I just rented from someone and have my conf # but I just want to check on it before I cancel my other Res. How can I do that help please?????/

Unless you own DVC you are unable to call them and check on a reservation number. Only the owner of DVC is able to do that.

You might attempt a 3 way call with you,the dvc owner, and memeber services, so that you can hear them confirm the reservation number.

The dvc owner will get a print out showing the reservation # via the mail in a week or so. Maybe they could fax that to you?

But all of this is relative....the owner has control of the reservation. If you are really doubtful of the ressie number, you probably should rethink the renting avenue. It is not for the worry warts....you have to trust the owner is keeping up their end of the bargain......

You can call the resort where you're staying and confirm it through them, but you can only do that 3-4 days prior to arrival. The resort will not have your ressie in their computer system until then.

The suggestion of a conference call is a good idea. Only the owner can talk to MS, so if you have any room requests or want to add DDP, they're going to have to do that for you anyway. I know you're in the Tampa area, but if anyone in your party is flying in, the owner will have to make DME arrangements for them as well. Those calls would be a perfect time for a conference call, so that you can not only confirm the reservation itself, but you can also be assured that the requests were properly handled.

As mentioned above, renting does require trust. Hopefully, you developed that trust before you had the owner make a ressie for you, because you can't just cancel a DVC ressie like you can a regular hotel ressie.

We rented in Sept 07 ( was such a great experience we ended up buying) the DVC owner sent us the original confirmation letter that DVC sent her with all the info. including the ressie number.
As a previous post mentioned it takes trust - both ways. I did verify that they were DVC owners by going on Flo. orange county comptrollers site and looking for their names ( when you buy they register the deed).
Good luck, hope everything goes as smooth as it did for us. I still keep in touch my the person I rented from , we are serious Disney fans.

Even if you are a DVC member and you get a reservation with someone else's points, you can't talk to MS about that reservation. They will only talk to the owner of the points used to make the reservation.

You could ask the member for a three way call, but if they are a good scammer, they will have it set up so you don't really talk to MS, just to their good friend who might be getting a cut of the money. You'll either have to trust the member and hope for the best or ask to get let out of the deal and keep your cash reservation through Disney.

I keep seeing this suggestion, but if someone was intent on defrauding someone, they could set up a bogus conference call to someone in on the deal. Just have them read from a script to sound legitimate...

Since the renter would have no way of calling back to confirm the three way call, how are they in a better position?

You don't need a bogus call. The owner can just call back and cancel when ever they want.

I haven't heard of any members cheating renters and if that were to happen, I am sure that it would be all over the DIS.

Sure. But, as you know, if someone is intent on defrauding someone, they're going to do it no matter what kind of precautions the victim takes.

As the other poster said, why would they go to the trouble of faking a call? Just do a real call and then cancel...much easier, much less risky.

I haven't heard of any owners cheating renters, although we do have one situation going on right now that is bordering on that.

A little more than a year ago, there was a niece of an owner who defrauded at least 4 people we know of out of +/- $3,000. That niece was listed as an associate on the account at the time. However, the aunt has since transferred the account to the crooked niece, and she still owns it. I have not seen any indications of her renting, however.

If any prospective renter wants to PM real names to me, I will let them know whether the person they're renting from is either of the above parties. Screen names are of no use, because the niece used several, and the other guy is probably concealing his online identity too.

Jim, that is a very scary post - and one worth knowing about!

I also rented( in Jan), and was more than a little nervous, I received the confirmation number in an email (but after the adr time - I just called every day - ) I emailed a couple of times asking for the confirmation letter - never received it. The owner did however provide me with his work and cell number. 3 days before I checked - there was no record of ME or DDP - again, I was a bit nervous... but in the phone conversation he said he always waited until 48 prior in case there were cancellations... he was very nice and also mentioned that he was going to be in WDW the same week...

all went off with out a hitch, but if I had read Jim's post I probably wouldve really been extremely freaked out!

In the past, I have been able to call and confirm the ressie, dates, and names when the DVC owner provides the cof number. Do they not allow that anymore? Last time I rented was over 2 years ago.

No, they don't allow that anymore.

We just got back, and rented. We had a wonderful experience with our DVC member that rented us points. He sent us the confirmation sheet when we made our reservation.
It does take trust...on both sides.

Good point, and goes to show that the conference call, if legitimately made, would only show that the reservation did exist (even if for only the duration of the phone call). The conference call would assure nothing really.

Fortunately, rentals that go off without a hitch number in the thousands, while troubled rentals are truly rare.

bottom line: This is not like a normal reservation, this is more like a "friend" loaning your their reservation for money. It has tons of variables and risks. You are better off simply making a reservation with Disney if you want to stay at a DVC resort for a one time trip. If you don't want to pay that much to stay there, then stay somewhere else. Nothing wrong with that. There are tons of things that cost more than I want to pay, so I choose something else...just my opinion... (Flame shield activated). :cool1:

If they don't intend to scam you, why would you need the three way call? You either trust them enough to give them money and take whatever assurances they provide as truthful, or you don't and whatever assurances they provide could be fraudulant anyway.

Of all the things to fake, the confirmation letter is most difficult - IF you get the orignal on DVC letterhead. The three way call is the easiest to fake, since any truthful, honest member with sense is going to conference you in to the real MS after a membership number has been given - late in the dial in process.

Op, does your DVC owner have references? Some owners do and some don't. Did you get a contract? How was your payment laid out? I rented before I bought, I know how you feel. I even rented for Hawaii, flew there...really didn't know if I had a room until we checked in. It was Ocean view, the best room we have ever had in Hawaii. I worried the whole way there. My husband was really not up for my renting timeshares to save money.
Does the DVC owner post here on the Dis? If so, how many posts?
