Just Keep Swimming - a January 2019 TR (Complete & new TR link 8/26)

but this was probably the most disappointing meal of the trip. The burgers were dry and flavorless.
If I'm being honest, I find burgers across property are dry and bland. I don't understand why Disney can't figure out how to make a decent QS burger.

The best part of the meal was my drink - I got a Happy Daze - "Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, Melon Liqueur, Banana Liqueur and Grenadine with Orange and Pineapple Juice", and that made me not really care about the rest of the meal. :thumbsup2
Oh yum! I'll have what she's having!
I have no problem admitting my enjoyment of an occasional girly cocktail. As long as rum is involved.

DH took the bus over to Disney Springs because we realized we were going to need another bag by the end of the trip, at the rate we were accumulating souvenirs.
I've been in that situation before. In fact we're in the habit of packing a duffel bag into one of our other suitcases, because we pretty much know we're going to need the extra room on the way home.

Well, the Happy Daze is just an orange drink in a cup with no garnish so it is barely a girly drink, I think. Gender neutral, even.

When we took our last trip we brought almost half a suitcase of food which was gone and freed up a lot of space by the end, but this trip we brought less considering the kids were older and less picky and we had the meal plan to use up, also we barely did any shopping the last time around. We will bring that duffel bag for future trips for sure!

Enjoying your TR!

I will tell you that I traumatized my DS (now 17) and my DD (now 19) about 10 years ago on Dinosaur...to the extent that they are refusing to ride this summer when we return. LOL

Also, my condolences on your mom...lost my Dad about 13 years ago...time does heal!

Just a quick update to the August trip - I saw yesterday that SWGE is opening the week after we're there!!

I was disappointed at first that we're juuuust missing it, BUT I'm not actually a big Star Wars person, and I'm sure the crowds will be just nuts, so I'm okay with it. I am hoping though with Star Wars opening, they might have the gondolas up and running by then.

We also got a little Disney mail!

My sisters were talking about maybe doing a character meal or a nice meal out of pocket, so we're still tossing some ideas around. My older sister's friend told her that she loves Akershus and that it's really fun with the princesses. I'm not super into a character meal without kids and the menu there is not really my kind of thing, plus I could think of other places I'd rather spend $60, BUT this trip is not all about me, so it's still in the running.

Anyway, back to the report!

Sunday, January 13 - Magic Kingdom (Part 1)

So this Sunday was our resort switch day, our first day at Magic Kingdom of the trip and also the day of the marathon. With the marathon, I wasn't sure what the crowds at the park would be like and also didn't want to put pressure on us to make rope drop with all the road closures, so we tried to take it a little easy this morning. I had arranged for our bags to be picked up at 9:00 and we would leave for the park after that.

I woke up around 7:00 and got ready for the day. We had the dining plan for both parts of our split stay and the credits for the first three nights were set to expire today. I believe we started the day with 4 TS meals, 2 QS meals and something like 16 snacks, so for breakfast I went up to OPR and got some huge pastries from the grab and go that were one snack credit each - a cheese danish, a cinnamon roll and a blueberry muffin, and filled up our resort mugs and that was our breakfast, and the kids also had some applesauce pouches we'd brought from home.

We finished packing and cleaned up the room and bell services knocked on the door at almost exactly 9:00. Handing the bags over was super easy and we said goodbye to our CBR room and headed for the bus stop, where we didn't have to wait very long before a Magic Kingdom bus arrived.

The bus driver we had for this trip (I think his name was John) was easily the best bus driver of the entire trip. He got everyone hyped up that we were going to the Magic Kingdom, entertained the bus for the entire trip (that was made even longer by detours around the marathon route) just telling jokes, knew all kinds of Disney trivia (did you know all of Disneyland, California Adventure, Downtown Disney and their parking structures can fit in the Magic Kingdom parking lot twice?), had the bus sing happy birthday to someone, and just so funny - at one point there were some police cars ahead doing traffic control and he says "It's the cops! Be cool everyone, just be cool." :rotfl: It was a great way to start the day.

