We are back from our socal trip June 6-16. I've never done any sort of TR, but I thought I would address some of the questions I have seen frequently pop up here. I have found so much useful info and am so grateful to everyone. I thought maybe I could pass something along. OK, here goes:

First, a little background. Me, my DH, and two kids (ages 7 and 3) are making a bigger effort to visit socal. My inlaws live in Joshua Tree and are really starting to slow down. They can only visit once a year. We thought we could go see them more often and hit an attraction or two each trip. We wanted to start with DLR, but the whole thing has snowballed into APs and a second trip in December (now possibly Thanksgiving with the inlaws and then DLR!). I grew up in Orange and it was always a childhood dream of mine to get APs. Now I'm livin' the dream! I even mentioned that we could do a late May/early June trip before they expire and my DH actually thought that was a good idea!

Anyway, here goes:

Deluxe APs at Costco:
We arrived at SNA and drove to the Tustin Costco on sat 6/6. The process was quick and easy. The expiration date of these APs does indeed say 10/31/09. An employee provided me with the SKU number and I picked them up at the merchandise pick up window. He had to check to see if they were still in stock, I'm not sure he knew about the new batch. A quick trip to the very close by In-N-Out and we were on our way.

Hojos:
We had the entertainment rate and stayed at building 2, pool view. I think the building was nicely insulated from sound. The pools are indeed not heated and a little cool. The toddler pool at the Castaway Cove was by far the warmest (I am attributing this to how shallow it is and that it was heated by the sun and am choosing to ignore any other possible explanation). Loved the pillow top beds and the short walk. I think its a great value for the comfy beds, pool, and closeness.

Best random tourist moment:
My DH was getting some supplies from the Hojo's store, when a woman asked him where the continental breakfast was. He told him that Hojo's didn't have one. She got quite upset and stated that she was promised a breakfast. My DH thought that maybe she was part of a group that was providing a breakfast, but we were not a part of that group and did not know where a breakfast could be. She got very angry and stromed off. As we were walking down Main Street a few minutes later my DH said, "I really hope that lady found her breakfast."

School groups strategy:
There were several school groups during our visit. In fact, while I was remembering my own 6th grade school trip, we spotted a group of kids from my elementary school waiting in line. What memories! Anyway, they definitely gravitate to the coasters. Luckily almost everything they were drawn to en masse has FPs. I recommend hitting the Matterhorn early, it was pretty busy during the day and getting FPs for Space, Indy, Splash, BTMRR, and Buzz. Buzz was a little more hit and miss, sometimes the line was 5 minutes and sometimes 35. Space, Splash, and Indy all hung in the 60-75 minute range. BTMRR was around 30 with quick FP turnaround times. Luckily, many of these kids do not know how to use FP. We were about to enter Space in the FP line when I noticed that the CM was looking less than cheerful. I rounded the corner to discover that he was being yelled at by an angry mob of teenage girls for letting in the FP line before them. I felt sorry for the poor guy. The kids also pretty much leave Fantasyland alone, so it was very doable between 8 and 11am. There were fewer families the second week of June since summer was just starting to get going.

The newly refurbed Peter Pan:
It was so great to see such an awesome ride get some TLC. And yes, the new boat did fit our family of four. I was skeptical, but the CM told us all to get in and we fit (he had to repeat this several times to other families, and was pretty patient will all of us). My 3 year old had to be on the inside, though. The ride is smoother, the stars in the sky while flying over London had a more enhanced 3D quality, and the line did move faster thanks to the larger boats.

I think that's all for now. Coming up: the food, advice for WDW vets, and anything else people would like to now. I hope someone reads this!

I have a question, Lisa - since you started the fun thread about the 'Restaurants You Will Never Go Back To' to a while back, did you eat at any of the ones that got the worst reviews and have a great time there, or do you have any bad ones to add to the list yourself?:lmao:

We only ended up doing counter service, but there was nothing that I wouldn't go back to. We actually weren't terribly hungry while we were there (amazing for two foodies), we were so busy having fun riding rides. We ran out of time to go to DTD (the kids didn't want to be dragged away from the rides, not even for Leggos!). I had decided not to do the Blue Bayou mainly because my daughter had never been on POTC and I didn't know what she would think of the atmosphere. She absolutely loved the ride and both kids saw BB and wanted to eat there. So we will be making a PS for our return visit in December. I was thinking of the first lunch seating, getting there early, and requesting a waterside table. I'm willing to give it a try. It was always my dream to eat there as a kid, too. I definitely decided that I prefer the mickey ice cream bars over the ice cream sandwiches, so I most likely won't be getting an ice cream sandwich again, but only because I can't resist that ice cream bar! That obsession also led me to not trying the Dole Whip, next time I will! By the way, Sherry, I did check out your trip report and I love all your old pictures! What a stroll down memory lane!

Oh, thank you so much for looking at my Trip Report, Lisa (I never know who is out there silently looking at it, but I am in the process of getting motivated to start a new phase of it for the pre-TR for my one-day quickie trip next month). I am glad you enjoyed the old pictures.:goodvibes Now I have this new Canon point and shoot thing, and it will be an 'experiment' to see how I do with that camera next month! So many setting; so many details in the handbook; not enough patience for it!

