I think they mean a dependent in the IRS sense. My 25 and 22 year olds are still on our insurance and we do not label them as dependents on our taxes.

I think they mean a dependent in the IRS sense. My 25 and 22 year olds are still on our insurance and we do not label them as dependents on our taxes.

It's kind of weird, because child income isn't considered parental income, but there's often a belief that it can be in certain cases. About all that's allowed is some interest or passive investment income up to a certain amount. But it almost never makes any sense to do so because the child filing taxes will almost always result in a lower tax burden.

It is unlikely the courts will rule Biden has the power to do this (likely yet another Supreme Court decision next year), but it probably does give everyone a continued pause on their student loans - some to Dec 31 and some til the SC decision, assuming Congress does not make that moot by actually passing a law next session.