We finally made it into the Magic Kingdom around 9:45, and what do you know? Still decorated for Christmas.

As we're walking down Main Street, taking in all the sights, the Dapper Dans are singing, and some kind of bee came out of nowhere and stung DH on the leg! :headache: Not really off to a great start. I asked if he wanted to go to first aid but he said he was fine and did the manly thing and shook it off.

We got a few PP pictures with the sun in our eyes, and the castle was looking beautiful with the blue sky that day.

We were heading to BTMRR for our first FP through Liberty Square. This whole side of the park was so quiet, it was amazing.

When we visited in Nov. 2016, BTMRR was being refurbished so we didn't get to ride it, so this was the boy's and DH's first time - they all loved it!

Our next FP was for Splash, and we were all excited for this - DS1 said this was his favorite ride from the last trip and couldn't wait to ride it again! The SB line had a 10 minute wait, so we just did standby and I modified the FP to Jungle Cruise that we'd be able to use right after. We got through the line super quickly and when we loaded into the boat I noticed the seats were super wet. Like they were drenched.

So we go through the ride and even on the little drops, all this water is splashing into the boat. I don't know if the water level was higher this time or what, but I don't remember so much water coming in last time, and then when we go down the big hill, the boys get hit with a huge splash and I turn to look at DS1 and he looks like he just fell in a pool and I do what any great mother does and I laugh and laugh. So DS1 starts crying, and then DS2 starts crying and it's not because they were scared or cold or anything - they were just so mad they got so wet.

It was a lot of drama so we decide to go get Dole whips because we are a family that eats our feelings. I did a mobile order as we walked down and they were ready in no time at all (we split two of them).

When we were done with those, the next Tiki room show was about to start, so we went in, which was a first for all of us. DS1 loved it, but DS2 was scared by the talking trees. :confused3

Our next stop was the Jungle Cruise, which was fine. The boys liked it. I thought our skipper seemed a little bored. I know that's part of the shtick, but I've seen it done a lot better. I don't have pictures of this either - sorry, my H was filming almost everything on his GoPro, so I wasn't feeling a lot of pressure to take a bunch of pictures.

I'll stop here for now - in the next update we'll have lunch at Skipper Canteen and you'll hear about every parent's nightmare - losing a kid in Disney World. :faint:

My daughter knows where all the water spray areas are and makes me sit on that side of the log every Time!

Oh no, I don't think I've ever heard of someone getting stung in Disney! That stinks, I hope he's isn't swell up,or anything.

because we are a family that eats our feelings.
 I love this sentence and it's totally me. It could also be a great dining report title lol!

I'm with you on no character meals w/o kids but sometimes you take one for the team. I rather do fur characters without kids if you can manage to have a say in it though, maybe Garden Grill?

I don’t normally get into trip reports too much, but yours is cracking me up! You “talk” how I talk....we’re going to skippers canteen for the first time in June, interested to see what you think. Also, we’re staying at WL for the first time too. Any info you want to give on that, would love to hear it!

Dole whips fix everything! :thumbsup2

Yes! ::yes::

My daughter knows where all the water spray areas are and makes me sit on that side of the log every Time!

Those trees are a little freaky :rotfl:

I put my kids on that side of the log because I thought they wanted to get wet! :confused3

Yeah, he was fine! He fishes and kayaks and spends ton of time outside so he gets stung and bit a ton. It wasn’t a big deal aside from the initial shock of it.

I’m trying to convince my sister that she would like Crystal Palace more because we’ve always loved those characters and I’ve never been there. Fur character interactions are so much less awkward!

Thank you so much for following and commenting!

WL was great! I’ll be getting into that part of the report soon. I would definitely stay there again

Aww, your boys crying on Splash. I can totally relate. Jimmy would be the same way!!

Yikes, losing a kid at Disney--the stuff of my nightmares.