You know, now that you mention the Mickey ice cream bars vs. the sandwiches, it got me thinking....I don't think I have had either of those in YEARS. Probably the '90s was the last time I ate them, so I cannot recall if I preferred one over the other. BUT, one of my friends who got a bar on one of our recent trips said that the bar was especially hard - and some DIS-ers seem to feel the same way. Did you find the ice cream bar to be too hard/too frozen? I assume that in the heat of summer, it would begin to melt pretty fast. I love a good ice cream sandwich - and they are dangerous for me, because I could probably scarf down a whole box of six of those Carnation ones that are sold at the store in record time! What was it about the Mickey ice cream sandwich you didn't like? Bad flavor?

I think that if I ever do the BB again, it would have to be a early seating for lunch. At night, the wait was just too long for us even with the PS. It is really not my kind of food anyway, though I love the atmosphere, and I would be more inclined to go back at 11:30 to get a waterside table and slightly cheaper prices!

I have had the ice cream bar at both WDW and DLR and they have been just right. Of course, at WDW it was September and scorching hot. Iteresting tidbit: September '08 at WDW ice cream bar was $2.50. June '09 at DLR: ice cream bar was $4.00!
I did remember one item I tried that had very mixed reviews: the lobster roll that was the F&W item at Award Weiners. One person absolutely hated it/got sick and one person liked it. I loved it. I thought it was refreshing, a good portion size and value, and tasted great. I'm glad I tried it. :thumbsup2

Hi... you mentioned that you got the "Entertainment Rate" at your hotel... how do you get that?... and if you don't mind sharing, what was the rate?... thanks

Wow this site is busy. Here is my second attempt. Using the card that comes with the entertainment book, you can get 50% off rooms at the Hojo in Anaheim. There is a standard $59 room, a deluxe $69 room (microwave plus pool view), and a $79 premium disney view room. There are several threads on the subject, including a recent one (updated today) that links to the discussion boards at www.hojoanaheim.com which lists the dates that these rates are available. New dates are constantly updated. Many here are veterans of the rate, this was my first time using it. There are several threads on the subject, which everyone sharing their experiences. Lorealle from Hojo also occasionally pops in to answer questions and is quite helpful. You have to present your card at check-in and can book up to 2 rooms with one card.

Im enjoying your report, keep it coming :) and pictures, got any? thanks so much :)

I have a question about the refurbished Peter Pan. :)
Did the lap bar seem to be lower? When we visited in January my 5 yr old got a bloody lip because the lap bar slammed into his face. The CM was less than helpful.:sad2: (But that's another story!) However she did say that it happened occasionally and the bars were scheduled to be lowered with the next refurb so they wouldn't be at face level of small kids anymore.
Just wondering if that happened or not? We were there May 30-June 2nd but PP was still down. :sad1:

Yes, the lap bar was lower. The CM lowered the bar for us after we were all seated. I forgot to mention that only 3 adults would fit comfortably in the ride (our group of 2 adults and 2 kids also fit). We were instructed to break into groups of 3 or 4, but until you got up there, it was hard to gauge how many would really fit.

Thanks! That is so good to know.:thumbsup2 I can't wait to ride in September!:cool1:

I laughed so hard when I was reading your random moment at the HoJos and your husband says "hope that lady found her breakfast". Those are the funny little things that happen on vacation that you never forget. I could hear my husband saying the exact same thing.
Thanks!

I think we laughed all the way down main street when he said it. I hope she at least went next door to Mimi's if there was no group breakfast to be found.

Here's a little more from our adventure:

Height restrictions:
I saw a few people post questions about height restrictions before my trip. My DD is a little over 41 inches tall without shoes and tried out some 40 inch rides for the first time. I had heard some say that their kids were denied going on rides at this height and was a little nervous. I am happy to report that she was well over the mark at BTMRR, Splash, ToT, Orange Stinger, and Soarin'. She chickened out at ToT, rode BTMRR and Splash, but opted not to go again, and enjoyed the Orange Stinger. Soarin' is one of her new favorite rides. The expression of pure delight on her face when the lights came on and we were in the clouds was priceless. She later told her grandparents, "I was in the movie!" The second time we rode (both times front row by request, thanks for the tip!), she put her hands over her face so that when she removed them, she would be in the clouds again. We checked her height at GRR (a 42 inch ride) and she has about a pinkie finger width left to go. All the CMs were friendly and encouraged her to stand up straight with her feet together. I made sure to take her straight to the measuring stick when we approached each ride so that we could be ushered right in. She was only checked inside once, at our second Soarin' ride. She did hit the measuring stick in slightly different places at each ride. I think the shortest was BTMRR.

Well, I will try to get some pictures loaded. I do have both a photobucket and shutterfly account and will try to figure this out. I read the instructions on the DIS. Hopefully it will work.

