I expected. And Monday we were at Epcot and did just about everything we wanted to do....

I guess it's all relative. Here's my description:

Mon- 14th (bad idea to go to MK b/c it's the first day after everyone checked in on the 13th, which was the first day of free dining)
~The crowds for the preshow at 8:45 am were so bad, (and this was outside the park in front of the train station) people were in such gridlock, they couldn't accept any more people from outside the turnstiles to enter the park until after the preshow ended at 9am. Now this I did not see during the week before Xmas. That week, the turnstiles kept moving during the preshow so people were constantly entering.
~We had no prob entering the super headliner rides and we utilized FP. I think this park deals with the crowds excellently though. We were even able to ride Dumbo with a 10 min wait at 10am. I think this is because everyone was at Crystal Palace eating breakfast.
~There were so many strollers parked outside of Crystal Palace along with people standing around there that it was literally impossible to walk through the bridge without rubbing shoulders against someone.

We enjoyed AKL and Downtown Disney at night along with La Nouba on Tues the 15th.

Epcot- 16th. We didn't really have any problems here because we did the headliners first thing and went to walk around the world showcase at 10:30am (nothing was empty, it was just nice to get away from the crowds). Soarin said it was down the whole day. We were able to ride first thing in the morning but they weren't even loading the thing to full capacity. Only the left and middle sections were working in our room. Soarin fast passes were gone before 11am- I know this is normal.

The countries were fine. World showcase is a madhouse at night cause of all the free diners. But we were expecting that. We rode Test Track during Illuminations (we only like the holiday version) and it was a 40 min wait at 8:35pm.

Animal Kingdom on the 17th (Thurs) was horrible though. We did the Sunrise Safari so at 9:05 am I rushed out of Tusker House where we were eating a private buffet breakfast and ran like no other to EE. The wait 10 min after park opening was 80 min, the ride was wrapped around the streets of Anandapur. Asia was a complete bottleneck. It looked like a gorgeous day on the beach at Ocean City, NJ except with people standing and sweating with no relief from the humidity. The fastpass line was 30 min long. I don't know if this is normal because I've never been on EE before.
~After we finished breakfast, around 10am, we did the fastpass onto Kilimanjaro Safari- all the sunrise safari members get fastpasses to expereince it the normal way. The line was already 50 min. I know this is a headliner though.

All in all, it was fun. I wouldn't do it again. We had no prob with crowds around dinner times when we were riding attractions. Everyone was sitting inside eating I guess. Epcot World showcase really was no fun though- the crowds were horrendous. We've done Disney several times and are used to crowds- I went to school in NYC and am fine with the crowds at Times Square and stuff. However, I was not used to the crowds this past week when it's considered a "slower time." Disney def won out in this situation. I bet they made thousands during this period when it's normally quiet.

If you're thinking about the times when you didn't have to use FP, this is not true. The reason why it was emptier before the 13th of Aug was b/c that's when all the hordes of free diners checked in.

70? That's all? Last year we were there the first week of August (no free dining) and saw it at 120 minutes! Free dining or not tourisim is booming since bottoming out with 9/11, and August is when a lot of families go on vacation.

Our last trip in early May had very long waits for Soarin too. I think at one time it was 90 minutes. I was thinking 70 didn't sound too bad either considering the circumstances.

Depends on the time of day. We spoke to guests that said they waited in a 120 minute line for Soarin on Monday last week. The times fluctuate throughout the day.

Which parks did you go to on which days?

I hope I get this correct...
Sunday - MGM AM
Monday - Typhoon Lagoon (Crowds not as bad here as in teh past)
Tueday AM - MK PM MGM
Wednesday - Epcot
Thursday - AK
Friday- MGM
Saturday - MK AM & PM

I started to believe that we must have been hitting the parks on the wrongs days but numerous CMs kept assuring us the crowds were worse on other days that week. I remember DH and I stopping to look at the mass of crowds around 10 AM in Epcot and then looking at each other shaking our heads. We had the same thought -"Can you believe how crowded it is?"

Again, we still had a great time and just had to adjust our thinking and schedule. We just never expected the crowd levels to be where they were.