I was honestly perplexed at some of their reactions to rides this time around. My kids are usually pretty fearless, but they kept getting upset by totally unexpected things. Kids, what are you gonna do?

Luckily, our missing kid experience was very brief, but it was terrible.

Sunday, January 13- Magic Kingdom (Part Two)

After we rode Jungle Cruise, we still had about a half an hour to kill until our lunch reservation at Skipper Canteen and we decided to walk through the Swiss Family treehouse to let the kids blow off some steam before sitting down in the restaurant.

(sights along the way)

I can't remember doing this on any of the prior trips I took when I was younger, so I really enjoyed it and it had kind of a mixed reaction from the boys - DS1 wanted to actually go into all the little rooms and touch everything and was annoyed all he could do was look at things, and DS2 apparently thought this was some kind of obstacle course with the goal of getting through as quickly as possible :crazy2: but when we got to the end, they both wanted to do it again.

We had left our stroller parked down at the Jungle Cruise and we saw there was a stroller parking much closer to the Skipper Canteen, so DH went retrieve the stroller and I took the kids back through the treehouse again.

When we came out, DH was back and he brought me a cheeseburger eggroll from the cart because he remembered them from a Tim Tracker video and knew I wanted to try them (and if you think I'm the kind of girl whose appetite will be ruined by an eggroll before lunch, you would be wrong). We still had about 10 minutes before our ADR time, so DH said I should take a break and try the eggroll and he'd take the kids up through the treehouse one more time before we checked into the restaurant.

As we're walking from the exit of the treehouse where DH met us back to the entrance, we realize that DS2 is not with us anymore. I was distracted by the eggroll and assumed he was up in front of DH with DS1, but I guess he had been behind us. We panicked and kind of spun around yelling his name, then DH decided he was going to run back into the exit of the treehouse to see if DS2 had gone that way. I was trying to decide if I should go to the entrance in case he came out that end, or look somewhere else, when another guy came out of the exit of the treehouse and I guess recognized our panic and said, "Are you looking for a little boy? I think I just passed him in there!" So DH ran into the exit and found him and brought him back out. The only thing I can think of is DS2 heard us saying he could go back in the treehouse and turned tail and went back in. It was definitely a scary minute, but it turned out fine, and for the rest of the trip, we were much more vigilant of keeping both kids were we could have eyes on them and not let them walk behind us.

Oh, and the eggroll was delicious.

Crisis averted, we checked into Skipper Canteen and just had a few minutes to wait before our table was ready.

Between the panic of losing DS2 and the anxiety of being in a new restaurant (restaurants put me on edge, especially unfamiliar ones, especially with the kids lol), I didn't manage to take a ton of pictures, but I loved this place. The decor and the atmosphere were great. To drink, I ordered the Jungle Navigation Co. Shandy, which is a Blue Moon beer and lemonade. To eat, I got the Thai noodles, this was delicious and here's a terrible picture of the dish:

I promise, it looked better in person.

For dessert, I got the quicksand, which is a rice pudding with lemon curd and it was outstanding. I could eat a whole bowl of that lemon curd.

DH got the steak and I think the kungaloosh dessert, DS1 got the kid's steak and volcano dessert and DS2 got chicken nuggets. Everyone really enjoyed their food, but the star was our server, Michelle. She was just great, so funny and friendly and made us feel really comfortable. At one point after our food came out, DS1 was insisting that he could cut his own steak and I was trying to get him to let me cut it without making a big fuss and Michelle came over and took DS1's knife and fork and cut his steak while she told this whole funny story about when she was a kid and her grandma had very strict rules about table manners. It was a super nice way of her to defuse the situation. She told us later that she has two teenage boys so I think she recognized a lot of the struggles with two little boys.

Anyway, after such a nice meal, we were reluctant to even leave the restaurant and go back into the heat and crowds, but we had a 1:30 FP for 7DMT that was calling so off we went. DS1 wanted to walk through the castle that morning but it wasn't open, so we went that way to Fantasyland and got some great up close views.