I can't wait to see the pictures! The easiest and fastest way to post them (in my opinion) is to use Photobucket. It is easier than other image hosting sites because the codes are simple to find. Near each photo on Photobucket - either underneath or to the right - you will see a series of codes. You want the IMG code, which is the 4th one down. All you have to do is copy (Ctrl C) the entire IMG code - don't leave out any part of it - and paste it (Ctrl V) right here in a post!! Voila! Picture appears!:goodvibes

Here goes a test photo. My kids proudly displaying their APs. They are so ready to get on some rides, though.

Okay, the picture is showing, but so are all the numbers and things around it. Did you copy the entire code? There should be 'IMG' in brackets at the beginning and end of the code, but we should not be able to see the code itself - we should only be able to see the photo itself and you see the code when you edit your post. I see URL and a bunch of numbers and things. You don't need to re-type anything, remember. Just Ctrl C the entire IMG code near the photo and paste it here - you don't even need to use the Insert Image icon. Just Ctrl V.

Here are some food pics.

Pacific Wharf Cafe
We actually ate here twice. The first time I had the Shrimp Louie Salad and my DH had the Sonoma Chicken Salad. The second time I had the Beer Cheese Soup from the F&W Festival and my DH had the Clam Chowder. Everything was delicious and I especially loved the bread bowls.

Hungry Bear Restaurant

No pics, but we both had chesseburgers. They were decent, about what you'd expect for theme park food.

Royal Street Veranda

We stopped here for clam chowder in bread bowls one cool and drizzly lunch. I used to go here after riding POTC long ago. We carried them over to the Hungry Bear because my son wanted a cheeseburger and my daughter wanted chicken nuggets. I had to direct several people back to NOS to find them.

French Market

I really enjoyed this place! Good food on real plates. I had the four cheese pasta and my DH had the jambalaya. The highlight of the meal for everyone was this Celebration Cake.

Award Weiners

As previously mentioned, we tried the lobster roll from the F&W Festival (and loved it!) and the kids enjoyed their hot dog meals. They loved the seating area next to Muppet Vision 3D.

This, of course, needs no introduction:

:)Ok, things are a little more spiced up with some food porn.

Off Site Dining
So when we travel, my DH and I like to stick to restaurants that can't be found back at home. We think it adds to the whole adventure. The only time that guideline was broken on this trip was when we picked up DH's parents from the airport after their flight was changed from Palm Springs to Ontario. They were out of town for a niece's graduation and we took them home to Joshua Tree. They were exhausted and just wanted some pizza.
For off site dining in the disney area, I recommed The Block in Orange. It's close (from the 5 south you can get off at Chapman Ave/The City Dr, turn right, and its about a mile down the road) and they have one of our favorite places, Cafe Tu Tu Tango. They serve tapas of all kinds, great for sharing. At lunch, they also serve hamburgers and sandwiches in addition to the tapas. I strongly recommend the sangria. The Block can also be a great break from the crowds at disney. We also went to El Torito for some quick mexican food and discovered that they have an all you can eat lunch buffet for $8.99. They have mexican cesar salad, enchiladas, tacos, fajitas, beans, rice, and corn cakes. Very good and a good value! I've never eaten at Rancho del Zocalo, but DH has and says that this is much better. There is also a seafood restaurant there that we haven't tried yet and a Corner Bakery and Cafe. It seems like from the boards that people don't stray too far from the disney area, but if go a little further down the road, its worth it! OK, my plug for Orange is over (can you tell I used to live there :)).
We also went to Newport Beach (after a trip to Crystal Cove State Park, one of my favorite beaches in the area) for one of our favorites, Rockin' Baja Lobster. It is right across the street from The Crab Cooker. I have heard several people endorse The Crab Cooker, and I enjoyed it too, but Rockin' Baja Lobster is unique. They serve buckets of seafood (and grilled chicken and carne asada for the land lubbers) with beans, rice, chili butter, and flour tortillas. I am addicted to their chili butter!! They also have some more conventional entrees like fish tacos. Wonderful place, mostly populated with locals.

Fireworks

We caught two previews of the new show, once outside the park by the bus area and once inside the park in Fantasyland between the Storybookland Canal Boats and teacups (one of my daughter's favorite rides). The first time was fireworks only, we couldn't hear the music. The second time we saw the fireworks pretty well from that area, but only caught glimpses of Tinkerbell and Dumbo. You also had to look left to see the fireworks over the castle and then right to see the ones higher in the sky. For us this was a good compromise since we are not the type to line up hours before a show (the kids would mutiny!). I can't believe how much these shows have changed since I was a kid and they just shot off a bunch of fireworks much higher in the sky. Growing up, a neighbors tree obstructed most of the view from our house. I felt like taking out that tree myself, but luckily there were lots of other good viewing spots in the area. Not anymore, it seems. I like taking pictures, but did not have as much of an opportunity to take them as I would have liked since we were busy chasing around two kids. I have been lurking on the picture of the day boards and have been so impressed with everyone's pictures, but I haven't popped in. I will say hi to you guys and tell you how much I love the pictures soon. Anyway, this is my first time attempting to photograph fireworks, and while this isn't the greatest shot in the world, I thought it was at least interesting.

DSC01080.jpg

Just after the fireworks, I decided to take my shot of the lanterns at Mad Tea Party.
