Just quit my job

After 8.5 years I finally said its time for a change. I was making well into 6 figures but due to a bunch of stuff I was no longer making that after last month. My wife and I decided she would go back to work full time, we already used her benefits and I would take the summer off, be with the DD's ages 7&5 and start looking again. We can survive the summer without touching our savings. But I see some people do a bunch of stay at home jobs. Anyone got a recommendation so that I could earn a few extra bucks.
My summer will be pool, library, zoo, aquarium, playground etc.

I'm on week three. My husband switched to a more demanding job and I decided to raise teenagers for at least eighteen months or so. My house is cleaner than its been in a long time and my kids are spending a summer busy. It was easy when they were younger to put them in summer programs, but for the last few years, it hasn't been, and my son is getting deep into the "no common sense, I know everything, and who ever USES Algebra?!" stage of life.

I won't say its unicorns and rainbows. Sometimes I want something much more challenging than another load of dishes or round of weeding. And, unfortunately, I'm not handy enough to rip out a bathroom.

As for money, the easiest thing if you haven't done it recently might just be to do a garage sale.

Another idea, since this is a summer thing for you, is to do up fliers for your neighborhood letting people know you will pet sit for them while they are on vacation. I pay a neighbor pet sitter $25 a day to swing by three times a day. She lets the dog out morning, afternoon and evening, walks him one of those times, feeds him morning and afternoon, scoops the catbox and feeds the cat once a day. All total, its less than an hour of her time, split up during the day (and her sons do some of it). Since she lives a few houses away, travel time is pretty non existent.

With a five and seven year old, they can come with and it won't be a huge deal.

Hey Crisi, just wanted to say thanks for your post. I hang out on the community board and everyone seems to have these "uber" teens. all of them are together, never have an attitude, know exactly what they want to do in life. I swear I have major inferiority issues. LOL.

Ask around the neighborhood and your kid's friend's mom and see if anyone needs childcare for the summer. One or two kids extra won't make much difference. Even just a day or two a week and you can make a little extra cash.

I am now on week 4, DH makes enough to support us all and I was tired of working/running/owning a daycare! Like PP said, the house is cleaner, the kids are happier and Dh doesn't have to mow the lawn anymore. How great is it that your kids get to stay home for the summer with DADDY!?!? I bet you guys have a blast! As far making extra cash, if its just for summer petting sitting is a great idea! I also had a HUGE yard sale last week because being home I can do deep cleaning and purging, made $400 in 7 hours. Not sure if you would be up for doing neighbors yard work too??

I bet your kids feel like they hit the lottery. If you're handy, maybe use word of mouth and be a rent-a-husband for quick fix jobs in your area.

My friend on the DIS just started going to people's home to care for their pet's while they are away. She feeds them, let's them out, maybe takes them for a walk if they are friendly enough. She books about 3 a week. She only started 2 months ago and her business is booming.

If you haven't already started, begin cooking from scratch. Make your own chicken stock and freeze it in 2 cup portions, bake bread, make soups... All of this saves money. And you will have a nicely stocked freezer if/when you are back to work full time. If your family likes rice and beans, that's a great dish to learn to make from scratch.

I love the garage sale idea. You can also take books to a resale shop. Not a lot of money, but you get all of the books out of the house! There are lots of resale shops for women's clothes, teens and children. Again, not a ton of money, but more room in the closets.

Another way to save money is to figure out something you can give as gifts for birthdays or over the holidays. Gifts can cost a "fortune," so if you get that covered now think of how much you will save. This could be as simple as photo collages, or more time consuming. The only "trick" with handmade gifts is to really brainstorm first so that the gift is not costing you more money than something you would usually purchase.

One year I made tiny doll outfits for the dolls in my niece's dollhouse. I had all the little scraps of material. All it cost was my time. If you like working with small things sewing is an easy skill to learn. You could also make aprons for all the chefs in the family..... You could reasearch now food gifts you could make closer to the holildays, and get everything you need ready to go.

Just tossing out some ideas to go in the reverse of making a little money to saving a little bit of what you usually spend.

What about basic yard work? Mowing, weed eating, pressure washing, etc. if you already have the tools there's nothing invested but gas. A few summers ago my DH was so busy that for Father's Day I told him we would have lawn service all summer. I paid $40 per week (we only have 1/3 acre) and sometimes had them come trim the bushes, etc.

I see alot on DIS "Do what's right for you&your family" concerning trip planning as well as CB I must say this is a #1 post I would recommend that advice above all I'm sure you will find what fits just enjoy the kids sounds as tho work ethic isn't an issue for you ;-) I've been in&out of workforce since my oldest arrived just depended on what stage we were in. My DH now has a successful business yet I still "contribute" by keeping "expenses" at a minimal ;-)

No problem. My kids are great, but they are far from perfect and my son is currently being a pain in the butt. He will outgrow it (I hope) but he'll outgrow it with less permanent damage if I supervise it closer than I was able to with my own career and my husband's career.

A lot of people out here use "doggie-day care" or pet-scooper services. I'd never pay for either, but people do. Our neighbors have a service come scoop the yard each week....
