Main Street, U.S.A. at both Disneyland® Park and the Magic Kingdom® Park is certainly a colorful place, with shops and restaurants recalling America's yesteryear. But while you're walking along, be sure to notice what's overhead. According to Member Clubhouse columnist and Disney historian, Jim Korkis, the buildings' windows have some colorful tales to tell about The Walt Disney Company's past, too. More...

Wild about safety
Each and every Disney Vacation Club Member is a cherished part of our family. As such, The Walt Disney Company is committed to providing ongoing safety education for our Guests. Some of our more seasoned Disney fans may recall Donald Duck's Safety Book, published for kids in 1954, as well as Jiminy Cricket's famous I'm No Fool cartoon series. Now two popular characters from The Lion King are taking on new roles as safety ambassadors for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. Timon and Pumba are going "Wild About Safety" in lots of fun ways, demonstrating safe behavior for Guests at the Walt Disney World® Resort and Disneyland® Resort. So keep an eye out for Timon and Pumba's safety messages and help them spread the word to make everyone "Wild About Safety"!

Developer News
The inside track
In the April and May issues of Member Clubhouse, we shared details about the interior design of the Vacation Homes at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa. This month, we begin to focus on the interior public spaces at the new proposed Disney Vacation Club Resort.

Continuing to guide our tour is Jacki McNicolas. As you may recall, Jacki is a Development Manager for Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa and oversees its interior detailing. Our tour starts off where Guests first arrive—in the lobby. Using the city of Saratoga Springs' tagline, 'Health, History, Horses,' as a design checklist, the focus in the lobby is on horses. Behind the Front Desk will be a series of four paintings: "Before The Race," "During The Race," "The Winner's Circle," and "After The Race." Each of these pays tribute to Saratoga Springs' rich horseracing tradition. As Jacki explains, "I had to do a lot of research about horseracing, because I didn't know all that much about it. It's been really enlightening. They have a great museum [in Saratoga Springs, New York] where I spent an entire day."

Taking advantage of the lobby's unique octagonal shape, Jacki says "in the center, there's going to be what we call a 'pouf,' or what some call a 'rounder.'" (One of these high-backed round seats is already a familiar fixture in the lobby of Disney's BoardWalk Resort.) On its center will sit a "hand-carved horse, similar to one found at the Congress Park carousel in Saratoga Springs, New York." Jacki adds that some hand-carved panels, like those found in a carousel's center surround, will be hung on one of the lobby's walls, too.

Tucked back into a nook is the children's area, with a television housed in a Victorian armoire. To decorate this cozy space, Jacki and her team have selected "a rocking horse artifact, which will sit on top of the armoire, and some framed illustrations of Disney horse characters." Area rugs have also been custom-designed for the lobby, which has a wood floor. "They're inspired by the thick wool rugs one might find in someone's home, with a more organic design—leaves and florals," says Jacki.

Down the corridor on the left is a lobby seating area—three seating arrangements with comfortable upholstered furniture and Victorian-inspired wood tables. A Disney Vacation Club Information Desk will make its home here, too. In this room, a wall of windows looks out to the walkway that leads to the pool area. Almost as a balance, the artwork offers a window to the past. "In the seating area, we're focusing on the history of Saratoga Springs," says Jacki. There's a painting of the Upstate New York town in the 1900s and a hand-colored photograph of Congress Park, too. And while there is wall-to-wall carpeting in this space, borders are integrated into its design to suggest several area rugs.

Restrooms, pay phones, and drinking fountains are located off of this seating area. "Inside the women's restroom," Jacki says, "we're going to have paintings of jockey hats, while in the men's restroom, we'll have photographs of women's shoes from the Victorian period. So we've sort of reversed things."

Another space that will quickly become a Guest favorite is what Jacki refers to as "The Library Lounge" (an official name hasn't yet been finalized). In this room, a console appears to be built into one of the walls, with a framed mirror placed overhead. However, this is no ordinary mirror, says Jacki: "The mirror splits in half and opens up to a nice bar with wood finishes and granite tops." While there is no seating at this bar (the console top functions as a service area only), there are plenty of places to sit and enjoy your favorite beverage.

"The library has three tables you can play games at, or just sit and talk. There's also a seating area with two couches and two chairs, framed around an armoire holding a large-screen TV," says Jacki. "There's also a pool table. Near that, we're going to have some high tables with stools and a nice armoire that serves as storage for the pool cues and balls." Vintage game boards will be hung along the wall on each side of the armoire, sure to spark some lively conversation.

Thirsty for more? Wondering where you can grab a bite to eat at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa? Well, be sure to read next month's Member Clubhouse, when we'll introduce you to the Resort's unique restaurant/retail concept.

Home Resort Spotlight
Summer fun in the sun
Come be warmed by the sun. Refreshed by the Atlantic surf. And charmed by the magic of Disney. Enjoy a getaway that's sure to capture your heart as you and your family while away the days at Disney's Vero Beach Resort. Located on Florida's scenic Atlantic Coast just two hours east of the Walt Disney World® Resort, you'll find it's the perfect place to extend your Disney vacation.