I don't have any photographic proof, but we rode 7DMT and it was great as always - DS2 decided it was his favorite ride. Super cute - DS2 thought the dwarves were singing "I hope, I hope" instead of "hi ho, hi ho..." So for the rest of the trip, that ride was known as I Hope, I Hope, as in "I Hope, I Hope is so much fun, can we ride it again?"

After that, we rode the carousel. It was a carousel, it spun, horses went up and down, no one puked, which is pretty much all you want out of a carousel.

DS1 had been asking for the Buzz Lightyear ears since we were in HS the day before, so he picked those out in the gift shop after the ride for his one thing that day.

We finished up our Tomorrowland time by taking a ride on the Peoplemover and playing with the spinning rock water thing.

I feel like I was lacking pictures for this part, sorry! I'll finish up the rest of our MK day in the next update - we close down the park, get together with Fairy Godmother for the first time and deal with the single most frustrating, infuriating experience of this trip.

You have such good luck with same day FPs - teach me your ways!

I called Bell Services and arranged for the bags to be picked up at 9 the next morning and then it was time for bed! Tomorrow is our first Magic Kingdom day and moving to the Wilderness Lodge for the next six nights! :jumping3:

I can't wait to hear about your stay at the WL - I have one night there on my trip next month, and I am super excited.

I love this trivia - and I love that bus driver for being so enthusiastic!

I'll stop here for now - in the next update we'll have lunch at Skipper Canteen and you'll hear about every parent's nightmare - losing a kid in Disney World.

When I was a kid, my brother and I got lost in the Honey! I Shrunk the Kids Playground - we didn't go down the slide my parents thought we would. Luckily we stuck together and I guess looked terrified because a CM reunited us with Mama and Dad about 10 minutes later. It's been 25 years and my parents still bring it up.

I'm late to yet another TR but thought I'd come say hi!

There were no lines for the buses this late in the evening and we were sent right over to our bus and boarded a half-full bus around 10:40.

I actually didn't know the ME went that late, I've avoided late flights because of this...good to know!

It was a lot of drama so we decide to go get Dole whips because we are a family that eats our feelings. I did a mobile order as we walked down and they were ready in no time at all (we split two of them).

Right there with ya!! Yum!!

I'm not super into a character meal without kids and the menu there is not really my kind of thing, plus I could think of other places I'd rather spend $60, BUT this trip is not all about me, so it's still in the running.

Isn't the whole point of an adults only trip that you don't have to blow $60 on a character meal? Perhaps I just feel that way because I planned such a kid-centric trip and I got a bit jealous of people who didn't have to factor preschoolers into their meal plans.

at one point there were some police cars ahead doing traffic control and he says "It's the cops! Be cool everyone, just be cool." :rotfl: It was a great way to start the day.

Too funny! What a nice way to have a pleasant trip instead of everyone grumbling about the marathon traffic.

ome kind of bee came out of nowhere and stung DH on the leg!

Ouch :-(

So we go through the ride and even on the little drops, all this water is splashing into the boat. I don't know if the water level was higher this time or what, but I don't remember so much water coming in last time, and then when we go down the big hill, the boys get hit with a huge splash and I turn to look at DS1 and he looks like he just fell in a pool and I do what any great mother does and I laugh and laugh. So DS1 starts crying, and then DS2 starts crying and it's not because they were scared or cold or anything - they were just so mad they got so wet.

I read reports that the splash was up significantly this year. Maybe that's it? Regardless, if your kid gets upset because he's soaked on the ride, the appropriate parenting decision is always to point and laugh, perhaps while taking a picture.

It was definitely a scary minute, but it turned out fine, and for the rest of the trip, we were much more vigilant of keeping both kids were we could have eyes on them and not let them walk behind us.

I'm glad that it was a brief scare. It's crazy how many worst case scenarios your brain can cook up in just a few seconds, though.
