Drug suspect commits suicide in Wal-Mart dressing room

(5/17/03 - HOUSTON) A man wanted on a drug possession warrant killed himself in a dressing room of a Houston-area Wal-Mart on Saturday after leading state troopers on a high-speed chase.
The car chase began on Interstate 10 east of Anahuac when officers learned the driver of a green pickup truck with Kentucky license plates was wanted on a federal drug possession warrant, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The pursuit reached speeds of up to 100 mph and led troopers through a field when the man swerved to avoid spikes that officers use to flatten tires on fleeing cars, the DPS said.
The man, whose identity has not been revealed, shot at officers in a busy parking lot before ducking into the east Harris County Wal-Mart.
Harris County Sheriff's Capt. Michael O'Brien told the Houston Chronicle that the man was carrying a small-caliber semiautomatic pistol.
The gunman grabbed a female employee by the throat as he headed for the dressing rooms. Police believe he intended to take her hostage, but as authorities closed in, she was able to get away.
Customers were evacuated from the store, and employees were kept inside. No one else was injured in the incident.
"The suspect took his own life with a single gunshot to the head," O'Brien said.
The gunman was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital, where he later died.
O'Brien said a drug-sniffing dog found what investigators believe may be methamphetamine in the truck.