While you're strolling along the beach, for example, your children can experience the magic of Disney Discovery Club, with supervised activities like Aquaventures at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution. Or spend the day together as a family, playing miniature golf at the Resort's nine-hole course before splashing down our 163-foot Pirate's Plunge pool slide. And be sure to read the Playful Pastimes flyer (delivered to your room each morning) to learn what the Resort's Recreation Team has scheduled for the day. There's much to do in the surrounding Vero Beach community, too, with local museums, garden tours, and special events to enjoy.

At Disney's Vero Beach Resort, you also have a unique opportunity to learn about the different sea turtles that nest on the beach and in the nearby Archie Carr Wildlife Refuge. Again this year, the Resort is offering a special sea turtle program on Monday evenings in June and July. Hosted by a staff biologist from the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC), the program includes a presentation and a field trip to the wildlife refuge to see a nesting loggerhead sea turtle. Cost of the program is $20 and includes an adopt-a-turtle packet with the name and photo of a loggerhead sea turtle, an adoption certificate, a fact sheet, and a one-year subscription to the CCC newsletter (one per household). Advance reservations are encouraged; call the CCC at (800) 678-7853. Payment is due at the time of reservation. Please note that the field trip is a late-night experience, ending around midnight, with up to a two-mile walk on the beach to see the loggerhead; please use your judgment in bringing small children. And while there's no guarantee that you'll see a nesting turtle, the success rate has been about 90% in previous years.

This summer, Wednesdays are even more magical at the Resort. In addition to its regular Saturday offering, Shutters is serving up a Character Breakfast on Wednesdays, too! Share some laughs with Goofy and Max from 7:00 am to 11:00 am. (During those hours, a la carte breakfast is available in Sonya's.)

If you haven't been to Disney's Vero Beach Resort, now is a perfect time to plan your visit. It's also the perfect time for Members to take advantage of great Vacation Points values at this magical neighborhood.

 I'm not sure I think it is a good idea to post the Clubhouse, just copying and pasting it like that - it seems like it is "exclusive" to those of us who gave out our email addresses. Just my opinion. I want all the benefits I can get, and that is one of them.

I sent my email in - I want those free tickets! If you haven't registered, I think you can do it until the end of the month maybe to qualify to win 4 annual passes or some Disney bucks.

I would agree with you if DVC's e-mail went out to all members, but it doesn't,even to members who have registered there e-mails. A lot of DVC members have complained of not recieving this.
So I think they deserve to read it also. ;)

Thanks so much for posting this email. I am one very unhappy member who is not getting emails.

I changed my email to my yahoo account two weeks ago, thinking it would finally get fixed (after they told me my filters are taking it out - ha - how come it doesn't take out the ones that advise how to enlarge your _______________????) (sorry if that offended anyone, but how do these people find us????)

I have changed the address four times now - and no luck with any address.

And still no email to my yahoo account. I think this is a DVC problem, their extract of email addresses must be faulty. Yahoo filters nothing!

Anyway, thanks again! I see nothing exclusive about it and think it should be sharing it is friendly and welcome!

I happen to receive these DVC emails, but I don't see any harm in posting the info here. There does not seem to be anything proprietary in it. DVC members get specials, but non-DVC guests would/should be asked to show they are a member to receive the specials.

KathleenA, I have a fairly new yahoo account & have had some problems receiving all the images in some emails. I do like the yahoo for the lack of spam :).

Me thinks my DD will love it at SSR if it has any type of horse theming.

I do like how we are getting snipets of info on the place, although I (like probably everyone else) would like to see it come in bigger chunks).

I will be interested to see next month's issue featuring the restaurants and shops.

A very noble gesture Nick.

Just don't give away the secret handshake.....;)

Do you mean this secret handshake...

Thanks

Thanks, Nick.

I've signed up several times for the e-mails. They don't seem to be able to get my name on their list!

Interesting info....now I really am upset that they don't send me the e-mail since it appears that it is more than just some marketing hype!

thankyou for posting this. I never seem to get a copy even though I have requested it numerous times.:smooth:

Snowgod - Did you try to sign up for email delivery on the member website or by calling. I did it online very easily - I'm not sure that the MS computer updates the email as fast as going into the website to do it. I know some people seem to be having trouble getting it, but my wife and I are both signed up. She gets hers at work and I get mine at Yahoo. Since October. No problems, ever.

Thanks for the newsletter.
I'll protect it with my life.
Looking forward to those secret handshakes during my BWV stay this summer.

Not to sound like I'm complaining but I get two copies of the e-mail sent about 40 minutes apart. I'm afraid to ask to unsubscribe to one of them for fear I'll be removed totally and not get any at all :( I guess there's no such thing as getting too many messages from Disney. :)

Although I receive, good of you to post for those who don't.

Jimmac, I receive two copies as well and figured the same thing as you....if it ain't broke, don't fix it

Thanks
jaysue
